Customer Reviews

Item does not stand up to typical use I purchased the item to strap to the side of my four-wheel-drive vehicle and did not use it for nearly 6 months. The first opportunity I had to use it was to chop wood for firewood at the campsite. On day two, The handle broke free from the Axe head. I might add that this was not a handle strike that caused this. The result was actually a quite dangerous situation and fortunately nobody in the surrounding area was hurt. 1little monster beaver ! That little hatchet is really impressive ! i found it to perform very well at some tasks that should be for bigger axes , the head geometry makes it a great little splitter (better than a traditional gransfors hatchet for instance), and it's not a worry to baton on it to split harder wood as there's no eye to the axe head , can't beat it for the price !MAde by Fiskars too, so the quality is there no problem at all ! 5Deformed, jagged metal right where you grip it There is a jagged deformation of the metal right where your hand grips it. It is irritating and will cause an injury to your hand through any rigorous and / or sustained use. This is a shoddy product, and this never should have passed QA. 1Buy this one, over here! Bought this axe for a family car camping trip to Rocky Mountain National Park. First, the axe is light and compact enough for my medium framed 12 y/o son to split logs endlessly (and enthusiastically). The axe really does seem to chop three times faster. It did finally get somewhat dull after a few days of abuse, but it never lost its splitting power. Overall a great buy and a good seller to deal with. 5I literally have split a a cord of firewood ... I literally have split a a cord of firewood with this Gereber 17.5 inch hatchet since my purchase back on 12-2016. The largest piece of firewood I have split with the Gereber 17.5 inch hatchet is 3 to 5 inches round at approximately 18 inches long. Some hardwoods and Fir in a variety of different shapes. The blade is still razor sharp though the blade does need a touch up when I missed a piece of wood I was splitting. I have pounded, split wood down the middle, and slammed this Gereber 17.5 inch hatchet up and down on a chopping block until the wood would split and still the Gereber 17.5 inch hatchet has not buckled under continuous, vigorous usage. Will see down the road if the Gereber 17.5 inch hatchet holds up as I am constantly splitting firewood.I am usually skeptical about making my purchases on line because you lose the tangibility of actually seeing that product in your hand. Before writing a review for a product, I methodically road test that product, over a period of time. My basses for my purchases on Amazon is the product brand , my application requirement and I place 60% of my purchase on the product reviews. 5Legendary This is a great splitting axe that will handle more than you expect it to for its light weight. This is SHARP and has stayed that way for three cords of wood so far.One thing I would check before purchasing is the price of the similar fiskars axe - they are the same company and my gerber even says fiskars on it. 5#1 survival tool. MUST HAVE Dude this hatchet is my favorite piece to my gear ! I went from the fiskars x7 to the gerber Freescape. I was considering the x11 but it has more of a wedge from my observations. This one is basically just an upsized x7 . I don t really consider the x11 a hatchet so I went with the gerber freelance. I wanted something with more bite and this hatchet exceeds my expectations. You can chop 2 times as fast and deep as the gerber 14 hatchet which is basically the fiskars x7. The Scandinavian grind and light weight material used on the freescape is perfect for anyone working with wood whether your builder shelters/camp , splitting fire wood or failing small trees this blows all competition out the way by miles ! I never go hiking or camping with out this! Even limbing trees in your yard, this tool just can t be beat ! 5Good for motorcycle camping This little unit chops above its weight, and carries well on a motorbike. 3 niggles: The exaggerated back curve on the handle can irritate the pinkie (wear gloves or hang your pink over the edge), the plastic sheath is just for store display, and the hammer face has a forging seam that makes driving a round tent peg tricky (I filed it flat.) But there's really no other choice (the Fiskars is the same item) for less than $125 Hults Bruk Jonaker Hatchet . The "tactical/survival" hatchets cut from plate are too thin to drive a round tent peg. [edit] Estwing makes an inexpensive black nylon sheath that fits perfectly. Estwing #16 Sportsman's Axe - Camper's Hatchet Sheath - Black - Fits E24A, EB-25A, EO-25A, E6-25A & E24ASEA 4For the price, gets the job done. Does the job for the price. Feels quite solid and has a good heft from the axe head.Despite the hollow handle, I can get a decent swing.I did not like the slight burr from the molding process found just below the axe head along the handle (see photos). For my purposes, the included plastic holder is just too bulky for camping purposes.I made my own blade cord cover with shock cord and a nylon strip.**Update August 19 2017**I took the hatchet out to the beach.Took approximately 50 swings onto semi soft beachwood. Was able to make short order of the driftwood for a beachside fire.Noticed a slight dent along the middle top of the blade edge.30 minutes with a sharpening stone and the blade is back in working order. But I expected the blade to handle a short chopping job.Did not observe any knots during chopping. 3I love this axe It slices... it dices... it makes julienne fries!!! I keep this in the back of my jeep for trail maintenance and a camping axe. I love this axe! It lumber jacks through stuff like Paul Bunyan himself! Highly recommended! 5
