Customer Reviews

Love this lock on my 15" MacBook Pro I have installed this lock on my 2013 15" MacBook Pro computer. The nub that attaches to the laptop is a tight fit, it feels very secure as it is actually screwed into place, as in a nut and bold design sandwiching the computer body between. The locking device attaches easily to the nub and is allowed to swivel about on the attached nub. The cable attaching to the lock is also allowed to swivel freely creating a fully non-binding connection to my laptop. The cable is very stout, I should think exceeding the expectance of the locking device its self. This cable is vinyl covered and springy, meaning it does not want to be coiled up. It does flex away from your laptop which I do like as it leaves my work area mostly unobstructed.I had read reports complaining about the nub protruding from the computer, and so I thought this must be a bad thing. But after looking at the construction of locks which firmly attach to the computer and having this one, I find the nub is not something to complain about. It is instead a nice feature. The nub is what allows for a quick release and attachment of the lock and allows for the lock to swivel. So far I have not found any issues with the lock scratching the computers body. Another complaint I read about which caused me to hesitate in my purchase. The lock does 'touch' the body of the computer but it is not firmly in contact. The lock is firmly attached to the nub, which in turn is firmly attached to the computers body. The is a slight gap between the lock and the computer itself. 5But in my opinion Kensington could have come up with a better design. First Ok, so the design works. But in my opinion Kensington could have come up with a better design. First, it takes a second set of hands to attach it. Or, do what I did and use low stick tape to temporarily attach the round plate and ring so they will stay in place while you attempt to attach the dome. It took some effort to get the dome and lock to click in place. And when you unlock it and remove the lock, the plate, ring and dome come crashing down on your desk. Seems like Kensington could have come up with another mechanism (maybe even suction) to hold the assembly in place when you remove the lock. If I could do it again, I'd just buy a long bike cable with a loop at each end. 3Must Buy for Students This is a must buy for any student. I use this when I go to the library and an empty classroom to study. You wrap it around something that cannot be removed, and it keeps your laptop safe. I bought the ultra rather than the standard because I felt as if the standard was just too thin, and this would be more difficult to cut. I'm not too sure if it is actually the case since I didn't test it out, but I feel more confident when using this.I took off one star because of two reasons: (1) the price and (2) carrying this around. (1) This is my first laptop lock I have used, so I cannot compare it to others, however I did not expect it to be this expensive. (2) Since I have the thicker one, it is more difficult to bend it and put it in smaller bags. It also has some weight to it which I didn't expect it to have. The weight is nothing too major, however the size and bulk of this laptop lock makes it difficult to take this with you when you don't have a backpack. In the end, I would recommend this for any student. 4Good item It's the first laptop lock I've purchased or used and the issues I've had with it are due to my laptop rather than the lock itself. There's no way I'm going to describe my issue clearly AND concisely so this product is basically 5 stars and no problems. I have a Sony Vaio VPCF1. The slot where the little metal "hook" goes is indented slightly (by less than 1/8") but it is in exactly the wrong spot and so interferes with the lock and prevents it from closing around the "hook". I was going to return it but I determined that, bear in mind the "hook" is locked into place with an allen wrench, if I loosen the allen screw by 3/4 of a turn there is enough slack to lock onto the "hook". Ideally you want no movement at all between the "hook" and laptop, but there is no probable way someone can jiggle the lock enough to loosen the allen screw enough to steal my computer the way it is. And that would necessitate the thief knowing the screw is ever so slightly loose in the first place. If this somehow helps 1 person then I haven't wasted my time. 4High quality, easy to use. Definitely recommend. Very high quality. The cable or lock mech could easily be cut, but the idea is to make the equipment "theft resistant" not "theft proof". My laptop is less easy to steal so hopefully a potential thief chooses just to move on to the next office. The permanently affixed security stud is very unobtrusive when not locked down. Slim and low-profile. The stud can be easily removed when not locked up (unscrewed with the provided allen wrench) so if you decide you don't need the lock anymore, it's a 30 second task to remove it. I'm really satisfied that I chose to spend the extra few dollars for this upgraded version. 