Customer Reviews

Lowest setting still too high for a short person! The product promises two things:- Accurate height adjustment using their Smart Fit system to achieve an ergonomic setup- You can adjust the height without toolsBoth of those are patently false.I am 5'2" and 115lbs, and their SmartFit system says I am a green. So, I installed the tray and it was so high up I couldn't even slide it out from under the desk. I adjusted it down, and it was still way too high for me. So, I moved it to the lowest setting and it is STILL 1.5" too high. Proper keyboard placement should have your arms bent at a 90 degree angle or sloping slightly downward, and I still have to hunch up to reach the keyboard. There's nothing unusual about my body or proportions, I am a regular ol' short girl.Although I personally found installation pretty easy (as long as you have someone to help, this is DEFINITELY not a solo job), it absolutely cannot be adjusted "without tools" like the video suggests. I had to use a power drill and a bit to drill pilot holes to install it (fair enough), but it also requires a screwdriver to adjust the height. And one final complaint - The track is not smooth at all! It feels very stiff and clunky when you slide it in and out. Maybe it will loosen up in time? Some pros:- Short track fits in a space about 13" big. You would not BELIEVE how hard a time I had finding that...everything is 18" or more.- The tray is a good size, easily fits my standard size keyboard and mouse with room to angle the keyboard when you are working on different monitors.I am giving it two stars instead of one because I believe I should be able to modify the height by buying some longer L-Brackets to replace the ones that came with it. It is a very simple set up which should make it easy to customize, and at $40 or so, a few extra bucks on new L-Brackets still makes it about half the price of similar models. But still...it really should work out of the box. :( 2The width measurement of 26" isn't quite accurate, but I have a "fix". I got this keyboard drawer from Amazon Warehouse Deals because I suddenly needed to work from home due to an exploded high pressure water pipe under my employer's office building, but my husband's desk at home that I now needed to use, didn't have a keyboard drawer.I really need a keyboard drawer because I use two 22" monitors with a laptop on my desk and a keyboard takes up too much space, plus, it isn't ergonomic (the keyboard it too high up).In regard to the 26" wide measurement shown for this keyboard:Although the Kensington keyboard tray is indeed 26" wide, you need a space of more like 30" wide because of the "L" brackets and the way the instructions have you install them "outward"...you need an additional 1.5" - 2" on each side for the brackets. However, the "L" brackets can be VERY easily flipped around facing inward if you're limited on space under your desk and the strength of the drawer set-up isn't compromised at all, especially because I simply added an extra wood screw in the vacant hole in each of the four "L" brackets (there are 3 holes but you're only given 2 screws for each bracket to attach to the underside of the desktop.)I've attached pictures showing how I installed mine. It's nice and sturdy (there are pictures with a natural keyboard and a standard keyboard.)And even though my hands fall between the "green & blue" install diagram (which would be the second line of screw holes on the "L" brackets), I installed my drawer on the 3rd row of holes to allow enough "headroom" for my Microsoft Natural Keyboard, which gives it extra clearance of about 1/2". If I didn't use the 3rd row of screw holes, the center of the natural keyboard hits the underside of the desktop....no bueno.I still have plenty of room between the bottom of the drawer and the top of my legs, and my arms are level when I type.If you're using a standard keyboard, the second row of holes should be fine if you need more clearance above your legs.Hope this helps :o) 5Has a few cons but does the job. Perfect size and pretty sturdy. I have a full size keyboard and it has plenty of room for a mouse. It came with plenty of instructions and measurement guides. Easy assembly and installation. There are a few things that I don't like. The brand name on the top front bezel is pretty tacky. The included wrist rest is a nice touch and adds comfort. However, it is just a standard rest and does not fit perfectly with the shape of the drawer. Also, only one screw and spacer is provided per bracket to attach the sliders to the brackets. I feel like another four screws and spacers should be provided for extra support.Even with the cons or is a decent product and does what it needs to do. 4Great inexpensive keyboard drawer and YES the holes do line up - because you only use one hole in each bracket. Great inexpensive keyboard drawer. One of the top comments is about the holes not lining up. YES the holes DO line up - because you only use one screw and spacer when mounting the bracket to the drawer slide. Apparently