Customer Reviews

1/4" Skips Teeth! 1/4" skips teeth and is unusable. Look at the reviews for the 1/4" single tool on Amazon. This is a very common problem.Harbor frieght sells the same thing with a quick release on the back.I do like that the Gear Wrench handles are longer than Harbor Freight but what good is that when it jumps teeth?Garbage buy. 1Flawed, but pretty good. These do not have hollow shanks, so they won t slip over long studs. Also, the end that goes into the handle is the square end of a 1/4 drive tool. It is essentially backward of a normal drive tool so only these drivers will work with this handle, you can t grab any old bit and slip it in. The action is smooth and crisp, I haven t tried to break a nut loose with it. 3Simply the best for nut drivers I have purchased many tools in my life time but I must say this is without a doubt the best little tool set I have ever purchased. It is well made has all the sizes I could use and the ratchet handle is great. I don t need a nut driver real often but when I do, this little set is perfect. Heavy duty enough for any job. I could not be more pleased with this set. By the way it comes with a really nice case as well. Frankly, if I could give six stars I would. 5Best bang for the buck These are incredible ratchets. I have fallen in love with them since I discovered them over a year ago. First of all that last review is nonsense. Snap-On does offer a 2 degree swing ratchet but if you are talking value the gear wrench costs nothing and is a giveaway for something that works extremely well for breaking a bolt loose in tight spaces... Sure an old worn craftsman will have less resistance in the swing allowing you to ratchet until the weight of the wrench swings a nut around a bolt, put the bolt on by hand as far as you can anyways, if you can't reverse the nut by hand these ratchets will still click. The dual pawls is a great design and does the opposite of what the last guy claims, it handles a boatload of torque, I often use a pipe or box wrench to extend the ratchet on really stubborn bolts and it never breaks. There are two clicks seemingly closer together when traversing by hand but it is as advertised, 3-degrees before the next lock and is much more consistent in application than playing with it by hand. These are durable wrenches and nothing else feels better in the hand - it has the handle of a breaker bar. I throw them all over gravel and use them under fleet trucks every day, the finish is still in-tact and I wipe them off with a little gunk brake clean and they shine like new. I love them so much I'm going to buy a couple extra sets for my home use and garage use, including the combo packs with metric and standard sockets as well. If there was one ultimate improvement that could set these over the top above every other ratchet it would be to add a quick release button, but it's still not bad popping a socket off even when wet with the knurled sockets by gearwrench. 5Broken teeth on brand new ratchet, returned. I tested these out in a sears and was very impressed, but didn't think they were worth the $60 they were asking. Found them on amazon for $30 and was super happy. Unfortunately, I used the 1/4 today for the very first time and discovered that it's partially stripped. This is a brand new ratchet, not a return or anything, and the teeth are broken. Garbage. Never even used the 3/8 because I returned it.Great service from amazon as always, so at least the return isn't a hassle. 2Good but could be more Snap On like inside but then that costs more I bought the 3/8 ratchet for one specific use that I do many times a day. The torque I put into it is pretty high for this size ratchet; on the order of 22 to 30 ft/bl.I have used it every work day for a month and no problems. But that is not why I am reviewing. I came to say two things :1. I bought the set because the dif between the individual 3/8 and the set with the 1/4 was $4. I would be crazy to not get the set even though I didn't have a specific need for the 1/4.Ha, ha, ha . . . the first time I used the 1/4 it "broke". Meaning let go and slipped around and would not catch enough to even moderately tighten a fastener.2. I swear I read some where here, but can not find it now, that someone said they didn't like these ratchets as much as their old ones because they couldn't take them apart.Well.Since I had nothing to loose and wasn't going to try to get a replacement for my dead 1/4 I took mine apart. See my photo. One needs two picks similar to the ones in my photo. Two surprising things I found when I took it apart. I had put in like ten very small drops of super light Starrett