Customer Reviews

Standing up well to firewood splitting & stacking I use gloves for a number of things (yardwork) but mostly for chopping and stacking firewood. I heat my house with wood, so I do a LOT of wood chopping and stacking. It's really hard on gloves, so I get a good test on gloves.See my pictures I've uploaded. The palms/fingers have actually work really pretty well, firewood cutting and stacking seems to really tear up gloves quickly. These have held up well. Unfortunately, my pinky finger now fits out of the side of one of the gloves since the seam has split somehow. I figure I may try and re-stitch that part as they are otherwise holding up better than I would have expected. These seems to have a pretty good grip and tactile feel as well. One thing that leather gloves lack is feeling. I do like synthetic materials for that reason, but a lot of them don't wear well.I've tried many brands over the years, mostly used custom leathercraft (not bad), and midwest buffalo leather gloves (great), Mechanix (really terrible).I'll give these 4 stars, and I'd probably give these another try once I need a new pair of work gloves, hoping the stitching issue is not going to happen again. Overall, really pretty good gloves. 4If it does not fit, you must acquit. I could not help myself. Okay, first time using Ironclad gloves. This is for warehouse receiving, truck unloading, merchandise sorting, handling nasty sprintered wood pallets and all sorts of chinese made crap. In the past I've used Mechanix and Husky from Home Depot. Husky gloves are not designed to handle this type of work. Mechanix fit well, and seem to last a reasonable amount of time.Decided to try Ironclad because reviews state they outlast Mechanix. Wore these gloves for the first time last night. First impression... very stiff and possibly too tight. Could barely pick up a pencil and hold it properly to write on a manifest.Also- Some sort of sharp seam, inside near the base of the index finger where multiple pieces of material come together. Noticed it in both gloves and was not pleased.Decided to give these a chance, break them in and see how they felt.I'm happy to report after 4 hours of truck unload, they gloves had already started to "break in" and feel really comfortable. After 8 hours I could handle a pencil much better and the sharp seams and stiff leather were supple and not an issue.I should state, these gloves appear to be well made. Lot's of reinforced leather or synthetic leather at key contact points on the palms and fingers. Certain amount of knuckle protection (TPC) and breathable material on the backs of the fingers. These appear to be serious work gloves.I will update this review as the weeks go by , I'm hoping to get a few good months out of these. 5They don't last They don't last! I purchased these less than 3 months ago and have used them for very light duty just framing in and drywalling a basement. The fingers already have holes in them making them pretty much useless. (I covered the holes with duct tape in the pic so I could try and use them, but it didn't work) They are marketed as tough gloves, but they just don't last. I would not purchase them again and I would return them if I could. But of course I'm already past the return period. Also, I think I have average size hands and the extra large seemed very tight. 1Stacking wood - No problem! These are now my favorite gloves and I'll be buying more when they finally wear out... Which they haven't started to do yet! We stacked and bundled about ten cord of firewood last season, and I bought these about halfway through when my other "name brand" rugged gloves got holes worn through the fingers. Firewood wears out gloves fast! However, these lasted through the season and look like I haven't worn them yet!I use them every day putting wood into our own outdoor wood boiler as well.Only negative: They are not insulated, so in winter, my hands get cold fast.Postives: Durability through the roof! Also, I have small hands and it's really hard to get WORKING gloves that are both rugged and fit me well. You don't want long fingers when you're tying up bundles of firewood. These fit great and they have some features I love: The backs breathe, so you don't sweat, they have adjustable wrists to prevent them from slipping off, and they went so far as to reinforce the front of the wrist where you grab them to pull them on. There's a small plastic ridge there so you can easily grab the cuff to pull one on even when the other glove is already on. Great design! 