    Inexpensive way to check angles. The other way I've ... Inexpensive way to check angles. The other way I've found really effective is Stanley's 48" level that has one level that rotates...so you rotate it 'til it shows level, then read the dial to see what angle that is, relative to the earth's horizontal or vertical--useful for finding the pitch of a roof, for example. 4Works great for my son's math homework Needed something for my son for home for his math homework. We had one from a certain company with a mustache, and it was an utter piece of junk, so we wanted something more useful, not plastic.This looked like it would work, and was metal. So we gave it a try.Love that unlike the others we were using, the standard arched plastic ones, it's easy to draw the angle with a single placement of the protractor and a single movement of the pencil.The thumb screw tightens for people who need that to hold it steady while using it.I was worried the size would be a bit awkward, but it's proven to not be the case.Can't beat it for the price, best protractor I've ever had. 5Not accurate Mine was off by about 1 degree. I am taking a sheet metal class and all my projects were turning out terrible. It turns out I was doing everything correctly, but all my angles were wrong. :( 1Works for a lot more than Machinist Mark-up! I first stumbled across the General metal protractor while working as an engineer at a metals fabrication shop many years ago...and ended up buying one then. Over time, I found that there were not only actually two sizes of them offered (at the time), but that they worked JUST AS WELL for drafting (which we did, on paper, back then) as they did for working on metal with DyKem and a carbide scribe!I gave my larger protractor to my wife, for her arts-and-crafts stuff...and needed to replace it, so I bought this one...but if you want a PERMANENT protractor that is ACES when it comes to being tough, and helping with accurate mark-ups, you NEED this tool in your box! 5Use to measure chisel & plane blade edges Now I can get exact angles for edges instead of guessing while sharpening tools. I've also used this to find angle from my unmarked t-bevel, to transfer cut angles to the table saw. It checks correct to my squares and plastic angle gauges, so I believe it's accurate. It's the same gauge Paul Sellers used in one of his YouTube videos, so if it's good enough for him, it's primo for me. 5Pretty good protractor accurate for my uses I like the protractor so far. Mine doesn't appear to be off using what limited measuring equipment I have. I made two angled lines and measured them using a more expensive protractor (not Starrett) and set an angle on my 9x19 lathe and both we correct. They should be accurate enough for my uses. I think it is a plus mine was made in Taiwan I'd rather US/Germany/Japan but I'd doubt it would be the price it is. Should I break it, doubtful it's pretty well made, I'd get the same one. 4So Handy When Cutting Mitered Angels This tool is so useful. It solved my problem immediately. I saw this tool on a youtube video series called See Jane Drill and thought, why not, it's under $10. So glad I bought it. 5First one was a dud - replacement is accurate! Check against a square upon receipt! I ordered one of these to keep around the shop and the first one arrived with an inaccurate scale off by about 1 degree, reading 89 degrees when checked against a verified-accurate machinist's square. MAKE SURE YOU CHECK YOUR GAUGE AGAINST A MACHINIST SQUARE BEFORE USING IT FOR ANYTHING. Obviously when you're using this to transfer angles for replication or to create the inverse of an angle, where you won't be actually measuring the angle and are just using it as a transfer tool, then this becomes a non-issue but when using it to actually measure an angle it's frustrating. Needless to say, that unit gets one star. However I decided to give the manufacturer/Amazon another shot before leaving my review, and I contacted Amazon about the issue and a replacement was sent immediately, arriving 2 days later. They didn't request the original back so that one can still be used for just transferring angles, and I handed it off to a co-worker with the warning about the scale so he can use it for a transfer tool.The replacement is accurate! Note that this isn't a "precision scale," as the marking for reading the angle is itself is about 0.5mm wide and that presents wiggle-room in the potential for mis-reading the scale very slightly, but it gets you in the ballpark, and on the replacement it actually lands on 90 when measured against a machinist's square.It's a solid little tool, and very simple. Provided that the scale is marked accurately, there's really not much that can go wrong with this tool aside from being crushed/bent/destroyed through negligence or accident. It is low-tech and perfect for work where "good enough" certainly is; I'd advise against using it to design a space shuttle or something where the difference between 45 and 44 degrees might be a life-or-death situation, though I don't suspect folks doing such things are looking to pinch pennies on angle gauges. It was a bummer that the first one's scale wasn't precise but given how quickly and easily the issue was rectified with absolutely no fuss, I don't feel I can exactly fault the item for that sour first experience. I'd say that if you're in the market for an item like this and trying to keep the cost down, go ahead and take a shot if you're buying from a company that's easy-breezy with returns/replacements: in my experience, if you catch any accuracy issues quickly Amazon and/or General Tools will take good care of you. 4Seems to do the job Can't say whether it's all that precise, but if I'm using it to measure something and then replicate that angle in a cut, it really doesn't matter what the number is. Small enough to be convenient, large enough to do a measure, and does a great job of holding the measurement without slipping. 5The good part: it measures angles The good part: it measures angles. The bad: it's very difficult to use, because the knurled nut won't tighten without moving the pointer. And when it finally does, it loses its grip before you can read the angle. I am shopping for a better product. 1
