Dsd audio you have to here for your self. 5High End Sonics with Painless DSD PlaybackBefore I gush on the sound, I need to talk about some of the negatives and actually, there are a few. But first, I should mention that this review is from a consumer "music playback" perspective - not from a pro audio perspective. This is an important distinction because the associated AudioGate software that is required to be used with this DAC also includes some advanced pro audio editing features which seem out of place for a consumer product. These features may be relevant for audio pros, but they really have little use in the consumer world.With that out of the way....Korg DACs are part of a larger proprietary solution that also requires Korg's AudioGate media player software which runs on Windows and Mac. You cannot use this DAC without the Korg AudioGate media player software (this is a proprietary solution designed to deliver the best possible sound and to make DSD playback as simple as playing an MP3 file).The required Korg AudioGate software does support streaming audio from an PC source, something that is not intuitive from the associated docs. However, if you go the Korg's web site there is a great FAQ which covers how to use the DAC with audio web sites. So, you CAN use this DAC to stream Spotify or Tidal. Similarly, you can also stream TuneIn or other internet radio sites with this product.To listen to music files on your PC you must manually import them into Korg's AudioGate software using a dated File/Folder-Open command system. AudioGate cannot automatically detect your existing PC music library. Plus, there is no way to organize your music files in AudioGate once you have manually imported them (other than simple sorting). The net is, the music files/folders you import are displayed as one big list of files. (To further the misery, even playing a song takes a few extra clicks than is necessary.)(I previously mentioned the pro audio features. Oddly, there is no EQ functionality of any kind in AudioGate. This is a real drag from both a pro audio and consumer perspective. I find EQ very useful to fine tune headphone or recording shortcomings. It's difficult to understand why AudioGate doesn't have an EQ feature!)Worse-yet, there is no support for remotely-controlling playback using your smartphone or tablet. So...if you have a PC in your media room and you want to use this DAC, this is no remote control/play capability via a Korg Android or IOS app - the ONLY way to control music playback is from the PC - ouch!So, to summarize...with Korg DACs...you are literally chained to the Korg AudioGate software and the associated desktop PC or laptop. There is no other way to use this product. To play locally stored music files you must manually import them into the AudioGate software.So why the 5 stars? Well, the Korg "solution" actually delivers with superb audio performance while also solving a rather nasty issue that is common to almost all other USB DACs: simple playback of hi-res DSD files. The Korg solution lets you playback super hi-res DSD files in the exact same manner as generic MP3 or FLAC files. There are no special plug-ins or weird configurations to worry about. This is a fairly big deal because most other DACs and media players are not "plug-and-play" with DSD files.Sound-wise, there's plenty to love here and practically no negatives. There's tons of detail with zero harshness. Importantly, the internal headphone amp is well implemented - there's plenty of power to drive finicky, higher impedance cans. AudioGate lets you upsample all files to 2.8 or 5.6 MHz, or, you can play them back bit perfect. (You decide if there's an audible difference.)Physically, the contemporary curved form factor and solid metal construction of this DAC screams quality and unlike many competing DACs in the $200 price range, the current file bit rate is displayed along a clever row of LED indicators. This same row of indicators also briefly displays the relative volume output level of the internal headphone amp when the DAC volume buttons are pressed - nice!All in all, this is a fairly priced, super high-quality DAC with excellent sonics. At the end of the day, I can live with the klunky (to use) AudioGate software because this DAC really delivers on sound quality. But, that's because I cherish sound quality above all else. So...if you want a super high quality DAC at a fair price to use at your PC or with a laptop and you can live with the many limitations of AudioGate, then this is a great buy! 5Excellent Driver for new Sennheiser HD660 S HeadphonesI purchased this DAC concurrent to my new Sennheiser HD660 S headphones and wasn't disappointed in performance, as they work well together. DSD 128, DSD 64 and FLAC up to 24 bit/192 Khz. are provided for, as well as Korg 64 bit drivers for your Windows OS.Biggest disappointment is the Audiogate 4 software as it seems to be buggy and slow. The good news however, is Foobar2000 1.4.1 or greater easily integrates into the environment to supplant Audiogate 4 and provides features Audiogate 4 doesn't have, such as Replay Gain and gapless playback functionality. 