Customer Reviews

set up was easy purchased this wireess extender despite some reviews saying how hard it was to set up. I must say setup was a snap. I inserted the CD and simply followed the instructions. Nothing could have been easier. The signal broadcast is fantastic. Much greater than my previous wireless G range extender.the only issue was that setup had to be done on a PC. CD would not work with my mac. I can only assume the company has redone the setup CD and software, thus the ease of installation despite many of the reviews claiming issues with install. Use the CD, it just works!!!UPDATE December 8thExtender is now not working. Not sure what happened between last night and this morning, but we cannot access the internet through the extender. Will post solutions once I talk with tech support. I am assuming there is a problem with my settings that will easily be resolved.UPDATE December 8thCalled tec support and they were very helpful. Reset the range extender, and them configured it manually. No more CD. Within 5 minutes we were up and running. Fingers crossed that now everything will work as advertised. A little more effort than just using the CD, but still easy. May be a good idea to call support and have them walk you through the install from the beginning. 4Good one This is a good Wireless Access Point with a reasonably priced one. If people go through BestBuy or any other retail electronic store, they may have to pay a very heft hefty prices on it. Amazon reasonabily priced it. Installation was a breez. I am using it mainly for streaming YouTube videos (lots of others are there, but you have to subscribe and pay for it) of my favorite video clips available at their site. My LinkSys wireless router is in the basement which connects to a DELL desktop via a TOSHBIA modem, Then I brought this newly bought Access Point to the first floor, and connected to the SONY BRAVIA (with BVIL module) thorugh RJ45 cable. Of course, there are other cable to connect to the BVIL from the back side of TV to this module - that is just related to TV. I configured through WebInterface provided for this unit. It properly detected the device, then boom from that moment onwards everything was eye-catching. Though it rated 300 mps, I am getting only 135 mps, which is more than sufficient to watch the Internet videos on TV. A very good and compact product, which you can hide it behind the TV, so that guests at your home will wonder where these videos are coming out, which they might have seen only on PCs. Very pleased with this product.CHANDRAMOHAN 4Great Product I do computer repair in San Diego and bought one of these for a client a few months ago. They wanted to extend the range of their wireless network and they needed to get internet access for a desktop that was not near any source that could provide easy internet access. They had tried to use a wireless USB adapter on it, but that wasn't working as well as they wanted.Setup was easy it has worked very well.Same client called me up a few weeks ago and wanted to get internet access for their DirectTV unit as well. So, purchased another hwren1, set up static ips on both units, and then hooked the second unit into the extended network that was broadcast by the first Hawking unit. Internet access to the direct tv and desktop was instant via the ethernet port and wireless access works perfectly as well. 5Works Perfectly Finally I am able to write a review now that I have a good WiFi Signal. I have an office set up in my basement and I could not get a good signal from my home WiFi network. My ISP, who shall remain unnamed, let's just say their name is an acronym that starts with A and ends in T and they have been around since the dawn of communication via wire, told me that what I needed was to buy more service from them. I read about this little device as I was researching ways to get a better signal and ordered it on impulse. The setup was so simple, a prehistoric human could do it. Within minutes I was blazing across the internet again and ordering more stuff from Amazon that I don't need :) I highly recommend if you need to extend your WiFi signal because the router provided by your ISP is a worthless piece of junk. 5It works! I was looking for a product to extend a signal to my guest house. Was a little hesitant when I saw the 1 star reviews. However, I tried different brands but they all either didn't give me the signal I wanted or just didn't work so I thought what the heck.Setup:Amazon shipped it to my house in one day - Go Prime! I quickly took it out of the box and took it to my guest house. There's a setup CD but the guide says to use the web browser. Going through the setup took about 2 minutes. Typed in the address of the smart repeater, logged in and after a few seconds, it automatically scanned and found my network. I'm about 300 feet away and my guest house usually gets 1 bar from my router. The antennas on the HW2R1 must be stronger because it showed the signal strength to be around 40%. Selecting the network, I clicked connect and went through the rest (it just asked for wireless passwords and gave me an option to name the wireless network of the smart repeater myself). At the end, it asked me to reboot and I crossed my fingers. Other WiFi repeaters had all failed at this point. The product said it was done and it asked me to click "Ok". I did, then i got a failed message! "Damn it" then i noticed that my WiFi was connected to a different network and I noticed the smart repeater was there, but with full bars! Selecting it, I connected to it, then refreshed the page. Hazah! I had internet! The damn thing worked and I had full bars!Other: One thing I did have problem with was the speed. Doing a internet speed test showed that I was getting drastically lower signal (I have cable internet and I usually get 25Mbps/5Mbps). My first test after setup showed i was getting (4Mbps/1Mbps). Doing a quick check on their website FAQ, they advised that I change the smart repeater's channel and change the security of the device. It worked. I now get around 20Mbps/4Mbps! It's a slight drop but now I get good signal in my guest house.Other2: For those who commented saying they get no signal/worse signal, I'm not sure what they were doing. I got 1 bar from my router in my guest house and when I placed the smart repeater, I got 5 bars from it. There's two signals! Your computer will see your router AND the new smart repeater. Make sure you connect to the smart repeater. 