Customer Reviews

Makes Kitchen Knives Razor sharp My first water sharpening stone for kitchen knives. One comment was on the 6000 grit side, one corner was broken off in handling or shipping before I received the stone. Not worth the hassle of sending it back.It does a good job in putting a razor edge on my chef knives. After a few tries and watching YouTube knife sharpening video, I got the hang of the . procedure. A guy named Ryky (Burrfection) Bob Kraemer's videos were the most helpful. The 6000 side is very soft and I gouged a section of one edge the first time I used it. Operator error but the material of the 6000 side is very soft. It is not a natural stone. My kitchen knives are now all very sharp and can cut paper like a razor blade. I do not use any kind of sharpening stone holder, I just place it on a dish towel on our granite counter top and add a bit of water. I wash it off every few minutes as I am sharpening.. 4Best stone I've used! I have more expensive stones that do not work as well. This is the true "one stone" that you can get by with. The 1000 is coarse enough to realign edges and the 6K is great for polishing up! I read where the guys that are really good say its IMPORTANT to get the "KDS" version of this stone. I like it so well I have given this stone as gifts! That's how good it is! I still do use my 600 grit stone so I can cut blades down that are way uneven. I but old knives that have good steal and refurbish them. So I use the 600 grit for fixing other peoples flaws they put in the blades by uneven sharpening. But once I get them trued up this KDS stone is the only one ever needed. It's money well spent! 5In addition it looks like they put KDS sticker over the KW-65 sticker I was sent KW-65 and not the KDS. This stone had a crack on bottom that extended all the way through side to side top to bottom. In addition it looks like they put KDS sticker over the KW-65 sticker. 2SCAM, Stone Not as Advertised In Picture I received the stone with a chip out of the corner. Also, they did not ship the stone in the picture. The photograph is of a genuine KING 1000/6000, whereas the stone I received was a cheap remake, with no text, or design stamp of any kind. THIS IS A SCAM 1absolutely good product! I strongly recommend it, do not buy other cheap stones even they have higher numbers marked. I bought a 3000/8000 stone (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01G2ZNBS4/ref=oh_aui_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) before on Amazon. It is cheap, only 20 bucks. But it does not do the work. Fig.3 shows the microscope image of the knife sharpened with 8000 side of that stone. You can see it is not good. While sharpening, you can feel the particles are not the same size. At first, I thought my skills are not good. Until I bought this King KDS, I found it was not my problem. The King KDS is good, although the number is only 1000/6000, it feels totally different! You can push cut paper, you can shave your leg hair very smoothly! The sharpened knife is mirror like. The first two figures show the knife under microscope after sharpened by KING KDS. I respect this brand! 5A great upgrade from diamond stones After using diamond stones for several years, I decided to upgrade to water stones. After much research, this combination stone seemed to be the best option as far as quality and price. I was not disappointed. The stone arrived wrapped well in bubble wrap, but the tight bundle was then placed loosely in a much larger box and allowed to tumble freely inside. A corner of the 6000 grit side was damaged, but the stone is otherwise intact.I didn't notice anyone mentioning this in other reviews, but my stones have a distinct odor. It's not something I expected, not sure if my stones are unusual in that respect. So, I mention it here as my observation.I had no difficulty in developing a slurry and sharpening many types of tools and knives. The fine surface finish left by the 1000 stone is unlike fixed abrasive products like sandpaper and diamond stones. The surface of the sharpened item has no distinct "scratch pattern" but rather a "cloudy" or "frosted" appearance. The 6000 grit surface yields the same style of finish, but just shy of mirror polish.Using green honing compound on a pine strop brings the finish to a bright, flawless mirror finish somewhat faster and easier than I can get from my diamond plates (which only go to 1200 grit).Very pleased with my purchase and enjoy my new sharpening stones. 