Customer Reviews

Atypical and originalHouse Arrest touches on questions of ethics, relationships, and especially family in a way I've rarely encountered in novels. The characterizations are particularly strong, the plot compelling, and Meeropol writes with enormous sympathy and heart. 5A marvelous, very intense novelOn the surface, House Arrest tells a simple story. A visiting nurse is assigned to provide prenatal care for a woman who's accused of a crime and facing pretrial incarceration, but because she's pregnant, instead of jail, she's allowed house arrest. But under the surface, the characters inhabit a world swirling with secrets and complications. The narrator's father was imprisoned for burning a draft board during the Vietnam War. The women under arrest fled home because of a very different crime. Stir in a religious "cult," a vindictive boss, and a child with spina bifida, and this novel is as intense as a three-alarm fire. The characters are beautifully three-dimensional. The action reminded me of Ordinary People, mundane yet a mile deep. And it stays with you long after you've turned the final page. A marvelous novel, and very "arresting" debut! 5The greatest compassionI just finished House Arrest and must say that I really loved it. The complexity of the characters and their interaction with each other, as well as Meeropol's compassionate approach to lives that are not always above reproach moved me more than I can say. The author whose mastery belies the fact that this is her first novel pulls off the rare feat of making the reader identify in turn with various characters. Thus I constantly found myself questioning and then understanding motivations and actions. Bravo for a profoundly original and well-told story. 5a good story well toldThis first novel is a good story well told. While Meeropol's prose are straightforward, she allows the ambiguity of moral dilemmas to unfold subtley and naturally. This creates a depth that enriches the experience of reading. I look forward to what this author does next! 5Could not get it in EnglishThis book would not do text to voice on my Kindle. Someone tried to fix it but it did not work. Very irritating. 1families and choicesThis small book is a fast and compelling read. Very quickly the characters are under your skin. People from supposedly different walks of life have more in common than you or they'd suspect due to trauma and choices. It is the story of loneliness and need, of abandonment and finding family and self. The background is the politically charged days of the near past and the effect those days and the actions of the young parents had on their children and their families.Choices are made all along by many characters that have rippling affects on all of the families...The small novel explores different styles of families and of connecting and the way we find succor and safety and danger within those families. There were many moments when you were afraid for the characters and the pages almost turned themselves. An affecting good read 5Beautiful bookI read this one after Ellen s 3rd book Kinship of Clover and it answered so many questions. The characters are so interesting and fleshed out and the questions it raises are incredibly thought provoking. I can t wait for her next book to get to know some of these characters even more. 5What is all the hype about? Our book club recently picked this book based on a recommendation from a book club list. We then went on Amazon.com to purchase it and saw the 5 star rating and all of the great reviews. After reading it, I can't understand what all of the hype is for. The writing was average and the characters were not fully developed. I found myself thankful for the short chapters and the overall length of the book (only 216 pages to get through...) I thought there would be some in depth revelations about religious persecution, but even that was just skimmed over.Don't waste your time or your money on this book. 2Page-turning depth and compassionHOUSE ARREST engaged me with complicated well drawn characters and page-turning plot, and impressed and hooked me with the compassion and depth of understanding the author showed towards extremely complicated circumstances. She amazed me with her ability to present a 'cult' with fairness, shaded in ways that avoid all the usual stereotypes.I avoid reviews which give away plot points, so suffice it to say that this book will hold you, make you think, and take away any ability you have to think of people as flat types. Meeropol takes the reader way behind the headlines.Highly recommend. 5compellingHouse Arrest kept me reading late into the night as I was compelled to see how the story resolved. This book examines complex issues of loss, responsibility to those we love, and forgiveness with complex characters that have lived on in my mind long after I finished. It's that perfect combination in fiction -- a book that makes us think, characters who come alive and a story that keeps the pages turning. 5
