Customer Reviews

GoGogate 2 is a gamechanger!!! This was a last minute decision as I was looking at another wifi opener for my 2 garage doors. I have to say, this was by far the best decision I made as it has functioned flawlessly since install.I opted to install gogogate2 right into the back of my garage opener unit instead of at the 2 button openers. That way you can t even notice it is even there. I mounted it on top of my garage opener unit. The only thing I had to do is purchase another sensor ($35) and some bell wire and string it to my other opener with some wire screws. The wire is really the only thing visible with this install method which is the best imo.I used the app on my phone to set up the account and wifi and a tablet for the step by step instructions which really made the install error-proof. When everything was synced and functioning, I downloaded the IFTTT App and synced them to Alexa so I can open either garage door before I get to the garage via voice trigger. You have to say Alexa Trigger and then whatever you want to say to open the door.I downloaded the geo fence option on IFTTT which automatically closes my garage when I leave the house and opens it when I return. When I pulled up to my driveway for the first time after install, I was shocked my garage door was open, but then I remembered geofence and I even got a push notification on my phone. This truly is the best wifi-type garage add-on and it has worked flawlessly since I install. Even people who are not really tech-saavy can install this because the directions are so detailed. 5Easy to install hardware - software feels not quite baked yet. Just installed last night. Installation is very easy and straight forward - which is why i purchased this unit. I have a 3 car garage so I had to remove each push button and add the Gogogate wiring harness. That process took about 13 minutes including plugging in the unit. Next I had to install each wireless senor on the door - prob took 5 minutes total (thats including unpacking and installing the included batteries). After installing the hardware I downloaded the app. I have an android and the rest of my family have apple phones. The app looks pretty much the same across both platforms. The UI is not really user friendly. It took me FOREVER to figure out how to add the wireless sensors. Each door has a sensor combo box that its prepopulated as hard wired. Its not obvious (at all) that you can click on that box to change from wired to wireless. Most multi-select combo boxes have some sort of indication that they are selectable - this one doesn't. I also don't like the fact that after you get the unit on your wifi network you still can't access it via pc until you enable the Remote Access. After setting up the software, I found the app feels very laggy. Clicking on the arrow to change doors is difficult because the press area is VERY small and even after finding the area on the screen the app seems to hesitate before changing the door. When I open a door, I sometimes have to push the app slider a few times to get it to respond. I also found that after a door is closed the senor will sometimes show it as open for up to a minute before the correct status is listed. It would also be nice if the unit had a proximity option where it could automatically open a door (via gps location) when I'm close to my house rather than having to fumble around with my phone, launch the app, finding the correct door, and then open it.So I would say the software works but its obvious these guys are more hardware oriented and need help on the app side. If they get the software improved, I would def rate this a 5-star device! 4For IFTTT or 3 garage doors go with Gogogate2; For direct/simple Alexa or Google Assistant integration go with Nexx I opted for this after testing out both this and NEXX GARAGE. Depending on your needs either can be a good solution. I have listed some pros and cons below:Pros:1. Integration with IFTTT. This is the primary reason I went with Gogogate2 over NEXX Garage. Nexx Garage's integration with google home/alexa is straightforward, but there is a significantly bigger delay in triggering the command. With IFTTT integration, I could keep the command really short, and with pixel buds, I simply say "open" and "close" to open and close the garage automatically. Compare that with Google Assistant, where I would have to say "Ok google, Ask Nexx Garage to open door"2. Manage 3 garages instead of 1. I only use 1, but this is an obvious advantage over Nexx which requires a separate device per garage door.3. Security camera support. Integrates with any camera that has a snapshot URL.4. Really excellent and prompt email support. I went through a lot of Q&A with them and I always got super fast responses. Exactly what I expect from a tech company.Cons:1. Clunky configuration interface. Its obvious that they stuck a web page into the android app for configuration. As a result, everything is super tiny and hard to read. The Nexx app is a proper android app using material design.2. Security camera support is a hit or miss and since it is based on screenshots rather than video, it isn't smooth and has considerable delay. Since not all models are listed, you may need to reach out to their support to find if there is support and the closest equivalent model number (e.g. Foscam FI9900P should use the 'FI9805E' model number). Pure RTSP/ONVIF cameras are not supported (if you are a techie, you could work around it using iSpy image export, a tiny webserver, and