Customer Reviews

Run away... it's pure garbage. If you're looking for a $300 power cord then this is will blow your socks off. If you want it to use it as a dock then you'll be very disappointed. It never really worked correctly and I've tried just about everything to get it going.Running on a 2018 MacBook Pro.1. Doesn't recognize USBs (it worked intermittently for a short period but now 3 months in it's completely dead)2. Display Port caused my screen to flicker every 5 seconds. I ended up directly connecting my monitor to Mac via DP to USB3 and it works fine.3. Doesn't recognize the Ethernet cable plugged into the port4. It does power the Mac so I guess that's the only thing that is working.Only buy this piece of junk if you're a glutton for pain and punching yourself in the face is not enough. It's an amazingly awful experience. 1Yes, it does work with older macbooks with the Thunderbolt 2 adapter!I wasn't sure if it would work with my older MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) that had Thunderbolt 2 ports, so I purchased both this and the Elgato Thunderbolt 2 dock figuring I'd return one depending on which one worked. This one arrived first and I just finished setting it up. I've got it connected to my MacBook using an Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter and an Apple Thunderbolt cable (0.5 m). So far it's working with a full-size USB mechanical keyboard plugged into the dock, headphones plugged in to the front of the dock (make sure to update your sound preferences to select the "USB audio CODEC" source, otherwise your volume controls won't work), a Samsung C34J791 34-inch QHD Ultrawide Curved Monitor with Thunderbolt 3, and a webcam plugged into one of the USB ports on the monitor. The only thing this dock won't do in this configuration is power the laptop since the TB2 ports don't support that. 5Dead after 9 months but 2 year warrantyI have one of the LG 5K displays for my MacBook Pro and I regularly have to swap between a newer and older MacBook. This device worked great as a way to more easily swap cables between the two as I went between laptops. Unfortunately, after nine months it just stopped working. It will still deliver power, but that's about it.I've reached out to their customer service and apparently it has a two year warranty. So while I'm not thrilled that I have a plastic brick at the moment, their tech support seems to be decent and I'll follow-up on this depending on how the replacement goes. 3Constantly failsI was really excited to finally have a single plug solution. I have two monitors, ethernet and a USB keyboard and Mouse connected to my MacBook Pro. This device appeared to solve that problem. However, it quickly started to fail. I tried to get it to work for several months and now it just sits on the floor in the closet. I spent a lot of money for this device for it to be so useless. I wouldn't recommend. The issue started with monitors just going black and the keyboard would stop working. I'd unplug everything and plug it back in and things would mostly just work again. I dealt with this issue for several months. Then it started failing when the computer would wake from sleep. So now I'm constantly unplugging and plugging in this device to reset it to work.Makes me feel like it's not safe to use and could cause internal problems on my MacBook. So now it have a paperweight.Do not purchase. 2Best of the TB3 DocksI carefully researched TB3 docks before buying the Elgato product (other choices were Belkin, OWC, Caldigit and Kensington). On paper all these products all appear similar, but I advise all buyers of a dock to read reviews carefully as some docks seem to have issues with display compatibility and ethernet connectivity.Overall, I'm very pleased with my choice. I am using the Elgato with my 2017 15" MacBook Pro, and have this connected (via the dock) to my 21:9 LG monitor (display port), wired GB Ethernet, and several USB peripherals, including scanners, hard disk drives and a BluRay reader. All works flawlessly, with no glitches whatsoever. The MBP, with it's high power needs, charges with no problems even under heavy load, and it's rather fun being able to dock/undock everything with a single TB3 cable. Goodbye cable clutter! My only real issue is the terse documentation supplied (which doesn't even show which port does what), and the use of tiny dark gray labels on a black background to label the front and back ports (really annoying for the audio in/out on the front). Clearly everyone at Elgato has 20/20 vision in bright rooms, because the labels are totally invisible to my eyes. Also, the audio output port on the front, while functional, feels cheap and I'm concerned about how long it will last. 4Expensive and has issues with MacI'm using this with my MacBook and while most of it works. the external monitor constantly flickers and I have ot take the usb-c cable out constantly to get the external monitor to reconnect the App is just to dock and undock and even with that the dock seems too pricy for all its issues 3Doesn't work with 2 external monitors - 2018 MacBook Pro 15"I purchased this dock primarily so I can connect my 2 external 2k monitors more easily through a thunderbolt 3 plug. Well it doesn't work most of the time. One monitor is connected to the DisplayPort and this always works. The second monitor that is connected to the Thunderbolt 3 connector rarely works. It'll work 1 out of 5 times. 4 of the 5 times the monitor gets no signal. Because of this, I just connect my 2nd external monitor directly to the MacBook. Pretty much useless for what I was looking to use it for.I would not recommend this product and would advise in looking at an alternative product. Something I wish I would have done. 1Probably I Got A Lemon Lot But...I bought this as a home office dock for my MacBook Pro 15-in late 2017. It worked great for about 6 months, then suddenly one morning it intermittently disconnected - monitor will call blank, my back disk will go offline. I tried to see if this is an overheating issue, added Fan control to run the fans at high speed, but that did not help. What happens to me is that if the CPU load goes high and graphics I/O goes high, it just stops supplying power and from either of the TB ports. If you run into intermittent connect/disconnect, first thing you should try is to connect them directly to your Mac if you can and run them for the same amount of time and similar workload. The TB cable has chips in them and that can go bad, I did do that as well.Since I am a developer and cannot afford a downtime, I bought another dock and able to plug that in right way and glad I did it because it does not exhibit the same problem and also I did hear from Elgato support today, but the replacement is out of stock and it will be 2-3 months out (wow, it's not out of stock here is it?)So if you are not in heavy development or video production workflow and need to rely on it, you may have to have a backup unit. 2Exactly what I wanted, but at a high priceI have been waiting patiently since I got my new MacBook Pro when it came out for a docking solution. I hate Dongles! I had done a lot of research on the options and the three main options all came out around the same time. I purchased the Belkin Thunderbolt 3 first and used it for a few days... but realized it was essentially the exact same thing as this and $50 more.I love this dock. The Thunderbolt Cable is a lot shorter than the Belkin one so if that matters to you take note. Other than that I love it... The dock just works when you plug it in. I will say that I do still have to use one dongle because I have 2 monitors... one uses DisplayPort and the other uses the usb c with a hdmi adapter. I hide the whole thing under my desk and love that there is just one cable from my computer. While I love the device and it is exactly what I wanted... I understand that 300 dollars to not have any dongles or cords is expensive... There are cheaper options out there if you are just looking for ports. I wanted charging and ports with one cable and I wanted full resolution on 2 monitors. 5Great dual monitor support for the 2017 MacBook ProI'm using this for my 15" 2017 MacBook Pro and it is great so far! I have two Asus 2k monitors hooked up, one using the displayport and the other using a usb-c to displayport cable. I then have my new Samsung T5 external SSD connected via USB in the back for my TimeMachine backups. The unit is smaller than I thought it would be. No weird sounds, no noises at all from the hub. Power brick is pretty large, but I guess that is expected since this powers the MacBook. It is really nice having all my devices connecting through just one single thunderbolt cable. My only complaint is that the provided thunderbolt cable is so short! Barely longer than the Apple Keyboard as a reference. For $300 you would think they could give you a cable that is a tad longer. 5
