Customer Reviews

Good Stone, Awesome customer service by Amazon I know the title suggest I'm reviewing Amazon, and not the stone, but it is a good stone.I use a 300-grit stone, followed by a 1000-grit stone to get a nice sharp edge. This 6000-grit stone does a great job bringing my knives to a mirror finish. My only complaint is that it is attached to the wood base, and I couldn't separate them from each other. As for Amazon, my tracking number details suggested that the package had been delivered, but either by theft or non-delivery, I never received the package. Amazon asked me if I wanted a replacement - for free. They replaced the stone, sent it with overnight shipping, no questions asked, and no cost to me. The service rep was incredibly friendly and reminded me of one of the many reasons I order from this site. A+ service for an A+ product. Note that I do have Amazon Prime, but I'm pretty sure I didn't get preferential treatment for that. 5An Amazing Water Stone I have almost two dozen sharpening devices from diamond files and sharpening pucks to water stones. Nothing puts a great working edge on my knives like this stone.I use this 1200 stone to get a working edge on my knife -- an edge that would be sufficient for most purposes. Then I switch to a 6000 water stone to finish it off. Like most outdoorsman, I have to have my knife razor sharp.I know that some guys like to go from 800 to 1200 to 6000, on the stones, but I have never found a reason to go down to 800 when sharpening a knife. You can find videos on YouTube showing you how to use a water stone. I highly recommend watching those before you attempt it yourself.I like to pis* off my wife and sharpening my knives on the kitchen counter next to the sink, so I can soak my stones prior to, and in between use. The Steelex D1091 Sharpening Stone Holder does a darn good job of holding the stone in place even on a wet smooth surface, and is worth the money. 5A good medium grit water stone I've been using this stone since 2010, about 5 years now, and it has held up well. Due to its thickness, I expect it to last me another couple decades, if not longer(I use my stones about twice a month or so). First, it is worth mentioning that this stone is not unpleasant to use. What do I mean by this? Well, some stones feel like nails on a chalkboard when using them. Using this stone is a much more pleasant and smoother experience. For my system, this is typically the stone I begin with when re-sharpening knives that I've already sharpened in the past. With new knives, I tend to need a rougher grit to begin with, since most factory edges have very rough grind marks, and the edge geometry usually needs adjusting to my preference. If the knife you're working on, like many knives my friends ask me to sharpen, is so dull and worn it has big visible chips in the edge, then you will want to start with a rough grit stone, not a medium grit like this one. Also, since some other reviewers comments may lead to confusion, to clarify, this is not a "finishing" stone. It is a medium grit stone. You can use this as your final grit, and it will leave a toothier edge, but this stone will not establish a "mirror polish." For that, you need something along the lines of a 6000 or higher grit water stone(8000+ is even better). If you want a complete system, then I would look for a rough grit stone, something around 250~500-for grinding in a new edge geometry/grinding away big chips, a medium grit(1000~1200)-start here for knives that have a good established edge geometry and don't have big chips, and a finishing stone(6000+)-for a mirror polished hair popping edge. The only ding I can give it(hence the 4 star rating), is the price. There currently seem to be better value options available. When I purchased this stone 5 years ago, I payed less than $20 for it($19.73). At the time of this review(June, 2015), the price is $32.40. Currently, the #1200 King Deluxe stone(http://www.amazon.com/King-Deluxe-Medium-Grain-Sharpening/dp/B0016VE6D4/ref=cm_cr_pr_sims_t/182-8407115-4567522) is going for $21.97, and there are other options as well. Aside from that, as long as you understand the purpose of this stone as mentioned above, this will work well for you. 4For a perfectionist!!! If you want to put a very fine polish on your blade this is the stone for you. I used this an have made knives scary sharp!!! If you are a perfectionist and want to be certain that you have the best tools and sharpest knives on the block get this and show them how you roll. I suggest you have some experience/practice with a harder stone because this one is kind of soft and easy to knick up. Also, in the product image there is a very nice looking wooden base that I thought would come with this product. That was not the case. It is a plastic base. The stone is pretty expensive and I did expect more but once I used the stone I was so happy with the results that I still gave it 5 stars. I do suggest that the product image be updated. 