Great introduction to solderingI bought this kit for my teenage son as his first soldering exercise. It is a great kit to get started with as it's very easy to assemble and has a good variety of different parts to try out. I especially liked the practice area with the extra holes and pads to practice on before actually working with the real components, giving him some confidence before moving on. Happily it worked on the first try!The packaging is minimal -- if you're giving this as a gift, you may want to take that into consideration. It's basically just a letter-sized zipper bag with a small booklet and loose parts.Speaking of booklet -- it came with a 5 or 6 page long 8.5x11 pamphlet giving detailed instructions, diagrams, and theory of operation. While the theory section could have been written better, overall it was very easy for him to follow and had some nice quiz sections on resistor values, etc to get him started. If you've never soldered before and want to give it a try, this is a great introduction. 5Frustrating, but very thorough and I learned a lot!The manual was thorough and very well written. It was not just a "stick R1 here" type diagram. The manual explained about reading resistor color bands, capacitor polarity (or lack of) and many other aspects. Plus, there was quite a bit about soldering setup, care of equipment and safety.Unfortunately, I found the circuit board to be very heat sensitive and the inner foil and glue separated from the board. There were a few times when I lifted the solder, and the copper "donut" surrounding the connection came along with the soldering iron. That taught me to turn the heat down on my soldering iron.On the bright side, by doing the shunt and cracked circuit-board exercises at the start of the instructions, it helped me fix the board failures and my soldering failures. (It also warned me that the board "melted" quickly.)In the end, my siren would have worked, but in fixing a foil/glue failure, I short-circuited a resistor, so instead of "wee-ooo" I just got a timid "eep" and a burning-hot transistor. However, I will salvage the parts or something. It was about learning to solder, not having a siren. This kit was not my first soldering project, so I probably wouldn't recommend it for children or tweens as a first project as might want a siren at the end of their hard work. I found the board very touchy for soldering. In the past, I have worked on smaller "Tiny Whoop" RC quadcopter PCB boards without issues. 4Great Team experience, Kit instruction material could be much better tho.PRO:My Grandson is 7 and he's never soldered before so I worked with him very closely initially to be sure he didn't get burned.. there was only one close call where the iron slipped out of his hand as he got careless pulling it out of the holder but thankfully he didn't get burned so I was very glad that close call was just another learning experience for him. As we built it I enjoyed teaching him about what the difference components do in the circuit, which are polarized and which are not, and what the proper sequence is for getting a good solder joint. We stared off learning about tinning the tip and taking care to pre-heat the pad and lead before applying solder to the card surface etc.. and it was a very good experience over all.. He was proud of his work as was I and it was a great team project.CON:There are several things that could be improved in the kit instructions tho.. for example where they show the LED's they don't mention that the longer lead of a new LED is the positive one, nor was that polarity marked as "+" on the silk screening on the card. What is on the card silkscreen is a circle with a flat edge. The instructions said the flat edge of the diode should go towards that flat side, Problem is the actual diodes in the kit have no flat edge so you were sorta left guessing if you didn't know that the longer lead is typically the positive one. I also found it odd there were two R4s and two R6s in the kit as well but suppose the second "R4A and R6A" resistors are to be substituted in later to change the frequency and demo de-soldering.Were not done building the kit so I may have more comments later, but overall I'm happy I got it, and am looking forward to doing more of these kits with my grandsons in the future. The next one in line is 6 years old and it's a little bit too early for him to try this I think. 4Good learning experience, but low quality solder pointsIt goes through a great deal of detail on what to do when soldering and walks through common connections and issues that you might run in to, and even includes a section just for practicing. For the learning experience, I give it 4 stars. On the other hand, the material quality was pretty poor overall, and the solder points had a tendency to melt off the board. This was made apparent during the teaching part, so I was expecting it and more careful while attaching the components, but I still managed to torch one of the pads for one of the capacitors (I would have turned my iron down, but I don't have a variable temp soldering iron; if I stick with this much longer, though, I have my eyes on an iron that would let me do just that). For material quality, I give it 2 stars. That issue notwithstanding, I probably would have wound up with a working siren, but I missed the two "jumpers" (just wires going through the board). By the time I noticed them, I'd already pulled the potentiator, timing chip, and speaker off to salvage for other projects down the road, so I didn't have a chance to try again. So, if you're considering this, for what you get for the price, I'd say it's very much worth it. If you have a variable temperature iron, set it about as low as you can while still hot enough to melt the solder, and be careful not to spend too much time on a part or over-work it. If you have your own lead-based solder, that will make this easier as it has a lower melting point and is generally easier to work with than lead-free solder. 