DDNS). And the image is square and a bit unnatural. Very good chances are that you will resort to the security camera app instead of this one eventually for a live feed.3. Video plugin (for security camera support) is paid $30/3 years. I don't understand why this is a paid functionality. Its not much money, but still...4. No direct integration with Google Assistant or Alexa. Requires you to understand and configure IFTTT (which is fairly simple, but my mom couldn't do it).5. No status IFTTT receipe. Cannot check the current status of garage through IFTTT. You'll have to open the app and look at the current status.Wash:1. Both Nexx and Gogogate2 (IFTTT really) suck at geofencing. I am usually at the garage by the time it detects that I entered my home area (radius of about 1/4 mile from my house) and I am not willing to have a very large area (say like a mile radius) to give the geofence time to pick up that I am close to home. I would still give gogogate2 some points here since it is an IFTTT issue and not theirs, and I can control it using google assistant and not have to look at my phone.2. Installation of both was fairly easy. The Nexx garage instructs you to attach it to the back of the Garage Door Opener, but Gogogate2 asks you to attach it to the wall push button instead (which in my view is more complicated). I simply attached the latter to the GDO (as Nexx suggests) and I prefer it that way. 4What I learned and why I now love the gogogate2. I must admit that I was very frustrated trying to install this garage door opener despite the step by step instructions. I learned that it was my fault and not the products, so I thought I would tell my story so others could have a better experience.First of all, they tell you it is best to use the app and to follow those instructions on a device other than the phone you will install the program app on. So I juggled two Android phones in a cold garage and, of course, they would time out.INSTALLATION ALERT: You can do all the programming in a warm house if you follow the directions on your computer as you install it in the app on your phone. Just plug in the gogogate2 near your computer.I had had the problem that the first time I tried to install this in a freezing garage, not only did I have the problem of the phones timing out, but the device didn't seem to function. This was MY FAULT. What I did not realize was that the piece to which the wires are attached has no numbers on it so I was installing the two connectors to the back of my opener wall switch and then plugging it into the gogogate2 device. When you attach the green piece with the wires on it to the white gogogate2 controller there are numbers on the white piece. I had connected what I thought were the two wires from the first connection 1 but found out that I had it backward and once plugged into the device, they were actually labeled as number 3. Be sure to check that you install the correct set of wires. So now I was able to control my garage doors (I have two) using the app, but not using Alexa. LEARNING CURVE THREE: If you search the Alexa app for a compatible program for gogogate2, you will find that it lists a program, that once you link it and tell Alexa to open the garage door it will ask for a pin number. That is because it thinks you are using the brand of garage door opener. You cannot link an app to Alexa. You must use IFTTT and link the Alexa and gogogate apps that way. Now when I tell Alexa "Trigger open garage door," it tells me it is sending the message to IFTTT and the door opens. It also uses the same programs to close the door by voice. I can also open and close the doors using the gogogate2 app.Kudos to Alexa customer support for the patience they had working with me to discover that the IFTTT program needed to be used and walking me through setting up my Applets on this site to make the gogogate2 work with Alexa.I love this product and what it does and hope that my learning curve helps others who may be frustrated. Gogogate is located, I learned, in Spain so although it appears that they have no customer support, they did get back to me via e-mail, but it was Amazon that saved the day. 5No customer service at all....... I had to return this product because it didn't seem to work with Genie garage door opener I have even though I was told it would when I emailed the company before I ordered it. When I installed it step by step per the instructions the app showed the doors as open even though the app was opening and closing the doors. When I contacted the customer support email, I made a change per instructions and then the doors wouldn't open using the app. The following 5 emails proved frustrating because none of the solutions worked. A company that doesn't have a customer service phone number is ridiculous. I u destined answering questions by email is cheaper but it just frustrates the customer. 1AWESOME! 