Customer Reviews

Edimax products work for me, and the price is right.Ok, I am not a network engineer, I have a HP 2600 with no wi-fi, so I bought this to put it on my wi-fi network. As I have the EDIMAX BR-6258n about a year ago, and am using it as an access point to cover a dead spot in my wi-fi network, and it works fine, can stream video on my wife's iPad, and my tablet it works. Speed is not was good as when I am close to my main wi-fi router. While this is in use with my printer I can not give speedtests for this item yet. I will buy another to make it an access point just to try, at this price, well why not.My speed test for my EDIMAX BR-6258n I get a range fo 15 to 20 Mbps down and all three access points give 6 Mbps up. The best download speed is my main router at 20 to 30 Mbps, the free one from T-mobile only give 2 to 6 Mbps down, which might be because it has a long cat5 run, ???. In any case with the three access points I have access throughout the house, and my HP 2600 always prints using this Edimax EW-7438RPn.It was easy to setup, just as was my first EDIMAX BR-6258n was. I like this one better as it is all in one unit, while my first on has a 5 volt power pack.It even fits in the electric socket without blocking the other plug : )I will update when I get the second one, as this is a N300 I expect it to be as fast if not much faster than the 150Mbps earlier model. As the earlier model gives me plenty of speed I do not think I will upgrade it, just leave what is working where it is.5Instructions were poor and I had to try it in a few ... It worked! Instructions were poor and I had to try it in a few places to get good reception. I researched others and discovered that almost all of them are this strength regardless of price so I opted for the less expensive model and it did the job. (I am only using it for my phone, so I have no idea how it performs for tablets or computers.) 4Strong signal & low profileI use this as a wi-fi access point in place of an old Linksys WAP54G that had quit working. It's much smaller, has a stronger signal & a higher throughput than the old one & reaches much further in the house. I would buy another one if my other extender ever fails. It was simple to configure and very intuitive. Nice product - low price.5WORKS! EXTENDER and WIRELESS PRINTINGI have bought 2 of these. I was a little concerned about using 2 in the same home but they are just what I needed. One is a wireless network extender and then I used the other one for a wired Ethernet printer. This was a very cheap way to make the Ethernet printer connect to the wireless network. Both have been working flawlessly for the last 2 months. I used the iPhone app to connect them to the network in less than 5 min. This extender has 2.5 and 5 GHz frequencies so it very versatile. I saw a lot of questions about it working with an Ethernet printer and my HP Laser All in One Printer is working like a champ, (scans, prints and faxes through the wireless network).5Had it up and running in about 5 minutesI think it took me longer to unpack the device from the box than it did to configure it. I used my laptop to do the setup as detailed in the instructions. A few clicks of the mouse and I had it up and running. I'm using this to allow me to connect an ethernet cable to my old TiVo that doesn't have wireless built-in.5Does not provide DHCP to all types of clients. Non-Standard product!I bought this to replace an older TP-Link but this model can't pass DHCP to a Cisco router interface. It does pass DHCP to a windows PC, but obviously has some non-standard software.. Useless to me, I put the ol TP-Link back in place and we are back operational.1Great product. I use it for my internet phone service, where I don't have Ethernet cable access. Works great, I just wish I could say the same for my phone service.Might be a little difficult to set up for the non-tech savvy. 5Good Deal, but Didn't Last Long (6 months) I bought this device in February '16 and by August '16 it became very unstable. I guess if it is only intended to last 6 months, then it was a good deal. I expected it to last longer though. I've purchased several products made by Edimax and was considering buying my next wireless router for 802.11ac from them. The key word there is "was". I will go with a Linksys or another vendor I've had success with. 2Works great.... ButThis did exactly what I wanted it to do. Allow me to plug in a non wifi internet radio to my wifi network. But getting there was not so easy. First of all, the instructions are very poorly written. The step where you set it up over the wifi network in not clear and will send you off into the wrong direction. I am not saying it is wrong, but misleading and one or two more sentences would make