Customer Reviews

This is a larger blanket than what is commonly found in local stores. Nice and BIG! Plenty of room to cover from bottom to top on our new electric hot water tank. We had problems finding a blanket to cover the full circumference of our 23" diameter tank. This jacket has room to spare. A popular opinion as that "modern tanks don't need external insulation jackets". If this is the case, then WHY is the inside of this installed blanket so noticeably warm to the touch? I'm very glad that this Larger blanket was available on Amazon. 5Perfect fit for standard 50 gallon home water heater tank This seemed like a great value for what looked like a good R value to add to a less effiicient water heater tank. Ours is the State Select model, with a rather low R value and poor Energy Efficiency ratings. Ours is natural gas, so I researched and saw that I needed to be careful to allow adequate aeration around the pipings etc. Fortunately ours is vented via ducts that you can see (see crinkly aluminum flue exiting top). Our tank measured a bit over 75" diameter via tape measure, roughly measured. So we got this 3" x 60" x 90" R10 one to ensure good coverage with some overlap. This one fit the bill for our tank perfectly. It came with 2 long pieces of super wide, sticky aluminum tape. I used gaffer's tape to secure onto the tank (so that later on I could remove it from tank easier than duct tape if I had to), then used the included aluminum tape to secure the main seams. I had to cut around my water exhaust spigot at bottom, the high-pressure vent and pvc pipe from top, and of course the natural gas manifold with controls near center bottom. I am a rank amateur, so as you can see I did a really crappily messy job of it, but with my aging back, and IDGAF attitude, this was as much effort I was willing to put into it. I had some extra material after I cut around my bottom controls to add some extra insulation to the top of the tank as you can see, while being careful to avoid interfering with any of the pipes entering and exiting up top.I hope to add to this review in about 1 year from today, to give you some idea of if any monetary savings could be gleaned from our natural gas or water heating bill over a year of use compared to our data from the previous year when our tank went naked. See you then Amazon. 5barely fits This blanket barely wraps around an electric 40 gallon water heater. Yes , I installed it in the correct direction (48" high, 75" around). I had to pull reaaaaal tight to get the blanket to make a complete circumference. The tape included is pretty good but they should include 30 % more tape to acount for securing all the edges, including those cut areas for access to controls, valves, etc. The manufacturer should add another 12" in length and another 24" in height to account for covering the top and the fact that most tanks are 60+ " in height. Either that or start offering blanket kits based on actual height and diameters. One size does not fit all. If you had a 50, 80, or 120 gallon tank, there is no way this product would do the job by itself. 2Not as described. Very disappointed. NOT as described - looks like it was used - IT IS not 48 INCHES WIDE IT IS 22 INCHES. The dimensions are 4 inches x 22 inches x 72 inches. It is NOT double-sided foil. Very disappointed. 1Thick and real! This is real insulation. Thick and as advertised. Don't buy the phony bubble wrap stuff. It may take two fo these for big water heaters but is worth it. Get some extra tape to seal the seams. You will not regret buying this. 5An inexpensive way to conserve energy; pays for itself quickly Upon installing this water heater jacket on my 40-gallon tank, my use of electricity decreased by between 3 and 5% in each of the next 6 months (compared to my energy usage the year before). Now, that's not exactly the equivalent of a scientific study. I don't have equivalent measurements of outside temperature in those months, and I've probably replaced one or two incandescent light bulbs with CFL equivalents during that timeframe. My point is that you shouldn't expect a miraculous difference in your bill from one month to the next after you install this jacket. But if you take into account the low cost of the jacket, mine probably paid for itself within the first year. Some other reviewers note that installation was a bit of a pain. It's true that the instructions that came with the jacket aren't exactly extensive. If you do a few things to prepare beforehand, installation will go a lot easier. First, have another set of hands available, as this goes much more smoothly with a second set of hands to hold the jacket while the other person is taping/cutting. Speaking of which, have a roll of duct tape with you, because there's some tape included with this purchase, but probably not enough. You'll also need a utility knife on-hand, because you will need to cut access spots for pipes, wires, and the heating elements. Finally, make sure you measure everything twice before cutting -- and leave a couple of inches for overlap.PS: While you're at it, you should make sure to insulate your hot water pipes, too. 5Difficult to install, but works well. It's intended to fit a lot of different brands with various dimensions, which means it's going to be difficult to install. However, it seems to keep the heat inside the tank, rather than letting it out. I bought this more because my basement was getting hot in the summer (no AC) and I wanted to reduce all sources of heat. I used some of the extra to insulate the flue lines; I didn't quite have enough for that, but it makes a significant difference in my utility room. 4Just what it says! Great Perfect size for my 40gal gas hw heater. I had purchased a different one and returned it bc it was too small- this fit great, the tape was plentiful and did the trick. Buy with confidence. 5Ordered same product twice and received different quality items. This is the second one that I ordered since the first one did not wrap all of the way around my hot water tank. The first one was made with a quality wrap and thick insulation. The second one arrived with a cheap wrap, thin insulation, and the insulation as falling apart. Not happy. Not the same product that I purchased the first time. The wrap with darker insulation is a better quality. 1Barely fits 40 gallon (fits with some muscle) So I've just done install. You'll need serious fiberglass protection from this. Serious gloves and maybe use full face respirator if you have one.If you pull the long end together it just barely "fit" using tape but wasn't easy. Also be careful to clean up fiberglass scraps. I used a few swiffers and threw out gloves. I used full face respirator. I still got some fiberglass around wrists irritating me.Anything the inside contacts will pick up a lot of fiberglass including pressure relief valve downspout or anything else. 5