5Maybe more trouble than it's worth The cable on this is really, really stiff. It's almost like a spring that flings open when you pull it out. In fact, it's so springy that the included strap won't hold it in a loop, so I'm constantly fighting the thing when I try to put it away. It also makes it harder to attach to things and can get in the way on the desk because it won't stay put where I want it.I also don't like that the the little nub is basically permanently attached to the laptop. I'd prefer to not have it sticking out from my laptop. Finally, the keys don't work great. I have to fiddle with it before the key will turn and unlock it.On the plus side it's probably the most secure laptop lock I've ever used. It seems to be really tough. I'm not sure that's much a plus though because these things are mostly a deterrent against snatch and grabs anyway. If someone wants to steel a locked laptop, they're probably going to have a decent bolt cutter anyway, and I doubt this one would fair much better than a less expensive lock. 3Great lock, but you may have to cut material from your laptop Got one of these as a gift for a friend of mine, but the top shell of the laptop had the slightest lip protruding over the edge of the case (less than 1mm). This tiny imperfection was enough to let the lock snap into place with a resounding *CLICK*, but all I had to do was twist the lock body and it would pop right off again.I had to resort to removing a section of that lip using a Dremel tool with a small abrasive tube sander bit on very slow speed so the lock body could clear the top shell. I'm still wary because there is literally no difference in sound or feel between a successful click into place that securely locks and an unsuccessful click into place that can be twisted right off again. What if she forgets to rigorously test it each time she uses it?Kensington should have shipped it with two or three different mounting nibs, each with the locking groove a slightly different distance from the body of the laptop. These pieces are mass-produced on CNC lathes from steel rod stock, annealed/hardened en masse in large metal cages, tumbled in huge vats filled with ceramic polishing "stones," and then chrome plated en masse, so the additional cost to produce them would be negligible. Also, there is plenty of room to mount two additional nibs on the key fob that holds the one nib that is shipped with the product. This would be a very easy way to handle what I'm seeing from other reviews is a common problem that renders this lock useless on many laptops. 4Not easy to handle The lock is very nice looking but Its not easy to lock and take it out. I had a tough time operating it and was wondering how to get it out of the computer. After several attempts I was able to get it out. I didn't want to buy something that was that hard to operate. Its a nice product but if the opening and closing were to be more easy, I will still go for it 4iMac is secured with this lock. I recently had to two prowlers scared off from an attempted entry into my home. I want to secure my valuables. One of them is the awesome iMac and the files it contains. This lock is made for today's iMac. They sell it for much more on Apple's website and in it's stores. The Lock fits perfectly and does not draw away from the aesthetics of the iMac's design. The Lock is sturdy and the cable is extra heavy duty. The installation was easy and took no time to accomplish. I also purchased the cable mount to secure the cable to the bottom side desk. I feel that this is enough deterrent to a smash and grab robbery that will keep my computer and files that are on it safe from the home prowler who gets in your home.http://www.amazon.com/Kensington-K64613WW-Mount-Cable-Anchor/dp/B0036RHAFM/ref=pd_sim_pc_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=0X50DNQ59NZRJ6VEVD21 5Peace of mind I bought this with a new G75VX, for those times when you need to run off for a minute, but do not want to leave your laptop just sitting in the open.Unfortunately, this has so far not worked with the G75VX. The lock must seat fully onto the nub to latch, but the design of the G75VX around the Kensington slot prevents the lock portion from fully engaging. I have emailed Kensington about the possibility of getting a nub that is slightly taller, and will update this review according to their response. For now, I cannot recommend this to Asus G75 owners, as the lock is not capable of engaging with the included nub and the contours around the lock port.Edit 5/15/13:I have been in contact with Kensington support regarding the failure to latch on the G75VX. The response was that they only have the one size of nub. The recommendation was to return to reseller since I am still within 14 days from the purchase.I really want to have the ability to lock my machine down if needed, so I will not be returning the item. I am going to check with machine and metal working shops in my area. I hope to find one that will be able and willing to make the lengthened version that I sought from Kensington. I estimate that the height only need be increased by a few millimeters. My only other apparent option is to file away some of the contouring in the vicinity of the lock port. Please note, this will not affect you unless the surface of your machine around the lock port has contouring that is a higher elevation than that of the port itself. I will include a photo shortly to illustrate. 4