this so much easier to set up. I called Tech Support and was able to talk to someone right away. He spent 58 minutes on the phone with me, showed me where I was going wrong but it still would not work. Then we updated the firmware. and re did the setup and it worked like a champ. There are three different ways you can use this, like i mentioned about, I use this to connect a not wifi device to my wifi and it does a great job. ... So far. I will update is there is an issue.Update, This has worked flawlessly for over a month now and I bumped my review up to a 55For the money cannot go wrongI did an in depth test of 3 wifi to ethernet bridges. For testing I setup 3 beaglebone blacks with a cron task to run hourly the following script:root@bbb:/etc/cron.hourly# cat speed_script#!/bin/sh/usr/bin/speedtest-cli --simple >> /home/debian/speedtest.logecho "" >> /home/debian/speedtest.logInternet is gig fiber provided by an ASUS RT-N56UAfter a week here were the results (averaged values):Securifi AlmondPing(mS): 19.9Download(Mbit/s): 26.1Upload(Mbit/s): 20.2Edimax EW-7438RPn MiniPing(mS): 141.4Download(Mbit/s): 33.1Upload(Mbit/s): 43.5IOGEAR GWU627Ping(mS): 10.6Download(Mbit/s): 16.2Upload(Mbit/s): 11.84Ditch the Edimax Mini for a NetgearThis was an epic disaster. Two problems arose, the first and most serious was an inability to disable the WPS pin. As some of you may know, the pin can be cracked with little effort. I asked tech support if they could release a simple firmware update that might disable the PIN or WPS in it's entirety for those who wish it. They were very friendly, but politely declined my request. The next issue, which was more annoying than the aforementioned security problem, was the devices inability to maintain a reliable connection to my router for longer than a few minutes. I took every reasonable step in troubleshooting this problem and it just couldn't be fixed. In the end, the EdiMax mini went back in the box and was returned to amazon, no hassles. I went to Best Buy the next day and purchased a slightly more expensive Netgear repeater. It is the N300 WiFi Range Extender, and hasn't disconnected from the WiFi Router once. Plus, it allows me to disable the WPS pin. Finally, with the channel set to auto, none of the other networks in the neighborhood are interfering (up to 22 detectable). Both my router and extender seem to dominate channel six, kicking my neighbors off shortly after they switch to six. It appears the N300 WiFi Range Extender is available on amazon too. I'd highly recommend it. The web interface provides many more configuration options than the EdiMax as well...in addition to those already mentioned. Best regards.2Worked for adding WiFi to my HD HomerunNeeded to get my TV antenna up to the second floor for better reception and more channels. Got an HD Homerun to get those signals on my network, but it had no WiFi only wired Ethernet. Installed and configured the Edimax EW-7438RPn Mini New Version N300 in under 5 min, plugged in the HD Homerun and now have stable, live over the air TV accessible via PC. mobile, and Roku on my network. Have not needed to restart and have not had any interruption in 3 months continuous use.5Can't recommend. Broadcasts an SSID loud and clear, but connecting to it is borderline useless.Essentially, this wireless range extender works by emitting an SSID similar, but not identical to that of your existing wireless access point (i.e. the one you're trying to extend). So, if your home wireless network is called (has an SSID of) "FBI_Field_Team", the Edimax EW-7438RPn would take that signal, and then broadcast something called "FBI_Field_Team-X1", or something similar. (In other words, the device takes your current network name and creates a second network name by appending two or three characters to the original.)It's pretty easy to set up, and the new access point (in the example above, "FBI_Field_Team-X1") has the same password as the main access point , but that's where the convenience of this device ends; performance issues prevent this from being a really good device. More specifically, it broadcasts an SSID perfectly -all the time - meaning it always shows up in my list of available networks... BUT - and here's where the problem comes in - connecting to the SSID emitted by the Edimax EW-7438RPn often (at least 50% of the time) results in little or no data transfer. So, in actual use, I might connect to "FBI_Field_Team-X1" while it's broadcasting at full strength, well within its range, only to have pages fail to even load... and this happens at least every other time I use it.The only reason I haven't returned this thing yet is because I'm hoping there are some settings or something that I can tweak, but I haven't had time to mess with it.2