3Good Learner's BoardThis is a good kit to learn how to solder with. On the one hand, it is cheap, and the reviews saying that pads will come off if you solder on this board are partially right - if you apply too much heat for too long, they will peel off. On the other, that is what this board was clearly designed for: as a basher board for you to break stuff while practicing, so that when you actually begin working on more expensive hardware, you've made all of your mistakes on this board. I burned off 4 or so practice pads, but by the time I got the prep routine down, I had no problem actually soldering the remaining electronics into a working circuit. Would definitely recommend for someone who is learning to solder, has book knowledge on how to do so, but needs practical experience. 5A great first project for folks who are just learning to solderI built this project after I'd already done a bit of (not very good) soldering and I wish I'd started with this project. The project includes the board, the components, well-written instructions, and some solder. Not included are the soldering iron and the 9V battery that you'll need to power the project. The instructions start you off with some basic soldering on an unused section on the board and after you've had a chance to do some soldering there (and get some of your mistakes out of the way!), you move on to soldering the actual components for the kit. All of the components of the kit are nicely spaced out which makes things even easier for the beginner. When completed, the kit will flash two LED's on and off and make a very annoying siren sound. As such it doesn't do anything terribly useful but it is a good feeling to have your recently acquired soldering skills result in something that actually works and does SOMETHING!There is a brief troubleshooting guide to be used if you finish the kit and it's not working right. I would have preferred this troubleshooting guide to be more extensive since this is a kit for rank beginners with little experience in troubleshooting circuits... if it were not for this, it would be a five star product. 4One thing I do wish it had was better instructions explaining the speaker and terminalsKeep in mind this is a soldering kit and not a "learn general electronics" kit. It walks you through the process of keeping your Iron clean, tinning, types of solder and how to apply to create solid connections. *Not shown in the pictures* on the back of the PCB is an area to practice different soldering points on a board, where the instructions drive you through areas of making jumper connections, circuit connections, close connections with no bridges, fixing bridges, purposely creating bridges and how the photo resist works. After that the instructions guide you onto how to properly insert each individual component without going over what is happening to the circuit. But this is a soldering guide, not so much an electronics guide. One thing I do wish it had was better instructions explaining the speaker and terminals.Oh and you can probably build this entire thing without opening up the instructions, each component is labeled with their spot on the PCB. 5Not so simple !After 4 tries I finally got the siren and flashing lights to work !! Each time I purchased another package wanting to start off from scratch... The 3rd package came with a broken board which I tried to fix with foil-repair tape, but that did not help. I could only get the siren to sound, with no flashing LED lights. On my first 2 tries I had the Resistors misplaced, so only the non-flashing LED lights came on but with no siren. On the fourth try I tried to follow the well written instructions to the 'T". This time I got the LED's to light and the siren to sound, but they were not intermittent ? The instructions said to check the C1, C2 capacitors which I did and noticed a weak connection. After I fixed the connection, the siren and flashing lights worked as they should. SUCCESS ! Being a beginner this was not an easy project. It seemed simple at first, but plenty of mistakes were made. The good thing is that I got a lot of practice soldering, something which I tried to avoid. Now that I'm feeling a little bit more confident, I'm ready to move on to other DYI more complicated projects. 5Very good intro to solderingI got into modding mechanical keyboards, but I never tried soldering before and I didn't want my first soldering attempt to be on my keyboard. This practice kit was a great practice/learning tool that I used before soldering LEDs to my keyboard. This practice kit comes with everything you need except for the soldering iron. There is a version of this product that has a soldering iron included for ~$7 more (at the time this review was written) Elenco AmeriKit Learn to Solder KitI borrowed my friend s Hakko FX888D Soldering Station (I highly recommend considering this soldering station if you re looking for one) and successfully assembled the kit in ~10 minutes. I had no trouble soldering 100+ solder joints on my keyboard right after assembling the kit.I highly recommend this product if you want to learn or teach someone how to solder.Feel free to leave questions/comments and I will try my best to answer them. 5Start You Kit Building Here! This is the best kit for beginners and even intermediate builders. I recommend it for even more experienced builders. There are areas on the board for different types of solder practice. You learn how to make complete solder pads; avoid bridging of solder pads, remove of excess solder by wicking and iron movement, joining pads, repair of cracked traces and adding wire connections. The kit is available with a good soldering iron & stand, diagonal cutters, and a tube of no-lead solder at extra cost. . Parts like resistors, capacitors, and diodes are packaged on a strip that identifies each by circuit designator, value, and color codes as applicable. This is extremely helpful in sorting out the little disk capacitors with tiny numbers on them. Assembly instructions have lots of pictures and guided part placement. The solder pads for components are a little larger than normal to make it easier for first timers to hit the pad. The manual is a good teaching aid for electronics and part identification. Elenco kits are terrific! 5