5STAY FAR AWAY FROM HAWKING PRODUCTS These are the most frustrating piles of junk you can possibly waste your money on. I have setup/installed over 8 of these for various customers over the past 10 years and every single one of them has had their own messed up problems where they quit working and need to complerely reset or dont work at all right out of the box like this one. I have several customers that need to extend range and I have tried several, but almost none are actual repeaters so the choices are very limited. I keep coming back to the hawking hw2r1 hoping that they will release a revision of the product or a firmware update that will fix the issues, but it never happens. No infact they are far worse now than ever before. Now they dont even turn on AT ALL. The techs are always busy AF dealing with their busted products and when you finally do get through to one, you might as well be talking to a robot, because they are about as intelligent as a pile of metal. This company should ve ashamed of themselves and should pull their entire product line and shut it all down. They are complete failures. 1HWREN1 - It does exactly what I needed it to do I recently purchased an Apple iPad. Due to a documented design issue, my iPad's wi-fi reception was pretty lousy. My D-Link DIR 655 router is located in my home office, about 50 feet away from my family room, where I spend most of my time. My iPhone, two laptops and a media center PC have no connectivity issues from this distance, but the iPad could never hold a signal lock. I purchased the HWREN1 in hopes of correcting my iPad connection issues. The HWREN1 was easy to set up. I would recommend that you bypass the installation CD and use the web interface instead. I had a small problem using the CD, where the setup repeatedly cut off the last few characters of my password. I was able to correct this by doing the setup through the web interface instead. With the HWREN1 setup in my family room, the iPad connection issues are a thing of the past. It has also inproved the overall wi-fi signal for the entire house (2 stories). No more iPad dead zones. I'm very very happy with my purchase of the HWREN1. 4Works as advertised The Hawking wireless range extender has made a huge difference in the stability of my Internet connection throughout my home. Before purchasing this range extender, the connection was very weak unless you were within 25 feet of the modem. This short distance wasn't very convenient and caused a lot of frustration. The Hawking range extender was easy to install and has worked like a charm. We've been using this product for nearly a year now and have had absolutely no problems with it at all. If you're experiencing weak wireless connections, I would highly recommend purchasing the Hawking wireless range extender. You won't be sorry. 5Works GREAT if it is configured properly. tremendous signal gain. When setting this booster up, there are several important things to consider.1. After connecting to the HAWKING WREN2 wireless network and putting 192.168.1.240 in your browser you will access the router's web server. Enter the default username and password which will be listed. Be sure to set the wireless security settings the same as your Router. If your router uses WEP then set the booster for WEP etc. Be sure to apply the settings. Do this before running the setup wizard. If you do not do this properly, you will be able to connect to your booster but the Internet will not work.2. This system supposedly allows you to name it with the same name (SSID) as your router. It then is supposed to allow "roaming" using your router's name and connect to the strongest signal. This did NOTwork reliably for me. My tablet would work ok for a few hours then it would disconnect from the booster and connect back to my main router (as noted by the reduced signal syrength). Rebooting the booster would help for a few hours then I was back connected to my main router again.I found a way to make the booster work wonderfully and very reliabily.RECOMMENDATION: Configure the booster to use a different wireless name (SSID) than your main router. For instance if your main router is named MYROUTER this can be accomplished in the setup wizard by unchecking the appropriate box in the setup wizard, and entering a different name for it ie. MYROUTER2. Then in the setup wizard, still connect the booster to your MYROUTER for the source. Let the system pick the channels. Apply the changes.NOTE: This router has a default network of 192.168.8.1 while many main routers have a default network of 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1. This is not a problem as the booster will join your router's network and recieve a valid IP address from it. HOWEVER, it will appear to be joining, and when it leaves it's own network, it will appear to hang and the browser "page not found" will come up. This is normal as the booster has joined your main router's network. If you had set everyting properly your new MYROUTER2 wireless network will show up. Connect to it and you are set to go. It will require you to enter the security key the first time you connect as with any new protected wireless networks. If it all gets messed up, nothing is lost, press the reset button on the back of booster FOR 30 seconds, reconnect to the HAWKING WREN2 wireless and try again.Happy surfing! 5Fixing slow repeater speed/losing speed There are a few bad reviews for this product that inspired me to write this review. I was initially nervous to order because of them. However this product has an external receiver antenna, which is hard to find in a repeater (most are internal etc.). I, at first, like many other users(according to other reviews) had problems with the speed of my connection after it being repeated. Speed test on primary router 19Mb, after being repeated it dropped to 3mB. I also had 100% signal strenght fyi. Other than the speed problem that I fixed, this repeater works well for me.when connected to the repeater. type in 192.168.5.200 Go to General Setup> Home Wireless> Advanced SettingsSteps I took to improve speed1. Make sure the channel of the primary router and repeater are the same. Channel's 11 and 1 seem to be overall the least used.2. Beacon interval 1-2 wireless clients: 197 199 211 223 227 229 233 239 241 3-5 wireless clients: 149 151 157 163 167 173 179 181 191 193 6+ wireless clients: 97 101 103 107 109 113 127 131 137 139 Changed your beacon interval by picking one of the number above corresponding to the amount of wireless clients you will have on average3. Channel width 20mhz4. CTS protect auto5. WMM on6. Use WPA2 AES (NOT mixed) on both primary and repeaterIf you have a lower than 70% signal strength lowering Fragment Threshold might or might not help.Play around with the settings that i mentioned 5