5Check the corners carefully I was initially very pleased seeing how well the stone was packaged when it arrived. It was inside a thin plastic case and then wrapped in another payer of plastic sheet.I had reason some reviews that others received cracked or damaged stones and figures that I wouldn't have any issues since it was packaged so well...I was wrong.Upon closer inspection, I saw that a corner was crumbling off and the corner was missing. Not sure if this is worth the hassle of returning just simply because of the corner though. Kind of disappointed since this would be the most I spent on a sharpening stone.I know it's not the most expensive stone out there, but there are plenty of cheaper stones for sure. 3Great value - High quality Received my King KDS 1000/6000 by in great condition. Amazon seller was AKIBA Japan. It was wrapped tightly with thin bubble wrap, then put in cardboard. One corner of 6000 side has very small chip; but it s very small, almost unnoticeable. That s only reason I give 4 stars instead of 5.This is my very first experience with knife sharpening on a stone. Watched lots of YouTube videos to understand the process. While some make it technical and complicated with the science, performing the task is not difficult at all. I focused on finding a comfortable natural grip and stance, focused on maintaining the same angle through out the process. I soaked for 15 minutes in water, and started in on 1000 side. I took my time so I could really observe the feel of it while also being very conscious of my technique and posture. Took me 30 to 40 minutes I think, plus soak time. The result is that the W sthof Sankuto blade is sharper than it has ever gotten on my Chefs Choice 15/20 Angle Select electric grinder. Slicing tomatoes is very noticeably easier now.Not bad for my first time, yet I do feel the knife will be even sharper after I get lots of practice under my belt. I m glad I took the leap.So I gave 5 for ease of use, it works; but if you re like me, with no experience you ll need to research your technique before you begin. Probably can t just willy-nilly rub the knife on the stone and expect a magicly sharp knife.Value for money: I also gave this 5 stars, but not from my own experience. I ve found more than one review comparing this stone to others that cost more than twice as much, and this stone had better than 80% of the performance at less than 50% the price. I think that s why this King KDS is well regarded by many. I also like the larger surface area compared to the bargain stones I considered.I think the suggestion for a beginner to start with a 1000 was a good one. I was worried it wouldn t be course enough for step 1, but I got a burr after only 6 or 7 passes.I m very pleased with King KDS. This is not garbage. King KDS is the real deal. I think of it as entry level of the professional quality stones. Perhaps better even 4Love the super smooth material over less expensive ones that seem grittier For years I've been keeping my knives sharp (not dull is probably the better term) using a steel honing rod.I've purchased two stones, this King KDS and a cheaper option (you might recognize the same set of stones offered by multiple vendors at the $30 price range). The KDS stone is much smoother to the touch than the $30 stone despite having a slightly higher grit (3000/8000)Honestly, I had a lot of fun learning to sharpen my knives.I spent several hours watching videos and trying to get my technique down.I started with the KDS 1000, then KDS 6000, then my cheaper stone 8000.I can't say I got to razor sharp, but my knives were much easier, and much safer to use. 5Don't bother with "cheap" (aka budget) stones. Save your money and get this instead I'm coming from a sharp pebble stone 1k/6k grit combination stone. Stones within that price range are mostly rebrands from one particular source. Let me begin with surface area. You'll be pleased with the extra surface area the KDS provides as it really speeds up sharpening time especially if you have larger knives. I used my Dalstrong Shogun 6" utility knife to test out how fast I could develop a burr (AUS-10V, 62 rockwell). The 1K side developed a burr fairly quickly and provided really good feel as I was sharpening. It also felt really smooth and consistent throughout. The 6K side felt super smooth and compared to the 6K side on the sharp pebble, it was pathetic to say the least. The stone does not wear as quickly and the 1K provided a good amount of slur and wasn't overwhelming. HOWEVER,the 1K side is a super thirsty stone. I recommend soaking it for 20-40 minutes.DO NOT SOAK the 6K SIDE. If you want to, soak for about 2 minutes TOPS! I recommend to use the 6K side as a splash-and-go.Pair this stone with a proper whetstone holder and you won't be disappointed. Save your money for this stone and a whetstone holder. Don't waste your money on "budget" stones. After using this stone, I lost faith in "budget" stones. 5