5 Doors and Tips for installation included The system works great! There are a few points that I would like to point out for installation.1. Each controller will handle up to three doors or gates but you can add multiple controllers. I have 5 garage doors to control. I needed two controllers and three extra door sensors since each controller comes with one sensor. You must switch between controllers in the app to control each group of doors. The app does remember the last used controller.2. The app will always default to Door #1 and you must swipe left or right to control Door #2 or #3. Therefore if there is one particular door that you use most, make that door #1. Each door can be labeled with a unique name and the name is what you will see in the app. I use the middle door mainly and I had to go back and rewire the middle door to the #1 terminal so that it would always show up as the default door and I did not need to swipe to select it.Name your controller the PERMANENT name that you want to call it initially. Once it is named, it does not appear that it can be changed. The default name is "home" and that may be fine for the majority of cases.3. It is not clear how to control the doors from a computer. That is done by entering a specific URL:https:// then 10 character controller ID then dot my-gogogate dot com with no spaces.Using that URL and logging in will allow you to control the doors from any browser. The wireless sensors work extremely well. The furthest sensor is 30 feet away from the controller and it picks up fine. The battery level of each sensor displays in the app so you will know when it is low.The temperature at each sensor also displays in the app in both Celsius and Fahrenheit in one-tenth of a degree resolution. The temperature at each door sensor can vary slightly but it appears to be quite accurate. The system also logs each opening and closing of the doors. Thus, when you select a door, at the bottom you can scroll through the times the door was opened and closed. There will be a green icon for when the door was opened and a red icon for when the door was closed. The opening and closings are logged regardless of whether you use the gogogate system to open and close the door. So if you use the garage door push button or if you use the car's remote control it will still log each time the door was opened and closed regardless of what was used to open or close the door. It logs the opening and closing to each one minute in 24hr time and does not log seconds. You can add up to 10 users at no additional cost. It allows you to schedule a user to be able to open the door at a specific time window each day of the week. I have a cleaning lady who comes on the 1st and 3rd Friday of the month. It does not allow me to select the first or third Friday, I would have to select all Fridays and schedule the time window when she arrives.I can also give my children access to a controller and they can use their phones to enter and leave at any time. The scheduling controls each individual controller and you can select individual doors and since I have 3 doors on One controller and two doors on the other controller, I only have to give remote access to One controller if they only need to use a certain set of doors. The vast majority will only need one controller so this is a moot point for most installations. The installation instructions are also some of the best that I have ever seen. Although the installation of the system is not necessarily easy, the step by step instructions makes it as simple as possible. The instructions are not on paper but you go to the gogogate website and follow the instructions on the screen. You generally will need two devices to install the system. Either two phones or a phone and a computer such as a pad or a laptop. Although you could install the system with just a phone the back and forth would be a bigger hassle.Overall, I rate the system as awesome and I have not had a single mishap or failure and I have had the system installed now for over a month. I will update this review if anything changes. 5I performed the the basic set up while comfortably sitting in my house as there are two major ... Got this as a gift and immediately ordered an additional wireless sensor since I have two doors. Prior to setting it up and installing it I went to their website and familiarized myself with the videos they have on installation. Knowing what the basic flow of things goes a long way to easing the overall install. As others have said, I performed the the basic set up while comfortably sitting in my house as there are two major steps to getting this to work. The first is getting the phone app and base unit configured with your installation information, this can be done before you grab any tools or decide where in your garage you're going to put it. So put the battery in the sensor, download the appropriate app to your phone and with the knowledge you gained from watching their videos configure the base station. You can even test that everything is working by holding the sensor horizontal and see if the app says the doors open or holding it vertical with the arrow pointing up to see if the door is closed in the app.Okay, once you are satisfied you got everything configured properly it's time to decide where you want to put it in your garage. Unfortunately I have two doors and the opener buttons are not close together, meaning a trip to the big box store to get 50 ft of doorbell wire (20-22 gauge) and some wire staples. A little creative wiring later I mount the controller with the supplied double stick tape and attach the wires. Now, since I marked the wireless sensors as to which door they go on, I clean off a spot high and in the center of each door and using the double sided tape required install the sensors on the doors with the arrow pointing up. Now is when you want to check to make sure the your sensor is as close to horizontal as possible (yep, a level would help) as if the sensor is tilted when the door is open you may get false reporting. So, I got it all configure and installed. Works like a charm, time to get the app on my wife's Android phone (I have an