Customer Reviews

Fine product at reasonable cost, with one usability problemPros: works fine, nice and compact (smaller than many similar devices), low costCon: The label listing the various light combinations and their associated status condition is lacking in contrast. In all but the brightest light and closest scrutiny, the white dots (signifying *OFF*) are indistinguishable from the yellow dots (signifying *ON*).The two photos attached to this review show the Gardner Bender tester (the product being reviewed) and a similar product with a much more readable 'status table'. Maybe I'm picky, but I think you should be able to decipher the tester's results display quickly and unambiguously.3Crap. Old eyes with contacts can't read descriptions on it and the colors used are bad. AVOID.You get what you pay for. This thing is horrible. The light colors are terible and don't jive well with the ones described next to text on the unit. The text is almost unreadable. I have many others like these that are readable, colorful and useful. It can be done. These folks didn't try. AVOID.1Doesn't hold up with daily useI have literal owned over a dozen of these. They work great, are easy to read, and most importantly are the easiest I found that insert into the TR (tamper resistant) outlets. I am a home inspector so I use this on a daily basis, so over 100 times a day 5 days a week for work. They last anywhere between 2-6 months at most. They are cheap enough but carry several in my bag since I never know when it will fail. So good for the homeowner but not so good for professional daily use.3arrived with middle light brokenhad to use another one to test and revealed that I did NOT have an open neutral but that this piece of junk was broken!1Poorly done legend of what readings mean Works good and indications are accurate. My only complaint is the legend (key) of what the lights mean printed on the device cannot be read. The little ovals indicating on/off combinations are impossible to see. You cannot tell if the little oval is indicating on or off unless in bright light with the aid of magnification. 3Simple need, simple solutionThis tester works great. As mentioned in a previous review, it is a little difficult to differentiate between the white and yellow markings on the label, but it isn't too difficult if you are in adequate lighting. The GFCI testing ability also is a nice addition. As a clarification, this is a normal outlet tester that can be used on non-GFCI outlets, but it also has an extra button that adds the ability to test if the GFCI trips when it is supposed to.As one who knows little about electric, this helped me when updated an outside plug with a better weatherproof box. I wanted to make sure the outlet was wired correctly since some other lines in our house aren't. I also wanted to test the GFCI tripping. This tool worked great!Hope this was helpful. If you have any questions or need any clarification, feel free to leave a comment.5Wasted time and a purchase!!!Couldn't fit in any outlets. While trying to wiggle and pry this wire tester in a outlet, the outlet cracked. Do not recommend this for anyone.1Somewhat disappointingFirst of all, it works. There are however two problems, one worse than the other:1) The end of the plug was blunt, not tapered. Consequently it did could not be pushed into the new (probably stiffer) outlets I was trying to test. It would push into older outlets that had been loosened up a bit through use, but there was no reason to test older outlets. To get this to work, I had to put an extension cord into the outlet to be tested, then put the meter into the well-used extension cord. I'll probably taper the plug later with a file.2) The yellow/white coding on the label is difficult to read. As someone mentioned earlier, that's easy to fix with a marker, but is a design flaw that could easily be corrected by the manufacturer.Except for those two problems, it worked fine. I didn't have any problem with bleed-through on the lights, and so the indicator was easy to read.3Doesn't work with Tamper Resistant outlets Works great when it can actually get plugged in. I upgraded an outlet to a tamper resistant (TR) GFCI outlet, and it wouldn't open the shutters. I'll have to try using it connected first to a 3 prong male/female extension cord that will actually go into the outlet.(Purchased Aug 2017) 4Difficult to discern lighting pattern. Very disappointed. The indicator lights on this are extremely difficult to differentiate which are lit up. It is so hard to tell if the right light is on or if it is bleed over from the middle. This basically makes this useless unless you have a known outlet that you can plug into to compare. If only they had built it with better separation between the lights, they wouldn't bleed over so much. I have up on this and bought the Klein Tools RT200. The only good thing about this unit is the gfci and the label is easy to read.1PerfectLove the size, the color (red), ease of use. Easily test any power socket. Talk about plug and play... lol This tester costso little and provides so much confidence knowing that my home is wired correctly, and that GFCI outlets trip correctly.Quality is top notch as well. Would buy again. Very happy with this tester. Add on item for shipping -still arrived fast - 2 days.5a quick and easy fix -- just take a black marker and black ...The unit works well and appears to be well-made. But I deducted one star because, as other reviewers have reported, the label does not clearly distinguish between "on" (yellow) and "off" (white) indicators. Indeed, when I first used the unit, I thought it was not working correctly. There is, however, a quick and easy fix -- just take a black marker and black out the "off" (white) indicators on the label. After doing so, the unit is a good addition to my toolbox.4Yellow dots are invisible (if you are over 50?) With my reading glasses, I cannot read what the little chart says about the meaning of the lights. The yellow dots are not as clear as in the photo of this product on Amazon. They are not clear at all.Other than that, it seems like a quality tool. It is too bad it is almost unusable for me. I am very surprised that other reviewers did not have this same problem. My eyes are not great, but they are not terrible. My wife cannot read the dots in strong light either. I wonder if the yellow printing on my tester is different than what others have received? If GB had used orange, (the color of the lights), I think the chart would be much easier to read. 1Works great This outlet tester works great. Not only does it test regular outlets it also test GFI outlets. We purchased a house and I figured why not tested each outlet. I found one of the outlets had no ground so I took it apart to take a look and found that the original owner of the house added that outlet and used no code wire that does not have a ground. So I had to fix it. Thankfully this tool found it for me. 5
