Customer Reviews

Stone is Not Flat I bought this stone with a Fine stone. Neither were flat. I have returned both. Beware, and double check with a straightedge upon receiving the stone, especially lengthwise and from corner to corner. Look for light beneath the straightedge. 1Overall an EXCELLENT diamond plate once broken in after a few hundred strokes of use. The EZE-LAP 81SF coarse diamond plate is a nice size, very very flat, and after a short break in period cuts very efficiently. I have seen other reviews on amazon complain that they had problems the first time they used the stone. I can see how this would happen if the user did not read the package and assumed the stone was ready to go. The package clearly states that the final step in the manufacturing process leaves a rough surface on the plate that will wear off with the first few uses. Knowing this I started with a very old cruddy wood chisel that was not important to me, and the first few strokes were really rough (bumpy) and left some uneven scratch marks in the chisel. After a few hundred strokes, the chisel was more of a club/pry-bar than a cutting tool when I started, the surface got smoother, and easier to stroke the chisel across. All the while the diamond plate actually started cutting faster and smoother. I also have the same basic plate in the Course and Fine grits and all three plates start out the same way, very rough when brand new so take something non critical and use the plates a bit to break them in before sharpening anything special on them. 5EZE-LAP has become my diamond stone supplier I have used another brand of diamond stone for years. I recently set up a woodworking shop and by chance ordered two stones from my long time supplier and one from EZE-LAP. A year later I've replaced all my diamond stones with EZE-LAP stones. They cost about the same but the quality and longevity seems to be superior. Over time they cut better longer. The 8X3 size is excellent for sharpening tools like chisels and plane irons. They're large enough to take care of everything from 1/4" chisels to axes and draw knives. Also their surface area and weight makes them reasonably stable on the bench. If they do slide in use I recommend putting down some non-slip shelf paper or buying some rubber feat. The Super Fine grade is excellent for honing a newly sharpened blade prior to polishing on a srtop. Your specific needs may call for a finer stone or not call for something this fine but for most tools and woodwork this product works very well. 5Sharpens to a polish-ready mirror surface I just got into sharpening my woodworking tools and Paul Sellers' sharpening videos convinced me to go with EZE-Lap diamond plates. (Be sure to check out this man's blog and YouTube videos--he is a woodworking wizard, yet remains so humble and down-to-earth.)I wanted to go with 3 grits as suggested by Sellers. He comments that the exact grits don't matter that much, and depending on which blog post you look at, you may find differing recommendations. In 2012 he recommended Coarse, Fine, and Super Fine, and in 2013 he recommended Coarse, Medium, and Super Fine. Although the latter recommendation is probably slightly more efficient, for my 3 grits I settled on Coarse, Fine, and Super Fine for a few reasons. First, I wanted to try out both the single-sided and double-sided stones so I could compare them. Second, I wanted my most-used stone to be the "best" one. I assumed the single-sided stone would be most likely to stay flat over time since the steel substrate is about twice as thick, and I wasn't sure if the abrasive surface on the double-sided stone was as large as that of the single-sided stone. Last, I considered the possibility that I might add more in-between grits later, and I didn't want to have two consecutive grits on my double-sided stones because it meant I would have to stop and flip the stones every time I went from the grit on one side to the grit on the other side. So I ended up buying EZE-LAP's double-sided Coarse/FIne stone and single-sided Super Fine stone. After a few hours' use flattening and sharpening over a couple weeks, I have to say that the EZE-LAP 81SF 3 by 8 Super Fine Diamond Stone is a great product. It still leaves some visible scratch marks, but it does give you a pretty decent mirror finish. I haven't picked up a leather strop yet so I haven't tried polishing away the Super Fine stone's scratch marks, but I've used my #4-1/2 plane since sharpening and the blade cuts much better now.Despite my overall positive impression, I do think it's worth pointing out that EZE-LAP's single-sided stones may not be any better than their double-sided stones. Here are my comparisons of the two types of stones:Feet vs. MatThe double-sided stone comes with a rubber mesh mat that keeps it from sliding around when sharpening, as long as you lubricate the stone with window cleaner. On the other hand, the single-sided stone's rubber feet don't hold it in place very well, so I just end up using the double-sided stone's mat. If you buy the single-sided stone, make sure you either make a holder to keep it in place, or get a rubber mesh mat to put it on.SizeDespite the plastic grips on the ends of the double-sided stone, the size of the abrasive surface is exactly the same.FlatnessI was originally concerned that the double-sided stone may not be as flat. However, after handling the stones, I'm not so worried any more. The steel on the double-sided stone is thick enough that I don't think it will be prone to warping, especially since both sides of steel seems very securely fixed to the plastic. If you have the extra money to spend on the single-sided stone and have other reasons to get it besides just flatness, then go for it. But if you're on a budget, I don't think you'll sacrifice any flatness by going with the double-sided stones.DurabilityAlthough I can't comment much on this since the stones are different grits and I haven't had them very long, I was concerned that the diamond plates on the double-sided stone may separate from the plastic part. Again, after handling them I'm no