Customer Reviews

Works as advertised Used this with Macrium Reflect drive clone software. The first try failed in the middle, possibly because had not left the computer completely alone. The second try worked, I did leave the computer completely alone.Cloning about 250GB of data from a 1TB magnetic drive to a 960GB SanDisk Extreme Pro SSD took longer than I expected. I don't remember the exact duration, but I think it was more than half an hour. And now that I've done the clone and install, what do I do with the IO Crest USB 3.0 to SATA 6G dapter? Good think it doesn't cost much. 4Works for my needs. I bought this because I took my *old* SSD out of my computer and upgraded in size for it and i had just an SSD on hand. When i got this adapter I put in my SSD in and just worked. With USB 3.0 it is very fast but it will not be the same speed as my SSD because of the limit of the speed on USB 3.0 but that can't be helped. The adapter pulls power off of the USB port so you do not need to plug in the power plug for a SSD. If you have a HDD then you will NEED to plug in the included power adapter in the back on the device for it to work and that will power the hard drive and works as you would have it in your computer just as a USB drive on your computer. 5This is what I'm talking a bout Great upgrade on my old Sony Vaio 2010 old laptop ... This is what I'm talking a bout Great upgrade on my old Sony Vaio 2010 old laptop I even restore my laptop to factory settings and it takes approximately 2:40 seconds before is ready. and around 28 seconds to shut her down. But now with the new installed Samsung 850 pro ssd It boots around 38 secs and its ready and shutdown would be 8 secs and downloading files is fast to installing online games No doubt its worth it. and installation is very easy its just I hope there is a kit options Included just like the 840 evo you have a option if just the ssd or the kit. because i needed to ordered a sata to usb Syba USB 3.0 to SATA Device Adapter Cable with AC Adapter (SY-ADA20079) which this one run perfectly no problem at all. 5The C side is looser than I would like when connected to the computer and the A side ... This is for the USB type-C to type-A adapter. The C side is looser than I would like when connected to the computer and the A side is way, way, too tight. It took so much pressure to push something in on the A side, that when I tried to pull it out, it pulled the adapter assembly itself out of it's plastic case. I was able to press the adapter back into the case and unplug my device. The adapter worked after I put it back together, so I still give it 2 stars. 2Good with Western Digital SATA III, bad with Samsung 840 EVO SSD SATA 6 (backward compatible with SATA III) TL:DR: Works well most of the time, but has failed with one specific device (so far).POSITIVE EXPERIENCE #1: I purchased and used this with Amazon's Western Digital 4 TB WD Red SATA III 5400 RPM 64 MB Cache Bulk/OEM NAS Hard Drive WD40EFRX, and it worked very well.POSITIVE EXPERIENCE #2: I attempted to read a Dell Touch Seagate Barracude 1000GB drive with a competitor's USB to SATA (USB-DSC5), and although it could see the disc, it wouldn't allow access to contents and would not establish an accessible drive letter unless the drive was formatted, which would destroy the contents. I attached that same hard drive to this adapter & it provided full access to the Barracuda 1000GB contents without issue.ADVERSE EXPERIENCE #1: Later, I purchased Amazon's Samsung Electronics 840 EVO Series 2.5-Inch 512 SATA_6_0_gb Solid State Drive MZ-7PD512BW. Through this adapter, the Samsung Magician software cannot recognize the Samsung 840 EVO as a Samsung product.Karl Voss left a great review indicating that the first SATA to USB adapter he used with the Samsung 840 EVO had the same problem, but that a different SATA to USB adapter worked fine. It seems that some adapters do not faithfully pass through the exact drive identification information, while others do. One can argue this is Samsung's problem, but other SATA to USB adapters do faithfully pass through the drive identification information.SUMMARY: I guess you need a couple of these, because one or the other can fail on any given drive, but with two different USB to SATA adapters, at least one has always worked for me. 4Not the best quality control This adapter is great for transferring data to SATA drives, whether internal laptop 2.5 inch drives, SSDs, or 3.5 inch external drives (with the power adapter). HOWEVER, the unit I received has a short in the frame that mounts the SATA interface, so if the drive moves during a data transfer, the connection cuts out. It's not a big deal, but this isn't something you want to throw in a bag to use at your job. It's good for home in an area where it can remain still.I have used it to clone an Apple Macbook Pro drive, two Windows 7 drives, and a Windows 8 drive. The cable is short, I assume to prevent power loss if the adapter isn't plugged in, and that's another problem. But as long as you can put up with all that, it's not a bad product. If you need something more robust, I would suggest getting a dedicated dock from Thermaltake. 3Dangerous! Started to catch on fire. Cheaply made Shorted out and melted the casing rendering it useless. I got a warning while using it on my new iMac that it was drawing too much power and would shut down USB devices. Didn't think much until I pulled the adapter and noticed the entire corner of it was deformed as it had shorted out and heated the plastic to melting point. Luckily the computer shut down USB power or it may have continued to burn and eventually catch on fire. Will not buy again, it is cheap chinese made junk and I won't trust it with my SSDs or computers. 1Not quite up to snuff In my experience, this is an absolutely poorly manufactured product. Mine arrived with the SATA connector pointing up by about 5 degrees! While it did function as advertised, it felt like it could break easily. I expected a little more, thus the generous 3 stars. Treat it gently.Note, I ended up purchasing this model to compare against another USB3-Sata6G product and its performance. At the end of the day, these USB3 chips can't go faster than about 280MiB/s - SATA 3G speeds. This is why I am thrilled they advertise 6G! And that was the primary reason I purchased it. I eventually found some review sites discussing the limitations of today's USB3-SATA bridges. Outstanding... 3So far so good FAST This adapter comes with an AC/DC adapter that will supply the 12V to drives that need it. If you have a drive that doesn't need 12V then it works on the USB bus power and you don't have to use the adapter. I can't speak to the reliability because I have only had it an hour. I can say it's very very fast. I tested it with a 50% full Constellation.2 7200 enterprise class drive which is 2.5 inch that requires the 12V SATA pin. I plan to buy more of these.Edit:update, it's now April 22 and it's still working great.Today I am buying another one. It will be a floater in my bag and used as needed since the first one is now mounted permanently in a custom case I built for my constellation drive.Manufacturer's how about a 2.5" extra thick drive case that actually works as a heat sink, and perhaps even has a small quiet fan facing the drive and forcing air over it and out vents on the other side? How about supplying the 5V and 12V pins? How about a super fast USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt connection? My drive was $200. I would have paid $300 for my drive encased this way. Stay away from the flimsy mini USB 3.0 jack and plug. Best to use the full size or just go with THunderbolt. External power is OK. SO many companys making crappy drive cases. 5Did the job, but short cable This device did exactly what I purchased it for, which was to allow me to access an internal blu-ray device with a USB connection. I was subsequently able to burn a 50G DL blu-ray disk without any problems.I had it connected to a USB 2.0 port, so I can't make any statements about the speed of the device when connected via the proper USB 3.0 connection that it is capable of. However, as expected, data speeds at USB 2.0 seemed a little slow. When connecting to an optical drive like a blu-ray device, you need to use the included power supply, which worked fine for me. However, when connecting to lower power devices such as a laptop hard drive, this device is able to draw power from the USB port and functions perfectly well without the power adapter. The form factor was good and easy to work with, even allowing me to connect it to a drive that was in another computer's case. The only problem was the very short cable. You won't have much in the way of reach from your computer's USB port, but it may be worth sacrificing some cable length for the increased portability of this device. I do think that I would rather have at least a two-foot cable rather than the one foot cable that is part of the device. 4