iPhone). She finds the app and downloads it, opens it up and then comes to me and says "now what?" Exactly, now what? I've already set her up with an Admin account on the GoGoGate2 and thought she'd be sent an email that would walk her through getting connected. No, no that didn't happen and you won't find any instructions anywhere about what to do next. Everything is simple when you know how, so here is THE KNOWLEDGE: open the app on the additional users phone and look for the "g" with a couple of half circles above it at the bottom of the screen and select it. It should take you to a login screen and that is where you use the credentials you setup when you added the additional user. TahDah!Long way to go here to get to why I gave this puppy 5 stars. Beside it not being too difficult set up and install it works and works great. UPS rang my ring doorbell while I was at work, trying to deliver a rather large box (furniture). I told him to put it in the garage and opened the door remotely. He went around and delivered the box in the garage while I watched him on my blink camera. Once he was out I closed the garage door. How cool is that?WAIT!! One more thing, there's an app called IFTTT (if this then that) and there is an pre configured applet in IFTTT that allowed me to connect my phone location to my GoGoGate2. Now, when I get within 1/4 mile of my house my door opens, so by the time I pull into my driveway the door is wide open and ready for daddy to come home. Great for if someone is following you and you can get a little a head of them to duck in and shut the door. Not that that happens, just saying. :o)Now you have to ask yourself "do I really want or need this?" Oh YES, you sure do and if you don't, certainly a loved one does. Besides, how many times have you left home and are miles away and thought "did I close the garage door?" Now you'll know. But you might have to turn around because you forgot your phone. 5It's not without problems - My garage is across the road from my house and using a garage door remote from my house was spotty, at best; sometimes it would work and sometimes it wouldn t. So I wanted something with greater range. Since my router s range included the garage I decided to use wi-fi to activate the doors and Gogogate2 as the instrument. The Gogogate2 item works as advertised; it will open and close your garage doors using an app for your iphone and after about a week of use, seems to do it reliably. However, getting to that point was somewhat of a challenge. The unit arrives with everything necessary to operate 3 doors, including one sensor to indicate a door s position. Included is a booklet style setup guide, perhaps 3 x3 with about 10 pages devoted to actual setup. I found this documentation to be woefully inadequate. Instead of having step-by-step instructions with different scenarios covered as you went along it was sort of nebulous in places with statements like fill all the fields in a 3 simple steps process. You have 2 choices to do the setup; you can use your phone or your PC. I tried with the phone first and it failed so setup was done with my computer.I don t understand why manufacturers skimp on documentation. I have never heard of anyone complaining because there was too much information and it cost next to nothing to have more; so why not cover the possibilities one might run into?So what was missing from the guide? Well, the unit comes to you with 10 electrical ports. Six are used for the garage doors and a 6-pole plug attaches to these. There is also a 4-pole plug included but the booklet does not indicate what this is for. I thought it might be used for a camera connection because the website indicates you can connect a camera, but a camera connection was not addressed either. I later found a download document on their website that indicated the plug is used for a gate installation. Another problem involved the password I used during setup. When I tried to add another user it asked for a numeric password. It wasn t mentioned during setup that the password needed to be numeric and changing it was not without its own challenges. The booklet does not cover the use of Gogogate2 in a network using MAC address filtering which is a common feature on routers today. If you use MAC filtering (I do) you will need the MAC address of the wi-fi adapter in the unit. I could not find this on the device or anywhere in the package. Fortunately, I have a utility which shows me all wi-fi devices within the router s range and gives me their MAC address so I was able to input the address into my router s settings. This utility is not something the average computer user has. Every item using a wi-fi adapter should have the adapter s MAC address printed on it somewhere. The unit itself appears well made and functions as intended most of the time. Occasionally, the wi-fi connection fails if the application is up on the phone for more than a couple of minutes. My feeling is that this should not happen. In operation, there are warnings that a door has been activated; a light flashes and a tone sounds about 10 times. If the door has a sensor the application will indicate the door s position, open or closed. With no sensor the door will always appear open in the application. Gogogate2 mounting is achieved using about a 1 x3 piece of 2-sided tape on the rear of the device. I believe this should be improved upon. I question how well this would stick to unpainted sheetrock or a wooden surface. I screwed a piece of Lexan to the wall and stuck the unit