Customer Reviews

when it works it's great - I'd give it 5 stars if it worked ...Well, when it works it's great - I'd give it 5 stars if it worked all the time. But here's the rub - the computer doesn't always recognize a mount event, and that can be frustrating. Here are the details.I have a MacBook Pro running Yosemite 10.10.5. I bought this device because I wanted to use the old hard drives from our two laptops as backup clones for the SSD drives that replaced them. I know that other reviews have been critical, but I don't think they've quite captured what's going on here. The proper sequence to use this device is 1) power it up; 2) insert a drive into one of the bays (doesn't matter which); 3) connect the thunderbolt cable (already connected to the RocketStor) to your computer's thunderbolt port. Because the drive is powered through the cable and not the AC adaptor, the power light and blue LED next to the bay containing you drive should light upon cable insertion into your computer's port.. However, for some reason the computer doesn't get a mount signal from the thunderbolt cable insertion as it should. In this case the power light on the RocketStor is lit but the LED indicator for the filled bay is not (interestingly, the drive IS powered and spinning). But The drive is not logically mounted in OSX and Disk Utility doesn't see it. So you have to pull the cable out of the thunderbolt port (thereby powering down the drive), wait a few seconds and reinsert to try again. I've had to do this upwards of 10 times before OSX will recognize the mount event and logically mount the disk. Once it mounts, everything works splendidly at a very fast 10Mbs.I've had 1 case where the drive appears to mount (LED bay light is lit) but OSX still doesn't show it. This is problematic, because the only action possible at this point is to remove the thunderbolt cable from the laptop, but doing so causes the drive to be improperly dismounted (even though OSX doesn't show it mounted). Now when I reinsert the thunderbolt cable into the laptop, OSX reports the disk was improperly dismounted and proceeds to verify the disk by running something (fschk?) to verify. Argh. The thunderbolt cable is new as is the RocketStor. My best guess is that the interface electronics in the RocketStor do not properly implement the handshake with thunderbolt/OSX, based upon other reviews here.3super fast, video editingHighPoint YOU ALMOST HAD IT!!! This thing rocks, but all of you just know that it terminates the thunderbolt series because there's only 1 thunderbolt port. WHY did you do this? I have three of these, all fill with drives, super fast, video editing, photo editing... awesome, BUT I can't get enough thunderbolt ports and there's not such thing as a TB hub (TB is series based technology). I hope you have a good technical reason for doing this, because this is a huge flop.If you came out with another version with a continuation of TB, I'd buy it. Maybe Alibaba.5The Solution to Bypass the Fusion Drive of iMac 5KPerfect solution for bypassing the Fusion Hard Drive of 5K iMac.THE PROBLEM: the 1TB Fusion Drive sucks over sustained read/write. On Blackmagic speed test, I was seeing around 138-160 which is fast for a HDD but not an SSD. Using this dual-bay with a 2TB Samsung SSD (with the SSD set up as the boot disk), I was seeing read of 550 Mb/s and write of 400 Mb/s on BlackMagic Speed Test. No more rainbow wheels when opening a dozen webpages at once. And I don't have to break open my iMac 5K to replace the Fusion Drive.I have had it for 6 months and using the second bay to write 4K Compressor files export from Final Cut Pro X weekly. No hiccups.UPDATE MAY 1-2016 - still going strong. I had accidentally disconnected the cable and the unit looked like it was dead but it wasn't.5it works!Bought this to replace a similar unit from another company. This one works. And it works well. I'm using Samsung SSD's in this unit with Final Cut Pro X. It does okay in this application. For backup and transferring files, it's as fast as can be expected for the system. For me, it was about extending the life of my Mac (2013 vintage trash can model) as long as I can. For this, it works well and for me a reasonable cost alternative to buying actual Thunderbolt 2 drives. Now, I can use naked drives, which video consumes at an alarming rate.5Almost There But...Bought this product recently to clone my Mac Mini (Late 2012) startup disk to the Samsung EVO 860 SSD (which I also bought at the same time). The setup worked flawlessly and now my Mac Mini boots up from the SSD mounted in the storage dock. And to top it all, the boot up time is super fast (less than 30 sec, compared to more than 5 min on the old HDD). And the best part, I did not even have to open up my Mac Mini to install the SSD!However, there are two main pain points with this product, else I would have given it a 5-star rating:1. NO Thunderbolt cable was included in the package. This has to be bought separately.2. It would be good to have some form of a top enclosure to protect the SSD (which is sticking out of the dock) from accidental knocks. But, ultimately, I am just happy that my Mac Mini has been given a new lease of life! :)4Very fast and reliable but, don t miss the cable/power tricks!I've been looking at this product since last year; it seemed like a perfect match for My Mac Book Pro. But I didn t buy until early his month because, I had read many testimonials from owners stating that their first unit was DOA, or couldn't recognize their drive or never powered on. Seemed like too risky of a proposition to slap down a few hundred bucks and just take my chances. So, it got put on a back burner for a few more months as I progressively got more and more annoyed by USB 2.0 "speed".Just as I was about to go USB 3.0, I decided to give the forums and user reviews one more shot to see if anything had changed. Over the last few months it looks like a lot of other suckers decided to go for it. The new batch of feedback suggested that maybe these issues weren't related to the product, but rather unfamiliarity with the new interface. Several reported that what seemed like a DOA dock was actually a cabling issue, or sleep mode being mistaken for instability (Thunderbolt supposedly actually supports sleep mode unlike most USB docks, which may have caught some buyers off guard). After