    Very good "cheap" digital light meter I got this for checking lighting levels (not photography, but say office, hallway, etc.). It's a great little unit, although a little on the cheap side -- cheap, thin, plastic and so-so fit together parts which probably won't last long but long enough for occasional use. The display is exceptionally big and easy-to-read, and there is an optional back light. Unlike similar, inexpensive products, it does come with a 9V battery so that, when you get it, you can use it right away. It displays a reading about every 1/2 second and is repeatable enough. There are buttons for range and for lux or footcandles, but they don't remember, so you have to do a little series of buttons on each time you turn it on. It defaults to the highest sensitivity which is usually an over-range condition on startup. Overall, I like it, as I didn't want to have a two-handed device with a dangling light meter that requires two hands all the time. Not having to hassle with finding a battery was another plus. The light meter attaches with one of those USB retractable wheels inside the top of the housing and is about 2 feet long. 4Works great Came without directions. My students figured it out. Works great 5terrible, not good at all this light meter is not accurate, it was giving me different results and it seemed erratic. I changed the battery, same thing. I put the cover on the sensor and the reading was higher than when I took the cover out. this thing is a joke 1Great little unit. This thing is great for the price. Nice build quality, and it works well, it's easy to read and easy to use. There's no way for me to reference the absolute value of the Lumen or Footcandle readings, but the relative readings seem correct. I did a little experiment - I measured 7 GE incandescent bulbs, a 15w, 25w, 40w, 60w, 75w, 100w, and 200w...and the Lumen readings for each bulb were linearly proportional, just like you'd expect. 5Not a big deal as I just folded the cord back into the unit and it works fine. Otherwise considering the small investment I woul I purchased this product to use on a single lighting job. I have only used the unit a few times but seems to work well. The only thing I have had a little trouble with is the removable sensor wire recoil, after taking the sensor off for the first time the recoil failed. Otherwise considering the small investment I would give 5 stars. 4Basic lightmeter for light duty It works, but it is not auto ranging and it is not very sturdy. The light sensor head keeps falling out of its cradle which makes it hard to use as a single unit. But the extension cord for the light sensor seems like a good idea but I can see that the little retracter, often used on cheap retractable USB cables, will probably fail after a few uses. 3can make good use of a such a meter to insure safe ... I work in the lighting industry and have access to professional tools during the workday. Our eyes change as we age, and technically oriented consumers, can make good use of a such a meter to insure safe and appropriate light levels in their homes. This is a perfectly satisfactory tool for evaluating lighting conditions around the home and neighborhood. Good set of features and reasonable accuracy for an aggressive price. 4Good Meter I bought this meter to check light in various parts of my garden, at different times of day, and during changing weather conditions. If it keeps working the way it currently is, I'll be very happy. The detachable sensor is handy. 5Initial Frustration with the Product but it's a Good Meter. My need for a light meter was to measure foot candles. Initially, I bought another meter that I didn't like and seem cheap, so I returned it and got this one on the basis of another product review.My initial frustration was with the fact that the battery door has a small, electronics sized phillips head screw in it, which you have to remove to put the battery in. Since I didn't have a screwdriver this small, I had to go buy one. This is somewhat of a design flaw, in my opinion. Either make it a standard sized screw, include a small screwdriver that will fit or at least note in the product description that an electronics sized screwdriver will be needed.Once I got the battery door off, there was a new battery inside, in plastic. It was in there tight and I had to fight a little bit to get it out but I finally did and plugged the battery in.Now for the good: Once the unit was working, I was very happy.The readings are very fast as as you move the sensor around. At first, I wasn't so sure about the detachable sensor but found it to be an advantage. You can hold the meter in front of you as you move the sensor to different places, instead of having to move the whole meter and having it harder to see or being unable to read it because of glare on the screen.For the price, you can't beat it and it serves my purpose well. I'd definitely recommend this unit and the only reason that I gave it four stars instead of five, was because I didn't know that I'd need an electronics (or eyeglass sized) screwdriver for the battery door. 4Great, accurate meter for my purposes - lighting industry I'm in the lighting industry so I take fc levels both before and after project installations. This is a great budget meter. I like that it is hand-held and you don't have to deal with a cord if you're just using it at belt height. The retractable cord still allows remote use if necessary, but for my purposes - I don't really need that functionality. I do wish the protector cap that goes over the photo-receiver was tethered somehow. I have to keep track of where I put it when I use the meter... 5