instrument oil when I first got the ratchets. There was no trace of the oil; there was a hint of pasty grease but hardly any. Did the oil run back out while in my tool tray ? Possibly. Second it seems a few chips of dirt or black colored metal had been on the very shallow ratchet teeth in the body and had cause the ratchet pawl to not seat into the mating teeth. There was a corresponding mark on the pawl. I used one of the picks to dig the stuff out of the teeth, there was hardly any but enough to cause problems. I oiled the pawl and put some on the teeth in the body and put it back together.I would have liked to have seen some sort of seal to keep grit out (and lubricant in). I believe the Snap On regular ratchets have some seals. I have never had a need to take one of mine apart. I am not a big ratchet user. For the kind of pro work I do I use nut drivers with sockets, speeders and hinge joint "braker bars" almost exclusively except for the one task I bought the 3/8ths for as stated above.Anyway it is possible to take these ratchets apart and worth the trouble. My 1/4 is functioning as it should again.UPDATE : 7-26-15 I've had these over a year now, daily use on the 3/8 drive ratchet, and going strong. Not a hint of a problem.Over all I really like my Gear Wrench ratchets and other Gear Wrenches. Do you realize they make really large open/box Gear Wrenches ? I have a 36 mm that has revolutionized one of my regular operations. BRILLIANT ! ! 4Love these I dragged my feet for a long time before buying these ratchets. I already had flex heads and straight ratchets so did I need another tool in the box? I always want more but need is hard to justify. I am an avid weekend warrior who usually spend my weekends working on at least one vehicle so I can t speak for professional use, but would recommend to anyone. I often start using it as a nut driver than switch it to a ratchet once it starts getting tight. My only complaint is the head is larger than a traditional ratchet so it doesn t always fit. When it fits it has quickly become my go to ratchet on both 3/8 and 1/4 drives. 5Drive Some Nuts and Bolts Another Gear Wrench tool for the toolbox. For the money, Gear Wrench offers some high-grade tools. I've pretty much stated this in other reviews of the brand. I have a set of original ratcheting box wrenches from them that started out being used in a shop and are now in a shadetree role. They're around 20 years old and still going.Anyway, overall I like this set. It saves space by not having the drivers individually handled, and the case is decent. However, there are a couple of design flaws. The first is the handle. It's just a little too short for my meat hooks. It's not a deal breaker, but I hit the ratcheting direction thing just about every time I use this. It's super annoying when you're going to town on a bolt and all of a sudden nothing is happening because I've inadvertently hit the ring that changes the ratcheting direction. Speaking of that thing, it looks like it's backwards. There are arrows on the handle and they seem backwards from what they should be. Correct me if I'm wrong.Like I said, overall it's a good tool to have and use, and if Gear Wrench would fix these two problems, it'd be perfect. 4Works great. Great set, it s actually cheaper right now to buy this full set than just the SAE set that I wanted, as I already own the metric set. I m an industrial mechanic and use these regularly, so far I haven t run into any problems. The only thing that I dislike is that both sets are not color coded, and occasionally I slip the ratchet selector over because of the small handle. The case is of decent quality as well. 4Excellent Product at an Excellent Value! Excellent value, great quality! I have a Snap-on screwdriver set and the ratcheting mechanism quality is pretty similar. This comes in a very nice case - not the blow-molded, cheap ones - I mean a nice (plastic) case with a metal 4"x1.5" Gearwrench emblem and two buckles. I must say I'm very satisfied with the purchase. The length is appropriate, approximately 5-6.5" per nut driver. Standard inserts are nicely color coded, metric are all black, but the engraving is pretty nice and clearly visible. (small, but then again, how big can it be considering a 1/4" bit) One thing - I wish that Gearwrench would included an ON/OFF indicator on the ratcheting mechanism switch, kinda like Snap-on does (smae thing with the screwdriver set). You won't be disappointed with this set, and after this purchase, and the screwdriver set, I'm seriously considering going with Gearwrench for most items such as these. The price and quality just can't be beat. :) 5
