Customer Reviews

My professor required this for a class of 20 so ... My professor required this for a class of 20 so I believe I can give a bulk review for the entire class. Firs of all the kit is cheaply made it reminds me of the kits my dad would buy me in elementary school when he taught me to solder. Most of the class was unable to get the buzzer to work for continuity maybe 4 of 10 worked. The gauge on mine was faulty I had to take it apart and make some adjustments to the spring that left it with a moving needle but no calibration. In the end we all got As and the professor will never require the class to do this project again. 1Piece of junk that's fun to build Don't buy this thinking you're going to get a quality multimeter, get it because you like to build stuff and then throw it in the back of the closet to collect dust. This may be an artifact of analog multimeters, but if you set up a voltage divider with moderate to high resistance and measure the voltage it will significantly underestimate it - even says so right in the manual. I wasted an hour trying to calibrate the voltage scale using a 10k pot in line with a 56k resistor. Don't get me started on the ohm meter - I still haven't gotten it to work. And the cheap piezo buzzer melts away when you try to tin it per the instructions. It does have the retro coolness factor though, being a big brick and all, but if only it worked reliably... 2great project My husband finished this in a couple of days and enjoyed every minute of the time he spent completing it. FYI, the Multimeter works just as intended. Thanks, it arrived I perfect condition and in good time. 5Very fine quality. All Elenco kits are good for the money. This is a great kit! All Elenco kits are good. Every item fits together perfectly. All the resistors are 1%, the circuit board solders like a first rate board always does, and the meter movement is very good, for the low price of this kit. This meter is certainly good enough for 97% of anything the hobbyist will do with it. I have two pricey DVMs and it still nice to have an analog meter on the bench. What is nice about this meter is that all the most common scales are used, and its nice to have a battery test meter that measures under load, without digging thru the junk box for a resistor. Now I have a meter I can use (DCV Null scales) for that DC bridge tester that I've always been meaning to make...I think. 5Works well, but check the sellers page! This is a very good product. Just look at the other analog or even digital options, and you'll see (probably already have by the time you make it this far down the list) that this one has more ranges of voltage, ohms, a buzzing continuity feature, and other readouts I honestly have no idea how to use.It is also very sensitive with instant deflection, unlike digital meters. Perfect for checking oxygen sensors or anything else where quickly changing readings are required. If you look at the sellers' page you'll see one company that sells assembled meters (and kits), and as Amazon often does, they simply lumped both products in this listing. The kit and meter are two different part numbers. Probably best to contact the seller through their own site after placing an order, though this seller contacted me to clear it up. 5I think it is potentially good product. My kit has a bad potentionmeter for ... It is a kit with detailed instruction. I think it is potentially good product. My kit has a bad potentionmeter for zeroing ohm range. The potentionmeter resistance jumps around. It also has a broken inductor for buzzer. The case quality is in par with $15 analog multimeter, details are not good. the face was not glued flat. Internal PCB has good quality, the probe is high quality if compared with most $15 meter. The range switch is only copper without any plating to prevent oxidation. The meter needle balance is 1-2% off if put in position other than horizontal' but can be trimmed to be perfect. The voltage can be adjusted to be within 1%, but some the ohm meter shows 10% mismatch from ideal value, bad zeroing could contribute to some excessive error.Overall, I had fun building one meter, extra imperfection provides more chances of trouble-shooting, maybe it is purposely designed that way?I fixed the broken inductor by carefully re-connect the fine wire winding for the inductor, on second thought maybe I broke it, so bend the inductor feet very carefully or it easily breaks. After fixing it, the buzzer works. For the potentionmeter, I re-assembled it and apply some contact cleaner, now it works. The linearity of the analog meter is not very good, the excessive error comes from the nonlinearity. it is about 2% near the center scale. it is still within 3% of specification though, but causes 20k resistor reads 19k. 3Cannot praise it too highly After ordering this kit I read a really disparaging review condemning everything abouit it, and as a result tried to cancel the order, however, as is often the case with Amazon, despite a rather lengthy initial delivery date THE ITEM HAD ALREADY BEEN DESPATCHED. I received the kit and was delighted to find that the reviewer must have either been a competitor or had received a different kit, as everything about it was the complete opposite to what the reviewer had described. I have not had an opportunity to assemble it yet but am eagerly looking forward to and would, unhesitatingly, recommend it to the most discerning prospective buyer. Robert, former electronic engineer, aged 92. 5Good accuracy except ohms The kit was fun to build and the instructions were excellent. The only problem I had assembling was the buzzer. When I tried to tin the buzzer as the instructions said it just melted. Had to turn the temperature of the iron to low and use a small tip. Touched the buzzer quick with the soldering iron then it worked without melting. Wish the instructions said that. The meter accuracy is within the 3 to 5% on all functions except the resistance. The resistance reads within 3% up to 10 on the dial on all ranges. Past 10 it reads from 4 to 10% higher than my Fluke 179. I take whatever the meter is reading and subtract one division on ohms scale if reading is above 10 from reading and then the accuracy is about 3% compared to my Fluke. The buzzer works but sounds wimpy. The pointer doesn't want to stay on 0. When changing ranges or moving meter it moves a little and have to readjust. When calibrating had to adjust pot all the way to the end of it's range to get .4 volts. The pot should be more in the middle of range. I guess it's not too bad for the price. Don't expect it to be as accurate as a digital meter. I bought it to test transistors and diodes for leakage and checking potentiometers. A digital meter doesn't read leakage unless it is very bad. 4A GOOD WAY TO KICK-START A HOBBY IN ELECTRONICS I bought this kit for a birthday present for a mentally disabled relative. He just told me that it all went together quite well and works and the readings closely match a digital multi-meter.If you are getting serious about electronics this is a good way to test your skills and interest level. Besides, you need a decent analog meter so why not kill two stirds with one bone?Thanx//(~_~)\\AU 4Kit The kit is very informative and the direction are so easy you do have to use math at all on series or parallel resister circuit installs. You just follow the pictures mainly. Also pay very close attention to the pot switch. It doesn't go on the resister side of the board.Other than that it pretty easy. Don't overload the solder and make sure you dial pas have no solder on them you good to go.I measured all the resisters before install and the margin of error is higher than the package says they are. I had 6-7% +\- on over half of them and the book said 1-2% +\-. so that is the really solid error I found with the kit. The other thing that I found was that my soldering iron had to be set to 3.5 out of 5 to lay the solder and it didn't stick to good. My suggestion to fix that is to wipe the board down really good with alcohol and flux all the pads.Good tool 4
