Customer Reviews

TOP NOTCH This was purchased as a gift for a nephew. However, I chose this particular knife as I have had the same one for nearly 20 years. I used it in my daily life as well as my 23 year military career. It has not failed me no matter how hard I used it. I opened letters, boxes, even burlap bails of illegal drugs. I took it camping and fishing. This is a tried and true knife. 5best for the price, could be better, what the heck, it's discontinued I have had a few of these knives that have been sacrificed to the fates (lost), friends, airport TSB folks and courthouse security through the years, and always liked 'em. Nothing will beat the original version with micarta scales which was the classiest knife Gerber ever made. When they changed the blade and put on the nylon handle, they made a great knife that was inexpensive, yet a near-perfect design. It still is, and I'm sorry they discontinued them. That said, the review pointing out that whoever grinds these blades does so unevenly was dead-on. Out of five knives I purchased, all but one were very unevenly ground--double the bevel on one side compared to the other. Grind was fairly coarse as well. On an inexpensive knife that starts sharp and will be sharpened a lot as time goes on, it will probably even out. It does not give me a lot of confidence about Gerber's other Chinese-made knives that sell for more money than the LST's.I would still recommend both the large and small LST for every day carrying, survival kits and a back-up knife when camping. It's just disappointing to see such a great concept and classic knife suffer from uncaring construction.updated 4/26/14:The original Micarta-handled LST's are still available from time to time on ebay and such for fifty bucks or so. Checking out pictures of one of in the listings will show in a second where this knife started, with the utterly well-finished and graceful blade Gerber's Portland shop put on its blades back in about 1981. The original LST is an utter classic (got my first in 1981). The current iteration is a great knife if you never want to worry about abusing or losing a pocketknife, or getting it back from loaning it. The current LST is serviceable, cheap, and worth having a few of.Gerber 46009 L.S.T. Drop Point, Fine Edge Knife 3Old friend This is an excellent pocket knife! The one in my pocket right now is over 25 years old and still gong strong, replacing one I bought 10 years before that at REI and lost. A few years ago I bought a couple of spares here on Amazon (they are only slightly different) just in case. I have more than two dozen pocket knives, most fancier than this one. However, over time this is the one I have used most. If you are looking for an uber practical light and thin knife and don t feel the need to impress anyone with your knife coolness, this is your knife. 5The steel was easy to sharpen This is the third LST I have owned. Lost the first one after ten or so years and the second after another ten years. The salient point is that my experience with individual knives is about ten years each. They never failed. The steel was easy to sharpen, but held a good edge for a long time in day-to-day use. Now, I'm not carving tree stumps into toothpicks, but I do cut a cardboard box or two open daily. I do cut cordage daily. There is the odd letter opened with this knife. I have shaved wood to make things fit. I do whittle my time away, when the opportunity presents. Knife stays sharp enough that it never causes a bother. Stropping brings the blade back and about monthly I will hone it for a few minutes. The size is great. I have 'lost' it in some jean front pockets where the tight fit towards the hip can cause it to stand upright against the back seam. Not so in dress pants. They allow it to fall horizontally where it 'prints' a bit, but not so much that I have stopped carrying it. Wish there was a pocket clip, but have never found one. The weight is such that I don't feel it at all. Like I said, it can get lost in a pocket.Don't expect it to have zero play at the pin. There is a small amount--but, it never seemed to increase over time. Seems like what you have at the start, which is not much, is what you have after a decade. The amount of play has never interfered with the use of the knife. Never made it feel unsafe at all. The blade lock is solid. For fifteen bucks, I don't know that you can do better. 5Great Pocket Knife I have stopped carrying anything else. These are so thin you don't even know you have it till you need it. Sturdy handle and locking mechanism. Decent steel in the blade and it fits great in my hand. I never break them but I have lost them when working on stuff in the field and forget them. I always buy the same one again. 5Great little knife Had one of these small pocket knifes and lost it. Took me years to find another, even though they are readily available from retail stores. But way too expensive from a brick and mortar store. Found them again on Amazon and bought 2. Blade stays sharp and holds an edge even with regular usage. Have put all of the ones I have owned through hell and re-sharpened as needed and they still keep going 5Great kids' knife, solid value in a basic pocketknife for anyone This is a great knife for camping kids. It's the right size, won't rust, is simple to open and safe to close, and inexpensive if lost.My one complaint for adult use would be that the grind angle on the cutting edge is pretty wide. But that makes it tougher when abused too.I also wish it were available in colors again. 5Wow, sharpest little knife I ve owned, so nice I bought a US1 knife from Gerber as well. Small watch pocket carry. Very sharp out of the box, and made in the U.S.A. Made of 420HC alloy. I own Course, Fine and Extra Fine diamond sharpening plates, so keeping an edge on 420 stainless to D2 extreme alloy is a breeze. If you want to use old out of date sharpening equipment, then use old out of date plain carbon steel knives and keep them oiled. Nothing wrong with good ol carbon steel. This knife is very light, easy to carry, easy to open and easy to use. It is also easy to slice your finger open with. No need to sue Gerber, just get a brain. It s sharp. Gerber even warns that it s sharp. I own two Ka-Bar USMC fighting knives, one handed down to me from my father, WW II era, and a much newer version of that knife D2 extreme. Both are very nice knives as well, but are intended for different purposes than these little knives. 5Lightweight, sharpens well, ergonomic This is a good little knife. Designed and made in USA by Gerber. I have had a similar knife to this for many years, made by Schrade years ago. It gets very light duty, but I like the fact that it is lightweight. It's not suitable for farmwork or whittling but it does light work, and stays sharp. It only has two rivets in the tang, so it's not made for anything near heavy duty. One think I like about it is that it has a drilled hole in the shaft to put a leather shoelace on it so its easy to get out of the pocket and helps keep from losing it or misplacing it. 4The Only Small Knife I Carry Over the past 15 years or so I have lost more of these Gerber knives than I care to remember! This time I got smart and bought two at the same time so I will have a spare! I know, fix the problem of why you loose this knife! Seriously, I have a couple other knives of the more expensive brands that I leave in the drawer for every day use. I just love this little Gerber because it is thin and fits in my pocket so well that I hardly know it is there. It also will fit in the coin pocket of most blue jeans. It keeps an edge well, but overall it is just handy to have in my pocket to open all those Amazon boxes that end up on my door step! It is just a great knife to have in your pocket. Honestly, when I don't have it, I feel naked! 5