this user did not read the instructions because as you see in the photos - you only use one screw in each bracket. One hole will line up with one hole. This is a nice drawer for the price. The bracket are long enough to clear the each of my desk and there is plenty of room for my keyboard and mouse. The tray slides in and out easily and clears the 1.25" overhang on my desk. 5very little adjustability; installation tips Works as advertised, but doesn't have enough adjustment for my needs.Pros:Installs with shipped hardware for any desk 3/4" or thicker. I don't know what all the noise is about screw holes not lining up.Slides out easily, with a positive lock when pushed all the way in, under the deskFairly sturdy plastic. Middle flexes a minor amount when I rest my hands on the keyboard.Cons:Adjustability - Proper ergonomics recommends a negative tilt and a height just above the thighs. This tray sits flat and drops a maximum of three inches below the desk. It doesn't come anywhere near my thighs and is uncomfortable for these reasons. Once installed, there is not adjustability other than sliding it in and out from the desk. I may place wooden blocks under the brackets to get some extra drop below the desk if I don't end up returning this. I could potentially get a negative slope by using different mounting holes in the brackets, but I haven't tried it yet.SmartFit - This is a silly hand template. It recommends positioning the space below the desk based on the size of your hands. Larger hands equals a larger drop. This seems backwards to me. People with smaller hands tend to be shorter and would want the largest drop. I have a small to average sized male hand and even at the largest drop the keyboard is not usable for me without sliding it out from under the desk. Regardless, this seems to be more of a marketing gimmick than having any relation to ergonomics.installation: Mounting to the underside of the desk could be made easier if a paper template was included. I installed this myself and it's not easy to line everything up and install when laying on your back reaching up. I also found my spacial logic was impaired when in that position. I made careful measurements, marked the underside of the desk, and drilled a pilot hole for the first screw to get myself started. 3" in from the front edge of the desk is a good location for the screw for the front mounting brackets. Spacing between left and right bracket screw holes is 27 1/4"Black Mouse pad: Minor complaint here. Most mice are optical these days. Black doesn't reflect much light and reduces battery life on your mouse.Return shipping: not included if you don't like the product 4Semi-Easy to Install - Works Well Pretty easy to install, but read directions (look at pictures). First separate hardware. Turn drawer over (elongated holes go toward back for wires) and use the four shortest screws to mount the two sliding brackets - one on each side. Next, mount the four L-shaped brackets - put spacer between L-bracket and slide. These use machine screws - use one screw on each bracket. The brackets will flop around a little, but once you secure those brackets to underside of desk, they will be fine. Next, those same same four brackets use eight screws that secure mounting under the desk. You may be able to use two or four C-clamps to hold brackets to underside of desk while you screw it in. Pre-drill holes in desk for bracket mounting screws. Slides are stiff, but will work themselves in after opening/closing for a few days. 5Rating based on Installation Only Three stars for unnecessarily awkward installation procedure for those like me retrofitting this to a desk in place. It is not practical to turn the desk over so installation could be done looking down on the work surface; rather the holes must be marked holding the assembled tray in place while you lay on your back under your desk. The brackets are secured to the tray by single screws sunk in plastic bosses, so you cannot bear down enough to make the brackets truly tight and unmoveable to aid in marking the holes.I gave up on the instruction method and created a hole position template from a piece of kraft paper. Taped that to some straight lines marked perpendicular to the front edge of the desk on the bottom side, and drilled through the paper to make the pilot holes for the screws. For perhaps 1 to 2 cents at most per unit, the manufacturer could include such a template with the product and save everyone a lot of hassle. (UPDATE AFTER INSTALL) The unit does not accomodate "deeper" i.e., keyboards with built in palm rests AND the supplied palm rest -- not enough room. Also if you are used to typing on a keyboard that has a slight elevation from "top" to bottom, it may not allow you to use the "feet" on your keyboard that provide the elevation, at least there was not enough room for this on my Logitech board. Because the unit positively locks when retracted, so could work around this by using some washers under the front brackets, so the entire tray provides that slant. 