5No More Dull Knives A worker is only as good as his tools, and a chef is only as good as his knives. So what's the point of owning that expensive chef's knife if you can't keep a razor sharp edge on it?This stone works very well if you already have a good edge on your knives. If your knives are made of garbage steel this isn't the stone for you. If the edge has nicks in it or is unevenly ground, fix it with a coarser oil or whetstone before using this stone. This waterstone can be absolutely ruined by a cheap knife or an ugly edge. That said, if you have a nice, professional quality knife that alsready has a good edge and you want to make sharper than a razor, this stone will do it.It took me about 5 minutes to build up the surface with slurry and start polishing my knives' edges. Once the surry was there, I was able to sharpen each knife in about 10 minutes. This stone is actually a pleasure to use. Make sure to keep it well watered. It will require soaking for several minutes prior to use, and then a sprinkling of water every 30 seconds or so, if not more often. The base is very sturdy, with little rubber feet to prevent sliding. And, as other users have mentioned, this stone simply puts the edge on your knives. To keep that razor edge between sharpenings, use a honing steel. And let's be real; make sure that is good quality too. I've seen some lousy steels out there.I'm very happy with this stone. I'd recommend it to anyone. 5It's just as described and got to me quite quickly. It's everything I was looking for to replace the one I purchased when I was in Japan and accidentally broke. The only thing I would have changed is the grit. The one I bought in Japan was slightly coarser and since I can't read Japanese I had to guess at the grit. It certainly keeps my kitchen knives razor sharp, and that was the plan. 4Great Product This is a great product. It works well. I did think I would get the wooden base that is shown in the photo but got the plastic one which was somewhat disappointing. I had planned to display the stone when not in use to brag about my shrpening skill but I won't now. As to the performance of the stone, after using oil stones since I was a kid with my first pocket knife and recently in my adult years, sharpening with a professional electric sharpener I find using the waterstones relaxing. I am also able to get knives RAZOR sharp!!! When I say razor, I mean it. I does take some practice and a steady hand. I have two knives that I have been using to practice before I move on to my EDC stuff. If you have very little experience I suggest designating some practice knives and going to work on them. Once you get it down, yours will be the sharpest on the block. 5LOVE IT! ***Knowing how to sharpen a knife is a skill that must be learned, I do not recommend purchasing this if you do not currently know how to use it OR do not intend to learn. You will only ruin your knives, or at best, require the assistance of a professional to repair them.***This is not the first of this stone I have purchased and I am sure it will not be the last. These are very consistent through each stone and from one stone to the next. It is easy to use and maintain. I will use this 6000 grit whet stone as the final step to sharpening many, but not all Japanese Knives. Avoid using this on a German made knife as the Steel they are made from is much more resistant to wear and will only wear your expensive stone more quickly.Pros:1) Perfect size for most knives2) Slow to wear/dish3) Even texture through out4) Comes with a stone holder, though it will fit in most stone holders5) Comes with a Nagura Stone6) Requires no dressing out of the boxCons:1) This stone is soft and very easy to gouge if you are not paying attention... or a fellow coworker tries his hand at sharpening.Bottom line, I would recommend this stone to anyone who knows how to use a Japanese whet stone, this will not disappoint you. If you do not, I suggest learning about them and how they differ from the harder German and/or oil stones BEFORE you purchase one. 5It even comes with a small Nagura stone. 6000 grit makes knives razor sharp, and it even comes with a small Nagura Stone!I have only had this stone for a day but it has taken my knives to a razor precision. I am a Chef and have been slowly adding Japanese steel to my collection through the years. This stone is meant for final sharpening with high carbon steel blades and should in no way be considered for German, French, American, or even some Japanese Molybdenum blades. I use it specifically for my high carbon Japanese knives.Creates a great slurry and wears very evenly. For the money, you really can't beat it, this stone combined with an 800, a 1200, and a nice steel works great for a very sharp knife! 5Seems like a great stone... But I'm not convinced yet. This stone is a little confusing to me. It seems to be more dense than my 1200 grit in that it does not flatten or create a slur very easily. I also noticed that my 1200 stone seems to take more metal off. For reshaping an edge I have been skipping my 800 and going from 220 to 1200 to 6000 to a two sided Strop (both sides) and I get shaving sharp with a mirror polish finish.Perhaps I should revisit this stone.Note: I am still very new to this tradeskill. I will update this review if my opinion changes. 3
