Customer Reviews

Sturdy but limited angles for DSLR I got this specifically to use my dslr on a mount. The problem is that the angles block the camera from sitting above the mount arm, so you have to hang it inverted and adjust the video in post production. My camera, fortunately, flips the image on the viewfinder, but because it is lower than desired, there is an unflattering, upward angle of me in the driver's seat. To be clear, if I try to set the camera up right side up, there is not enough clearance because of the angle of the windshield. The supporting arm for the third suction cup blocks the camera. If I try to set it up with the third cup down, the ball joint can't go all the way vertical. 4Suction power BUT...... Ok so I read tons of reviews about this item but couldn't find what I was looking for so I took a leap of faith. Everyone here is talking about mounting this from a dashboard, car, side of the wall but NO ONE, gave a scenario of using this upside. I'm here to answer your question. Yes... This has enough suction power to support whatever you throw at it (assuming it's under 5lbs) hanging upside down. It really sucks! Here's the problem. Take note that this DOES NOT suck to any surface! This won't suck to your apartment wall made off dry wall, plaster, etc. It won't suck to the ceiling if it's sement or concrete. It's best for wood, metal, steel, marble, etc. What I did was just glue a piece of metal to the wall and put the suction on it. When it sucks, it SUCKS! 4Only suctions to glass so doesn't work in a car!!! Too late to return. Waste of money! I have never posted a negative review, but the fact that I purchased this for a family member to use in their car and then they attempted to use it but it wouldn't stay mounted by suction really was frustrating. What was even more frustrating was the fact that I have it complete in its original package and I can't return it. This item is a total waste of money and there are better products that actually do work. If you want to suction it to a window that might be fine, but it's definitely not ideal. Usually I am able to return products that don't work, but the time it took to try it and get it back from the family member that I bought it for, didn't give me enough time to return it. Product might work in other situations, but not a vehicle. 1Sticks super-firmly to windshields like 3M tape (but removable) I bought this for a far more mundane task than you guys: Securely mounting my very light weight humble dash cam inside my windshield. The suction cup that came with the dash cam kept falling off and each time I touched the dash cam the mounting bracket shifted so I'd have to reposition the camera. Not with this mounting bracket. As I learned later (guys read instructions afterwards), removing the suction cup is almost impossible unless you have access to the tab. I didn't, so I had to use a thin tapered plastic utensil to pry the suction cup off of the windshield. The directions state to position the tab downwards for easier access but I couldn't see how that could be done for the interior windshield. The dash cam is now rock solid firmly attached to the windshield and to the camera so I can now touch the buttons on the camera without moving the camera's orientation.I did buy another Delkin Fat Gecko Mount DDMOUNT-STEALTH for the rear dash cam since that suction cup falls off when the temperature of the car's interior goes into the triple digits and the stock suction cup mount is also awful.Too bad that Delkin doesn't list the usable temperature range of the suction cup. I took a chance and if they fall off in the next week or two when it gets scorching hot, they're going back.Even though the suction cup is way bigger than the stock 5.5cm suction cup that came with the dash can, I was able to position the camera closer to the center of the windshield for a slightly better perspective.UPDATE 8/30/17We finally received some blistering heat and sun weather. The interior of the vehicle was as hot as an oven. The suction cups didn't fall off.I'm very pleased with this suction cup and solid mounting bracket. 5Fantastic Mount I've been using GoPro cameras professionally since they were first introduced. I have several GoPro brand suction mounts, and they work great. I've never had any problems with them at all. I have one that is at least tens years old and it still works perfect. Now on to the Fat Gecko mount - It is equally as good in build quality to the GoPro unit. However, the Fat Gecko mount with the ball-joint is fantastic! I have three other ball-joint mounts that go with GoPro mounts but the Fat Gecko ball-joint is far better and very strong. As a testament to the Fat Gecko mount, I use these to shoot still and video for one of my clients with a GoPro Hero5 Black on large industrial grade street sweepers. These street sweepers are big and create a lot of vibration, as you might imagine. The Fat Gecko mount stays were I put it and you can easily orient the camera where you need to point it. Again - the ball joint on the Fat Gecko mount is fantastic as is the overall quality. I would highly recommend this mount to anyone that requires a strong and stable mount. I've also used these on drag cars and a variety of motorsports vehicles with zero issues at high speeds and high vibration levels. 