using the thing for 2 weeks, I have seen just about every problem I had read about, yet the dock actually works just fine. I've no doubt a few were actually DOA or damaged during shipment, but at this point I suspect it s just people not used to the new interface.Drive not detected? No Power? Just make sure the power cable AND Thunderbolt cables are inserted at all times. I actually learned this from a Pegasus related forum topic (completely unrelated to this product). Thunderbolt devices won't power on without the Thunderbolt connection - you need an active port, and a functional cable. No Thunderbolt cable, no power the button won t respond and someone could easily mistake it for DOA if this happened the first time it was used. Likewise, you can power down a Thunderbolt device by simply unplugging or letting the system enter sleep mode. Pulling the cable doesn t just cut off the juice like in a USB dock. A Thunderbolt device will actually command drives to spin down! Yes it works - try it, you can hear and feel the drives react. This dock has completely changed how I approach backup hours have turned into minutes and minutes to seconds. No surprise that many seem to be using this with digital cameras (transferring video from SSD film to their workstations). To sum it up, it s not cheap, but it is extremely fast and easy to use once you get used to the cabling. If you need cheap, USB is hard to beat. But if you don t feel like waiting ages for something to finish, like, me this is a much better product. Read up before buying it s worth the investment.5Two units dead on arrivalDead on arrival. Power supply brick has a blue LED, which illuminates, but device LEDs do not turn on (not a good sign). Hoping for the best, I plug a drive in (a new WD 3TB 3.5" disk) and connect a thunderbolt cable into a 2011 iMac. Disk Utility sees nothing. Plug it into a 2013 MacBook Pro. Still nothing.I contact Amazon, and they quickly ship me a replacement unit. Replacement doesn't work either, same behavior. Did HighPoint even test these things before putting them in the box? Yikes.Five stars, as usual, to Amazon for their return policy and process.1Quick, So farHave not made much use of this yet, but in initial tests, it is quite swift with SATA-3 drives. Intent is to rapidly consolidate data from backup drives; haven't had time to attack that project. Nicely constructed and positive, sturdy interface physically with the loose drives. Seemingly a better solution than fixed TB drives. Must get some more Wiebe boxes, though.Presently using it to host a 4 TB WD Black drive for Time Machine backups. The laptop is connected to the TB cable, the drive spins up and the backup begins the update automatically. A superior solution to a drive hooked to the Airport Extreme (10 minutes to update as opposed to an hour or two over WiFi) and when unmounting the disk, the drive spins down and power drops. Still need to order those Wiebe boxes, though, I guess. BTW, the initial TM backup of 180 GB took less than an hour, as opposed to overnight or longer on WiFi.Now have a second dock coming in for the Mini (different room) when the current external fills up. A fast solution for backups, at a minimum, and yes, I finally ordered some more Wiebe boxes for the loose drives. (Amazon now shows plastic drive boxes as well.)UPDATE: Second box here and works fine. Will put it on the Mini in a day or so as its current TM volume is nearly full.ORE UPDATE: It appears I have been using these TB units for more than a year and they have been flawless performers. Since the drives are naked you can hear the seek noise a little bit, but it s not bothersome. Speed is dramatic when large transfers are called for. I definitely recommend these as an economical, speedy dock solution.5Run away! This an awful device made by a terrible company! This thing makes me wish I could build a time machine to go back and tell myself NOT to buy it! It's very temperamental, only working sporadically. When it does work, I don't ever want to pull the drives out because I never know when they will re-mount. Even when I eject the drives off the desktop, they continue to spin adding wear and tear and reducing their lifespan. However the WORST part is their customer (lack of) service. They have a phone number and Skype address both of which they NEVER answer. You can only communicate with them through a completely archaic portal that looks like it was designed in the 90's. I asked to return the unit for a replacement. In order to do so, they sent me a 3 PAGE instructional PDF on how to fill out their RMA. They let me know that if I didn't fill it out perfectly the process would be voided and I'd have to start all over again. Also, if you don't reply to them in a short timeframe, they will void the RMA and start the process all over again. These people are total JERKS! Two weeks after I sent it they said they were STILL testing the unit and didn't know if they'd send me a new one or not. It took them over a MONTH to decide to send me a new one which...guess what...STILL DOESN'T WORK very well. They are the WORST!1Paired with a SATA SSD, works perfectly as an external boot drive for my Late 2012 iMacThe hard drive in my Late 2012 iMac is starting to die. Since the hard drives in iMacs are not user accessible (at least not without major surgery), I decided to use an external drive as my boot and system drive. I bought the HighPoint Dual-Bay Thunderbolt 10Gbps Storage Dock (RocketStor 5212) to house it, along with a Samsung SSD drive. I put the drive in the HighPoint, plugged everything in, then...Booted to recovery mode (Command-R at boot chime).Reformatted the disk to HFS+ journaled (with GUID partition map).Reinstalled MacOS.Once MacOS was installed, I followed the prompts to migrate data from a Time Machine backup (Users, Documents, etc. I clicked all the options).Everything is up and running great! During the OS install process, the drive format was changed to APFS (instead of HFS+) since I'm running High Sierra.Lastly, I went into System Preferences and turned on FileVault (which is still running in the background and will probably take another day or two). The best part: Now my 2012 iMac is even faster than the day it was brand new!The Samsung SSD drive I used was: Samsung 860 EVO 1TB 2.5 Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-76E1T0B/AM)5