5NOT WHAT THEY USED TO BE! I usually am very impressed with these gloves. I cut, split and sell firewood for a living. Each pair will usually last about a month, which is great for as much as I put them through. The last several pairs a bought lasted only a couple days. And the last pair I bought last an hour before the right pinky and left ring fingers tore on the seems. I contacted the manufacturer and they did nothing but send me an email stating that my email was received. That was about 2 weeks ago. I don't know if the head of QA changed or they starting using different materials but they are not what they used to be. I recommend finding different gloves. Wells Lamont makes a similar pair and they are cheaper and hold up better than these. Harbor Freight (yes that Harbor Freight!) also makes some that are now better than these. 1My New Favorite Gloves and That Means Something These Ironclad Heavys are my new favorite gloves. I'm very picky, so this says a lot.I used to like the Mechanix Impact gloves, but they changed the design long ago to one that was essentially designed to fail at the area near the base of the thumb. I loved those gloves, and was very disappointed at the short life. I continued to wear what I had for the years following until I was desperate for replacement.Fast Forward to a few months ago, my last pair of M gloves were just done in. I had to get some new ones. I ordered a couple of different gloves from CLC and this pair from Ironclad, and have been wearing them for various general use and work projects. The standouts of the bunch are these Heavy Utility Gloves from Ironclad. The CLC gloves are okay, but these Ironclads seem better thought out with fit and design placement of abrasion materials in the palm and fingers.I love the use of synthetics in the build, making them extremely durable and washable, compared to leather and suede. I think suede in wear/stress areas in work gloves is a huge mistake. Suede seems to wear poorly, and tears like paper. Also, with the Ironclads being synthetic, I just toss 'em into the washer with the work clothes, put 'em on wet, make a fist a few times, push on to fingers/webbing to shape/stretch/conform, take off by the fingertips, and hang to dry. These things are amazingly comfortable, though do take a little time to break in. They offer pretty good dexterity for a "heavy duty" work glove. They get more comfortable with every use. I look forward to my jobs for the opportunity to wear my gloves. They offer refinement of the process, same as the pleasure of working with quality tools.Working with rough cut lumber and other potentially hand damaging materials with confidence, no worries for splinters or pinches. Great help against fatigue. Ordering a couple pair as backups. Ironclad is my go-to from now on for work gloves. Long may the quality continue! 5Coming apart almost immediately We have bought more than 15 pair of Ironclad gloves from Amazon in the past few years. Everyone in the family uses them and we have given them as Christmas gifts more than once. This is the first time we've had a pair that didn't hold up. We bought these 6 weeks ago, so they can no longer be returned to Amazon. In that 6 weeks though, they've only been used lightly for about 1 week. The coating on the fingers is cracking and seams are coming loose. This is not the quality we've come to expect from Ironclad. 1They are very slippery. These are not the best gloves . They get very slippery. The leather on the fingers are not ideal for holding tools. This glove is however a heavy duty glove but not ideal for use around oil or where you would get something spilled on your hands. The leather causes things to slip right out of your hands. I bought two pairs of these hoping they would be better than their other ones but I was wrong. Buy the other one that doesn t have all that leather on the fingertips. 1Sturdy, Solid Gloves UPDATE: I should have updated this sooner. I love these gloves. Yes...when i first got them, they ripped off a couple of fingernail tips, but once they break in, they are pretty indestructible, as far as construction gloves go. I have purchased 2 pairs so far.ORIGINAL:The gloves feel durable and strong, but the seams on the middle finger tip are in a bad location. Just doing jobsite cleanup, it ripped off the tips of both middle finger fingernails. Very uncomfortable, obviously. The seam repeatedly gets right between your finger and nail and folds the nail back, rather painfully. 5Very tough, but uncomfortable. I have small hands and was looking for a really tough pair of work gloves that was available in a size small. I settled on the Ironclad HUG-02 here and purchased a pair from Amazon. There's no denying the glove is tough, constructed of both man-made materials and traditional leather. The palm is particularly thick. To me, it seems very tough indeed and can be used for many tasks that would try other gloves sorely. There are negatives, though. The gloves do not breathe well at all and your hands will be sweaty and hot as long as you wear them. For some reason, the inner palm material is very scratchy and abrades the hand. It's very uncomfortable. To be frank, I expected more from a pair of gloves that cost $15, especially comfort. Taking everything together, I award this pair of gloves only three stars and would not recommend it. 3