5Wow, this thing is worth the money! Ok, everyone wants the cheapest thing they can get right? Well, I know camera mounts, especially using it on vehicles that are going over bumps, taking 100+mph winds, etc needs to be good. I opted for this mount and I'm so glad I did. I've used a lot of mounts over the years and this is by far the most solid suction cup mount I've ever used. I love all the versatility. You can adjust the 2 suction cups angle for curved/slanted surface mounting, and then the dual joints let you play with the mounts arm in ways you never though possible. This is a SERIOUSLY stiff mount too. Solid metal/plastic construction does not feel cheap. I'm so glad I spent the extra cash for this mount, really worth it. 5Best mount for in car Vlogs Best mount I've used so far. I stick to my windshield for Vlogging in my car. Pricey but worth it, I had a cheaper mount before and was very shaky. YouTube Channel JD JoyrideTV 5Durability and Service I bought our first Fat Gecko in 2012, after 5 years of service and still going we decided we needed one for our other Kayak as well. The Fat Gecko has allowed us to take many on the water movies over the years, and was always rock solid on its mounting. Shortly after buying the second unit while on a river trip we lost half of the knuckle. I looked all over trying to find a new knuckle that I could buy. Finally in desperation I emailed Delkin Products telling them the story and asking where I could buy a new knuckle. They emailed back within a day asking if this was the correct mailing address on my email salutation, and if so they would mail one right out at no charge. The part arrived a few days later and even included the ball. We have always been thrilled with the quality of the product, but this was over the top for service in my mind! We have used this on our truck for filming and on our kayaks with never a problem, and great service to boot. 5Very durable I bought this camera mount three years ago for use with my DSLR but to be honest I hardly ever used it until this year. I was always super paranoid about using it on the outside of a moving car with my DSLR, even after using it many times mounting it on the inside of a car (it never fell off or anything). Recently I mounted a GoPro onto the windshield of a Jeep and took it offroading. After 45 minutes or so of intense bumping and going over rough terrain, rocks and hills, this thing didn't budge! Make sure when you mount it the surface is clean and the suction cups aren't on top of any dirt, mud or other road junk. Also make sure it's not on top of any stickers or decals. I've found that the best way to mount it is to first loosen the knobs that control the angle for the suction cups, then once suctioned down, tighten those knobs. This thing is great and I don't regret getting one with three suction cups at all. I actually think the two suction cup model like this one gives you better flexibility and mounting options, especially when using a smaller/lighter camera (like a GoPro). After three years, this offroading test was the definitive test for me. I also left it on the windshield of the Jeep as we made our way back into town (make sure it's legal to mount a camera on the outside of a vehicle in your town/city/state). After this test I no longer have any worries of mounting this on the exterior of a moving vehicle with a small camera.Things to keep in mind: a GoPro in the waterproof case is nearly indestructible. Look up on YouTube the video of a skydiver accidentally dropping one out of a plane. It lands in a pig pen on a farm and is totally still functional (a pig actually tries to eat it - unsuccessfully, I might add). So even in a worst case scenario, the mount falls off the vehicle in some way, your GoPro will likely be fine.Even though I bought this originally to use with my DSLR I still have some reservations about mounting a DSLR on the exterior of a moving vehicle, simply due to the added weight. To be honest, even though this mount can support a DSLR, I think the use of an action cam like a GoPro is better anyway. I believe this simply because with a DSLR recording video you'll have no way of manually adjusting your camera settings; something you'll often need to do as the setting and lighting changes. With something like a GoPro the auto settings will adjust things accordingly (not perfectly, and I'm definitely a fan of shooting in all manual mode normally, but it's good enough). Of course this will depend on your specific needs, and I'm sure using one with a DSLR will probably turn out just fine.I would certainly buy this product again. And if I get additional GoPros then I definitely will so I can mount cameras all over the interior and exterior of a moving vehicle, instead of having to shoot things multiple times for each mounting position. 5Stays put--just wish it had more accessories Worked great stuck to the glass wall on a cruise ship for a week at sea (to make a time lapse using a Brinno TLC200Pro camera). Only complaint is accessories... since the ball is an odd size, none of the other "ball and clamp" type mount accessories (not naming the male mountain goat brand) work with it.. natively... Knowing I was going to have to deal with a railing, and not risking mounting on the outside side of the glass, I ended up getting a "-20 Female Threaded Hex Hole with 1-Inch Ball, then using the 1" accessories I already had (including a 1" ball base with "-20 stud) to turn the corner and mount the camera.I also threaded a PVC coated safety wire through the body of the frame and around the railing--just in case (wasn't necessary--had to pry the suction-cups off the glass when I removed the rig...).Lack of a 5th star was due to lack of accessories/direct compatibility with the wealth of 1" ball mounting systems. But it was a lot less expensive, and the adaptations didn't come close to making the other one worthwhile. 4