to that. Of course, the other problem with this mounting system is that it s a 1-time affair. Should you need to remove it for any reason you will need to improvise to re-attach it.I should also mention that if you use a sensor it reports a temperature in the application. Mine reads approximately 10 degrees F. too low consistently. I don t use this so it matters not to me.So the Gogogate2 works as advertised, usually, but setup was not seamless, the documentation was inadequate, and the mounting system seemed like a cost-saving afterthought. For these reasons and the missing MAC address I give it 3 stars.Update 1-27-16 - The unit quit working after less than 2 months. It showed up on the phone but the doors wouldn't work. Ended up having to push the reset button on the unit and setting it up from scratch all over again. I will let you know if it quits again.Update 10-7-16 - The unit has worked flawlessly since January and they have improved the app so I'm increasing my rating from 3 stars to 4.Update 11-10-17 - The system has worked flawlessly since that hiccup in Jan. of '16. We just went through a 1-week power outage and it had no impact on the Gogogate. 4Works great, I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 ... Works great, I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 for 2 reasons.1) setup. The setup should be simple if you follow the steps but the connection to WiFi took me longer than I'd like to admit. I know nothing about networks bit I was able to figure it out. When you are setting it up to WiFi there are 2 options, manual and auto. I chose auto as the instructions said to do, I chose my wifi name and entered the password. The unit restarted as it said it would but I got nothing. Instructions said to try again so I started over (from the beginning) 3 more time. Then I tried manual mode and it turns out my security settings were different than the default so now I was up and running.2) compatibility. I have 2 door openers from 2 manufacturers. The old one worked no problem but the Chamberlain opener didn't. I went online to the compatibility checker and it showed how to wire it but it still didn't work. So I went to Google and found out my door had something called security 2.0. my only option was to solder the wires onto the button on the wall button to bypass the security feature (pics attached). That's something that should be made known on the compatibility checker. I wasted a lot of time figuring that out.All in all, after the setup it works great but what should have been a 20 min project turned into a 2 day affair. 4Seems to work really well so far. UPDATE - NOT WITH ANDROID 9 Used this to replace a Chamberlain MyQ that has been nothing but problems since the day it was installed.Pros: I like that it is a contact-closure based system. The MyQ had to learn the door code, and there were frequent problems with getting it to close the door reliably. The problem was, you only got 2 chances to close the door and then you had to manually close it. Try that when you are on the other side of town. This unit synced to my WiFi right away. The setup instructions were clear and concise, unlike the MyQ's that are obscure and difficult to follow. The app gives good reports on who opened the door when, if it is open, the condition of the sensor's battery, and even the temperature inside the garage, with optional extreme-temp-hi-lo warnings, which might come in handy in the winter if you left the door open. The wireless sensor is very easy to sync to the main unit.Cons: The sensor and the unit mount with sticky tape. That's fine for the garage door sensor, but you might want a different option for mounting the unit itself. I attached mine to my opener unit. The harness that connects the unit to the opener or to the wall switch is a little short. However, since I mounted the receiver to the opener, the length of the harness wires was fine. I'm sure that sticky tape may loosen up over time as the motor vibrates while raising/lowering the door.Other: The app shows a down door as red, and an open door is green. That's sort of the opposite of what I would expect. I noticed that when I was operating the app on my phone, it had some issues calling up the log of up/down events. When I am on my home WiFi network, that is not a problem, but on 4G or other networks, it seemed to be very slow to recall the logs, but it does a good job of providing app notifications to your phone and even to email. You need n-band wireless for this unit, to the best of my knowledge. Again, not a problem with my router. The wireless sensor pairs with a 4-digit code; it paired with no problem whatsoever, but be sure to choose "wireless" sensor when you configure the unit, or it will default to wired sensor instead. I already have a IP camera in my garage so I am not exploring Gogogate's option for that service. I saw in app reviews that some criticize the app as a bit dated in the appearance of its interface, but I don't really find its appearance to be dated or negative towards its functionality (I'm on Android 7.1).UPDATE - NOTIFICATIONS NO LONGER WORK WITH ANDROID 9 ON MY NEW PHONE. WHILE I APPRECIATE THE COMPANY BEING HONEST WITH ME, I NOW HAVE TO MANUALLY CHECK MY PHONE TO KNOW IF MY DOOR IS OPEN OR NOT, BECAUSE, AS OTHERS CORRECTLY POINT OUT, THE EMAIL ALERTS COME OUT OF ORDER AND/OR WITH HUGE DELAYS. CAN'T RECOMMEND THIS UNIT ANYMORE; AT THIS POINT IT'S JUST A GLORIFIED GARAGE DOOR OPENER. I WOULD GO BACK TO 5 STARS IF COMPANY UPDATES TO WORK WITH ANDROID 9. 1
