Customer Reviews

Just one flawFirst off, I am coming from a Sekonic L-758 DR and I love that meter. I wanted a meter that would be smaller, lighter and still do the job. My friend has the Digipro F and said this has many more improvements. So I decided to order it, I was thrilled with the size and quality of the product. It was lite yet durable. I went out to do some testing and shooting in dim light and that's where the flaw was found. It has no back light.I know some people think that's not a necessity but for me it is. I thought I wasn't activating it, looked the meter over, searched on line and was really disappointed. How can a meter cost $310 and not have a back light? If you don't need or never shoot in dim light then I say go for it! But if you're like me and don't want to carry another piece of gear, like a flashlight, stay away! Other then that, it's a great meter. 3DelaminationThe Meter is quite Good but PVC Panel on Case was delaminated! 4Expensive for the build quality, otherwise not bad...A few quick disjointed thoughts on this, comparing a little with the Sekonic 478, which has similar capabilities. We have a pretty high-end meter here, with a decidedly low-end build quality. It should be made out of titanium and gorilla glass for what Gossen is charging, instead of light, easily-abraded plastic. The mode-switching control switch feels cheap too, and is hard to use with any precision.**(UPDATE: the display fell off and I had to glue it back on. Still functional, but yeah, wow)**The front-facing dome doesn't swivel. This isn't a deal breaker, but I often take incident readings while facing the camera position, and that becomes awkward with this unit. The good news about the dome is that it facilitates a beautifully sleak, easily-pocketed design. The battery is a rechargeable lithium-ion. AAA might have been better for me, but at least it doesn't need a hard to find disposable like a CR123. It charges with the included adapter or directly through mini-USB, which can be done pretty easily, anywhere -- as long as you have a cord handy.Wireless triggering is where the magic is, with several protocols supported (Elinchrom, Broncolor, Phottix), though, sadly, no Pocket Wizard at this time. With the Sekonic 478 you're stuck with one brand. You'd have to buy a Phottix-enabled 478 AND an Elinchrom-enabled 478 if you needed both. Anyway, Gossen adds support via firmware upgrades (Broncolor, with the most recent v. 1.18), and that seems to be an advantage.Like all of my Gossens you can grab reflected measurements (20 degree, in this case) without an additional adapter. I primarily use hand-helds for incident measurements, but reflected can come in handy when I'm out and about with a meterless film camera -- it makes it a better 'everywhere' utility than the Sekonic 478.The display isn't great in bright light, but I find it easier to see than the touchscreen of the Sekonic 478. Oh, the display also isn't a touchscreen, but a display navigable with hardware buttons. This is a good thing, IMO; I don't care for the Sekonic 478's touchscreen. It boots with virtually no delay, and wakes from 'sleep' mode instantly with a press of the measure button. You have to jump into menus to change the ISO -- this is inconvenient with digital photography, where of course we change ISO at will. You can, however, pre-configure and save three different camera setups and switch back and forth pretty easily. The three configurations can even include different radio systems. So I could configure one for home, where I use, say, a 400 iso and Phottix triggers, and one for the work studio where we use Elinchrom and typically a lower iso.. You get the idea.I like this meter a lot as a carry-everywhere utility. Overall I prefer it over the Sekonic 478 for field use, though you could argue the 478 offers more features for less money. The built-in reflected meter and multiple triggering protocols tip the scale for me, plus it powers up instantly. Having one is certainly a no-brainer for anyone using the supported wireless triggers, particularly, again, if they are using more than one brand of trigger. This probably isn't an awesome $500+ meter, but it's a very good $200 meter. If you can get one used or on sale, or if you're feeling rich, go for it.*UPDATE: I see the price has dropped a bit -- still too expensive at around $400. The wireless triggering point has become moot since I've switched everything over to Godox; I am again without a triggering meter :D * 3Good digital meteThis is a replacement meter for a very old Vivitar analog meter. I like the digital meter; it is quick, repeatable, accurate. 4pic up a coax flash sync cord so you can trigger this thing to the strobe unit like a bossViva film! Well it isn't going to make you Ansel Adams but if you're a 'by the numbers' kind of photog this Gossen is an economical option for checking those photons. No spot reading but it does have incident and refracted on lock. Controls are minimal. You'll want to read the manual. If your plans involve flash photography, pic up a coax flash sync cord so you can trigger this thing to the strobe unit like a boss. 4It does it's job!Wanted a small capable meter that could be easily carried and this does that. Not crazy that it's always on when you insert the battery, but apparently doesn't use much energy doing so. For the price offers several functions including flash metering. It's all plastic but really what isn't anymore. 5Easy 5 StarsI've only had this meter for a couple of days but I learned how to use it in just a couple of minutes. It is straight forward very easy to use but as high tech as they come { without all the bells and whistles I have no use for } . What I needed more than just a good light meter was one with both Aperture and Shutter priority, this option allows me to quickly set the meter to one or the other depending on what the subject is or doing, ie: Sports or Portraits.I give this meter an easy 5 stars...Bill Cohen 5Affordable and does what it's supposed to do.[performance]this product isn't magic, using it with no knowledge of photography would probably be frustrating. it will give you the parameters to create a balanced scene. however, because photography is an art, you may want to over or under expose a scene to suit your creative needs. this product is only a tool.in the street: sometimes situations can change simply by having a camera in your hand. being able to meter and have the camera ready to shoot before taking it out can be useful.in the studio: when shooting continuous light or natural light, the digisix will help with your ratios and save time. this product will not be useful to you if you are using strobes or flash.concerns with the digisix not being able to be switched off faded in time, as the battery life proved to be amazing.[quality]well made and can definitely take a beating. though, you should probably keep it in the little case.very easy to use and has a decent range of functionality for a product with 2 buttons.[overall]a well made, inexpensive, nifty time-saver. 5It does exactly what need it forI do nature photography and hike long distances. Weight is super important to me and that is why I bought this light meter. I find it to be accurate and small. It is very easy to use. I find the build in thermometer very handy but my only gripe here is that it does not show fractions of a degree but rounds the temperature off to the nearest degree. It is expensive for what you get but then there is nothing similar on the market 5Junk. Manual doesn't match readouts on screen. Displays are cryptic and confusingJunk. Manual doesn't match readouts on screen. Displays are cryptic and confusing, probably because they are badly translated from German. Unless you use this every single day, or preferably several times a day, I positively guarantee you will forget all the crazy little symbols and nonsense they have built into the display (in lieu of actual letters of the alphabet). Many instructions in the manual do NOT produce they results on the display they say they'll produce. It's just silly junk. Buy one that actually works in the way the manual says. I had this shipped to me in SE Asia. So the cost of returning it would just make me angrier than I already am. I paid a LOT to get it here, plus import fees and taxes, and I would have to pay a lot to return it. Also, the product page suggests you buy a particular battery to go with it. Unfortunately, that battery has absolutely nothing to do with this device. Who knows what it's for. It's just a scam to get a few more of your dollars. I can't stop the battery now and it will not fit anything I will ever, ever own, so it will go into the trash when it arrives. Good old Scamazon strikes again. This only requires a tiny button batter. Just scam after scam after scam. Really, really angry. Stick with Sekonic. Yes, they are criminally over-priced (more scams), but at least their upper-tier units work as expected, more or less. If you do buy this one, keep the crappy manual with it at all times, because I promise you will need to refer to it if you haven't used this for a month. Just a ridiculous product. Maybe it's insanely accurate -- who cares if it's absurd to use? So, so angry. 1