longer worried about this. As far as durability in use, it looks like the abrasive surface isn't any thicker on the single-sided stone, so I would expect the double-sided and single-sided stones of the same grit should last about the same amount of time.EZE-LAP vs. DMT and brandsI haven't used a DMT stone but I'm sure they're just as good. They actually have a better warranty, but they also cost more. DMT also doesn't offer as many varieties when it comes to the double-sided stones. Whereas you can get a double-sided EZE-Lap stone with a combination of any two different grits, DMT now only seems to offer consecutive, progressive grits (apparently other combinations were offered at one time but they seem to have been discontinued). Regardless, I certainly would stick with EZE-LAP or DMT over the cheaper brands because numerous professional woodworkers such as Christopher Schwarz and Paul Sellers have commented that the other brands just don't last.PriceEZE-LAP's single-sided Super Fine stone was the cheapest single-sided stone at around $35 so it was comparable in price to a double-sided stone. The double-sided Coarse/Fine stone that I bought was $55, but a single-sided coarse stone would have been $50, so in that case the double-sided stone was a no-brainer.ConclusionIn short, the double-sided stones generally do give you the most bang for the buck, but the EZE-LAP 81SF 3 by 8 Super Fine Diamond Stone remains a pretty good bargain as long as it doesn't go up in price. As far as I can tell you don't really sacrifice anything when choosing the double-sided stone over a single-sided stone. The benefits of this single-sided stone over its double-sided counterparts seem negligible, if there are any. If you travel a lot with your sharpening equipment, you might want to go with the double-sided stones or a combination similar to what I went with (double-sided for lower grits, plus this single-sided Super Fine stone). I'm happy with my purchase and think I got a bargain on this one at the price I paid, but if you're trying to decide between the single-sided stones and double-sided stones I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the double-sided stones. 4Great Stones Purchased the 81C, 81F, and 81SF for sharpening based on Paul Sellers recommendation from YouTube. Combined with a leather strop with polishing compound provides a blade edge very quickly that polishes up for an extremely sharp edge. One thing to note is that the diamonds come protected by a layer of metal cover plating. While this plating does sharpen it will take a little while to wear it off and expose the diamonds. Once the diamonds are exposed you will have a stone that will remove material quickly. 5Exceeded my expectations. I use this in conjunction with a couple other grit EZE Laps for sharpening planes and chisels for woodworking. After a break-in period, it has performed very well. The 3x8 size is large enough for even the widest plane irons and the rubber feet hold it securely. I usually use it wet for most sharpening, but have used it dry as well when needing to do a quick touch up. Works well either way, just using dry will require more frequent cleaning of the swarf. The super fine works really well for putting that final touch before stropping on paring chisels and smoothing planes. It also makes a good final step for mortising chisels and jack & jointer planes. The super fine did take longer to break in than my other EZE-Laps, but once done, has performed beyond expectations with how fast it cuts and the qualtiy of the surface it leavesThe biggest advantages have been no more flattening like was needed constantly with waterstones and much less messy than Arkansas oil stones. I can also stack all three of my EZE-Laps and store them in about the same amount of space as one waterstone used to take. 5Appears to be of good quality Received the Super Fine (approximately 1200 grit waterstone equivalent) a few weeks ago. After using this for some time now, its grit has settled in as advertised and it produces a surface finish similar to my 1000 grit waterstone. I've been experimenting with using just this stone followed by polishing on a leather strop for chisels, spokeshave and plane blades and knives. It has taken a bit of getting used to versus my waterstones but so far I'm pleased. 4Great for a woodworker. I use this as my last stone before going to a leatherstrop charged with green jewelers rouge. I have oneof these in 400, 800, 1200 grits. I use a shot of windowcleaner on each. Have them mounted in a wooden blockI can clamp on my bench. Use them for all my chisels andplane irons. Last step is a charged leather strop(rough side up).I believe it is equivalent to 13000. Very quick and dirty wayof getting mirror sharp edges. Paul Sellers has some good YouTubevideos on this technique. Sorry for all the details, all us woodworkerslike to compare sharpening notes. Ha! 4I purchased one of these a bit over a year ... I purchased one of these a bit over a year ago. It has a convex bow long ways, flat on the short sides. Never occurred to me that a diamond plate would be out of true, so I missed my return chance. Probably would go with a more reliable brand in the future, this one has been downgraded in use to axes. 2Badly bowed along it's length. I ordered this along with the coarse and fine plates. Upon receipt, I checked all three for flatness. Coarse and fine were both flat both laterally and longitudinally, but this stone was wildly bowed on the long axis (though flat across the breadth). attached photo shows the light between ruler and plate at one end. Note it was hard to hold up the ruler, plate, and camera all at once, so the camera angle does not show how truly bad the warping was, but you can see even here how unacceptably curved it is. Amazon approved the return immediately, and now i am waiting to receive the replacement. If it's flat, i'll be happy, but if it's another warped one, i'm sending all three back and will try DMT.UPDATE: I receved the replacement plate, and it too was warped. I have returned all 3 ez laps and am going with DMT now. 1
