Customer Reviews

Great tool, but hard to use in some situations. Nothing can do everything. This gives you good precision etc but CAN be difficult to use. Working without the T-bar/crossbar, when you have decided on a point on a line from which to draw an angle, it can be quite difficult to FIND that point by looking for it through the face of the protractor. The window is so small you can't tell what you are seeing. Obviously, if you don't care where the line or the point are, you can do it simply. Just put the device on the paper and mark the center, mark the horizontal and mark the angle. This is a fairly rare case for me. OR, i may have already laid out some lines, and I want to draw angles from them. Again, how to find the line? This is like using a high power telescope - you've got a tiny field of view and an entire sky to pick out what you want to see with such precision - so they give you a lower power one to get in the right ball park. Here, I don't see any way to do that. Perhaps a plastic insert rather than the opaque stainless steel in the center/horizontal lines area? or a few more openings? I've tried sticking a pin through it, but it has to be a small pin.Second, if you do detach the fence/aligner (red thing) the screws, washer, and nuts are really easy to lose or misplace. It would help a little if the screws and washer were one piece. I have tried inserting a high power magnet in the slot and the protractor itself does stick to it, sort of. Maybe if, by default, it were attached by a magnet, it would all be easier.Anyone have any suggestions? 4Well made tool I did a project a while back in which I was cutting some compound angles. I made do with the clear plastic protractor I had in the shop and it turned out fine but I was thinking there has to be something better than this. I have one good potractor type device but it's not made for what I was doing so I started looking for something better. I'm somewhat embarrased to say I was completely unfamiliar with Infra though I've been a "shop guy" for most of my 65 years. Anyway this tool popped up on Amazon. I liked what I say and read and ordered it (along with an Incra rule set). While I have not done a project in which I've had to use this protractor since I got it, I did go back and duplicate what I did on the previous project on paper and scrap wood and it is a fine tool. I was marking angles along the side of a board and the bar for want of a better word along the bottom puts the protractor right where it needs to be to measure the angles and it's really easy to line up the index marks on the protractor with the point I marked on the board. All the angles and fractions are clearly marked and the slots cut in the protractor make it easy to mark just where I want to with the included 0.5 mm mechanical pencil. Like the other Incra tools, it's made from thin stainless steel to make for more accurate marking with no parallex error. As a result you don't want to just throw this in you tool box with the hammers and pipe wrenches. It's a precision tool. I actually made a little wooden box with the protractor and other Incra tools fitted in it. The tool is US made and that's important to me. 5Precise and beautiful manufacturing Extraordinary precision and repeatability. Hay, that's what measuring is about. Beautiful manufacturing and materials. The blade is thin, so I worry about putting a permanent bend in it, but thin helps with marking and visualizing other marks. I got the rest of the set (small and large T, corner marker, 18" ruler, and center finder) I am completely pleased. 5Amazingly Accurate and Useful Amazing little protractor. I also use it as an impromptu center-finder.This protractor comes with the official 0.5 mm mechanical pencil. It's a little bit of a tight fit, but no slop, certainly, so it creates a perfect line. I'll have to find a scribe or super-fine tipped permanent marker for plastics and metals that don't take pencil well. Overall a highly accurate and well-built measuring and marking instrument. If you want to mark it correctly the first time, use an Incra. Everyone should have one of their toolbox along with an Incra 6 Inch T-Rule.... 5Incra Protractor 6" (15 cm) Precision Marking Protractor Hi. I really love this product because I can create different drawing/precision marking for just about anything my mind can get into. I was surprised to see that it was made in USA, so I was extremely proud of that! Everything's a bonus! And, the T-bar can be taken off if need be, but can be stored for future use. I HIGHLY recommend this product for anyone who needs precise measurements (in 1/2 increments; also, a 0.5-mm pencil is recommended. Anything larger than that will not work!). GREAT PRODUCT! SPEEDY AND PROMPT DELIVERY! A++++++++++!!! :D 5All Incra products improve accuracy. Great product for laying out anything. I think the stainless steel is a bit thin but, that might be neccessary for accuracy. 5I really like this product and would rate it at a 4 I really like this product and would rate it at a 4.5 stars.I got super excited seeing a product like this with precision markings and well thought out design. It has some drawbacks but overall I think it is worth it.First is the pros-Markings are very easy to read with number markings every 4/32"-Big pro for me is the marking holes every 1/32", and markings down to 0.5 degrees with thoughtful markings such as 22.5 degrees and 67.5 degrees. Incredibly useful. Center alignment is also made easy with the crosshair-like cutout in the center of the protractor.-Can use it as a compass to make circles-Comes with a TBar for help with alignment on piecesCons-Very thin-Corners are sharpNotes-You need to use 0.5mm or smaller pencil/pen in order to fit the holes, not a problem for me as I prefer to use 0.5mm.Overall I like it, I have been able to make incredibly accurate angle markings with this and it feels incredibly satisfying to be this accurate. My only slight complaint is how thin it is. This isn't as big of a deal as it was with the 12 inch ruler, which I found to be flimsy, but is of concern. In the end though, I highly recommend this product if you need fairly high precision angles. 4My first Incra purchase. I gave this five stars because the quality was apparent at first look, the thing is amazing. I do small projects in my garage using a table saw, radial arm saw and various sanders to make small boxes with multiple sides. The lids are made of wedges glued together on a backer of the same wood. In order for sixteen little pieces to fit tightly (eight sided lid) the angles must be exact. This tool enables me to achieve the accuracy I need. For those who might wonder, it does come with a pencil that appears to be .05 mm. Using this instrument I can mark any angle down to .5 degree, using a magnifier I can mark as close as .25 degrees (doubt I can cut that close). Warning: this protractor is a delicate instrument and needs to be treated as such. Don't be surprised if you notice smudges when you first begin handling the instrument, this is simply oil from your fingers being transferred to the aluminum. This bothered me a little so I rubbed it down with a bit of cooking oil and wiped it clean. I look forward to many years of using this wonderful tool.In that the protractor is only 6" wide it will only extend marks 3" out from center, with care one could probably extend these marks another three or four inches without too much loss in accuracy. I would like to see Incra offer a 12" and possibly a 18" model using slightly thicker aluminum and the same precision. I do recommend this fine tool. 5Excellence: highly recommended In addition to this protractor I now own quite a collection of Incra rules in different sizes and configurations (straight, T, bend, protractors). All of them are based on the 0.5mm pencil marking holes and slots. I can t imagine going back to standard rules and gauges and expecting a level of precision and accuracy that you can get with the Incra rules. Whoever thought this idea up, and then went to the trouble to commercialize the idea, is quite simply a genius. I should probably say a genius that spent a lot of time and frustration and rework measuring and marking with conventional rules. When you consider the benefit Incra rules provide you ll quickly realize the price is a bargain. 5Love it I love this protractor. It allows you to be extremely accurate for small angles. I have found it to be priceless. No I take that back it's worth every penny it cost plus ten times more. I have recently been getting into the art of segmented bowl turning on my Lathe. This protractor is amazing for helping me to mark the exact angle needed for each piece to match perfectly. The only other way to get as accurate of angle is to maybe use a two or three foot protractor and then you might be as close as this 6 inch tool is. I can now make accurate setup jigs in just minutes and at pretty much any angle I might ever need. 5