3An excellent product but..... I would have given this a 5 star rating if I only judged the finished result but getting there was unnecessarily challenging. At first look the hardware seemed good but the directions are still a mystery. There are all these pictures of hands & no written explanation. I finally had to ignore most of the goofy paper and some sort of measuring gauge that goes between your legs. In the midst of all this nonsense were 3 wordless illustrations which showed what the assembly was intended to be.I happened to get the glider rails on the right way so I was lucky. If you put them on the other way I guess your shelf will glide deeply under your desk but not toward you, as you would expect. So you have the rails on now and you attach the 4 hanger brackets with only one screw each, even though the glides have two holes available for each of the 4 hanger brackets. This soon becomes a problem when attempting to screrw this assembly under your desk and the brackets keep pivoting on that stinking single screw instead of being stabilized with a second screw for each bracket. Now there are two ways to position the drawer one is to turn the desk over and enjoy the assistance of gravitational force to hold it against the bottom of the desk. The other is to leave the desk upright and you get to go upside down. If your desk is like mine it is full of gear and a back splash making it too hard to turn over so I did it the hard way. The instructions offer no help as to the fact that the shelf must be firmly pressed against the bottom of the desk otherwise the mounting brackets will just keep swinging out of alignment. Four more 2 cent screws would have prevented this problem. It took my wife & I about 1 hour to get only 4 wood screws in properly. She is a good woman and I'm sure will soon forgive me. I later realized I could have propped it up firmly with a milk crate and a bunch of books and magazines. Isn't hind site great? If you buy this you'll thank me for that lesson. Now it's great and my advice to you is to first ignore all but the 3 main drawings in the instructions and second find some way to wedge it in position before attempting to screw it down.I am a professional electrical contractor so I can tell you this is no project for a novice DIYer. But if the manufacturer improved the hardware with 4 more screws and some decent instructions this would be a 5 star item. 3Overall good product, ok hardware, flimsy mousepad This is a good product for the price. It's lightweight but feels stable and is very easy to install - just set the height of the shelf and secure it to the underside of your desk with 8 screws. A few things to note, though:1) I didn't measure my keyboard and mousepad beforehand, so the shelf wasn't as wide as I expected. If you have a full-size (104- or 108-key) keyboard, you most likely will not have room for a full-size mousepad on the tray, hence the mini-mousepad provided. If you're a gamer and need a standard or oversized mousepad or gaming mat and also have a full-sized keyboard, definitely buy a wider tray.2) The supplied mousepad is very flimsy and thin. Luckily, it's removable, and mousepads are cheap. The wrist rest is actually decent, but can also be removed or replaced.3) The 8 screws provided are ok, but if you want a more secure hold, I'd highly recommend using wood screws to attach the tray to your desk. Depending on what your desk is made of, you may want to drill lead holes beforehand. Also, while it's possible to install this alone, it helps to have a second person hold the tray in place while you're making marks for screw holes and screwing it in. 5Terrific inexpensive tray So I labor over most of my purchases, reading reviews and researching everything. I wasn't too sure about this keyboard tray but I decided to give it a try. I'm so glad I did. The tray is heavy plastic and yes, I do lean on it occasionally. It doesn't wiggle or move around. Yes it doesn't lock into position, but that doesn't bother me. The tray is a little stiff to push in so if you do happen to touch it with your belly, it really doesn't move much at all (at least my doesn't). My husband and I installed the tray together in less than 5 minutes. READ ALL THE REVIEWS on this product. If you do, you'll know which screws to use where. You'll also know that if you want the tray to push in flush with the edge of your desk, you'll need to install it further back. I installed this tray in my home office. It's a hallow core type from Ikea. This tray is perfect. Yes, it has an edge, but the edge keeps your tray and mouse from falling off. If you use the wrist pad that comes with the keyboard, you don't feel the edge on your wrist when you type. Reviewers have mentioned there's not much room for a mouse. I use an ergonmic mouse by Anker and I don't have any problems at all. I'm a web designer and I spend hours at the computer. At work I have an expensive ergonomic keyboard tray that I don't like nearly as much as this inexpensive tray in my home office. In my opinion, terrific tray for the money. 5