5VERY GOOD ARTICLE AND VERY GOOD STOREVERY, VERY GOOD ARTICLE AND VERY GOOD STORE. HIGHLY RECOMENDED. 5Sounds fantasticI like the sound of my CD's better hearing them up-converted. It plays .flac and .dsf as well. 5The KORG DS-DAC-100 (and 100M) is great for playback of DSD files from PC or MacThe KORG DS-DAC-100 (and 100M) is great for playback of DSD files from PC or Mac. There is a HUGE difference using this DAC compared to using the on-board sound card for DSD playback. The reason is simply that the PCM-basesd sound card lacks the capability to output 1-bit DSD. It must first convert the DSD-stream to PCM to be able to play it, and the conversion nullifies the entire benefit of the 1 bit DSD-format. That's where this DAC comes in. The music player on the computer really just forwards the untouched bit stream straight from the source file to the DAC via USB. The DAC does the D/A magic, and sends wonderful music to your headphones.The device unlocks the full version of AudioGate4, a simple but very good player for DSD and PCM. If you don't like AudioGate4, it's easy to use the DAC with foobar2000 for DSD playback. You need to download three files; ASIOProxyInstall, foo_out_asio and foo_input_sacd. Once installed, select DSD as Output Mode under Tools/SACD. Next go to Playback/Output and select DSD:ASIO:foo_dsd_asio. Go down to ASIO and double-click on foo_dsd_asio to configure proxy settings. The SACD-plugin will output DSD64 as 176400 and DSD128 as 352800. These are the lines you want to configure:176400/DoP64=DSD64, SDM type B, NONE, DSD352800/DoP128=DSD128, SDM type B, NONE, DSDFoobar2000 uses considerably less CPU for DSD-playback compared to AudioGate4. No difference in sound quality.This device is a no-go for use with Android or iPhone/iPad for now. For mobile DSD playback, check out the ifi Nano with USB Audio Player Pro.If you want DSD capabilities on your PC/Mac get this DAC. 5Saving You From A $300 Disappointment!The biggest question that I'll answer, does this give better sound than what comes out directly of the laptop jack? The answer is unfortunately no. No detail can be seen beyond what your laptop or iPad jack delivers. The only improvement is sound volume, where generally higher volumes can be achieved. If you don't need sound amplification, then there is no benefit from this device.I think I'm an audio quality fanatic. The day I heard the sound quality of vinyl I got hooked and that sense that actually the instruments and performers are in the room is an overwhelming feeling that I always crave... To fulfill that crave, I opted for this DAC as a tool to improve audio quality of my digital collection after my excellent experience with the M-Audio Profire 610 which reveals a lot of detail and in many cases so much detail from a digital file that gives you that feeling of instruments in the room similar to vinyl. After reading reviews about this Korg, and the fact that it up samples everything to DSD I took the plunge and bought it. It should also be noted that it uses a flagship chip from Cirus which makes expectations very high.And then about a week ago I received it and within minutes I started using it... And what a disappointment! All my dreams of additional detail from digital songs were crushed. No matter what I did, up sampling or keeping the audio at native resolution, it didn't matter. Same laptop quality sound. It's miles away from what the M-Audio Pro-Fire 610 delivers. Practically I found no benefit in this Korg at all. 3Five StarsGreat product fast shipping will be back 5A couple of easy to fix things keep this from being greatIf you have a 4K monitor totally forget about using Audiogate. The way the software components work, you can't even use a manifest file. So easy for them to fix, but for some reason they don't. Audiogate 4 is just out and no fix. Also, if you need support, you can not call them. Sound quality is great. I'm using B & W P9 headphones and the sound is awesome, no external amp needed. You can use jRiver Media Center for playback, plays all DSD files natively, and works on 4K monitor. 4Great for use with digital audio workstations on the goI got this DAC because I needed three things: better quality than my laptop's on-board audio, really small size for portability, and stable ASIO drivers for use with digital audio workstations and software synthesizers (ASIO4All simply doesn't cut it beyond a certain point). This unit met all those needs and delivers great performance. 5
