Customer Reviews

GREAT Value! Great Material! WARNING!! - Edit I used this for a shoulder rig to mount my camera along with a handle, and it is PERFECT! I could definatly use this for many other rigs or even for macro photography! The material is great, and very sturdy. In other words, you can trust this with a DSLR without a doubt.I may purchase another one for my DIY Steadicam i made, as it would work great with that as well! The one and only problem, is that it took 3 weeks to ship, however, it came from China and spent most time in customs (i believe). But, it did say it would take another month, so it came earlier than estimated. Nevertheless, it is worth the wait to buy from Amazon, and worth the wait for the great product!EDIT: (8/20/12) I finally got the chance to use the whole rig, and it worked great and all, but the screw holding my camera came loose several times, the first time my camera actually fell off the rig (luckily I was only about 3 ft from the ground and it still works) Also, the other screw which was used to screw my handle on was coming loose as well (constant re-tightening) JUST A WARNING: USE YOUR CAMERA STRAP IN CASE THE SCREW FAILS YOU LIKE IT DID TO ME SEVERAL TIMES!!The fix for this? Just constantly check the screw and tighten it so it doesn't come loose!!EDIT: Ok, so to fix the loose screw, you need to wedge a screwdriver where you would normally put your fingers to tighten it, then tighten it with a screw driver and the screw should be secure for a long time, just re-tighten with a screwdriver before using it again! 4Works Great on My DIY Steadicam Like a lot of other people out there, I got this slider to use it on my DIY steadicam. It worked really well for the steadicam, which I've posted about much more extensively online under the heading of "All Wood DIY Steadicam." This slider is ideal for a steadicam for two reasons: it allows you to use different lens lengths without rebalancing the steadicam, and it accommodates a number of camera orientations and positions.Note that there are two different threaded holes on the bottom of this slider. I only used one to connect to my steadicam, as that is very solid. This is a great slider for a DSLR at this low price. Very nice. 5Affordable but gears run rough This is a good entry level focusing rail for macro photography. It works for light to medium setups, but strains under a heavy camera and heavy lens combination. The gears run roughly as though they are misaligned, but the parts are metal, so they should last. Since I only do occasional macro work, this suits my needs, but if I relied on doing a lot of macro work, I would invest in something with better quality and more features. 4Garbage. Don't waste your time or money. I purchased this rail with high hopes. Sure it's cheap, but how bad could it be?1. The rail I got is different than pictured. Not critical, but it's not exactly what I ordered. The rubber on top is different, and there is no 3/8" hole on the bottom mounting plate.2. It broke within minutes of opening the package. The poorly-cast gear doesn't properly engage the poorly-cast rack, resulting in the slider jamming every inch or so. When trying free it (very gently!), the knob snapped off in my fingers. The inner shaft appears to be made out of some sort of cheap pot metal. Whatever it is, it doesn't hold up to any torque.3. 0 for 2 so far. Maybe I can salvage this and still use it? I've got a project due tomorrow, which is why I ordered it in the first place. Lemmie just nudge my camera into position and use the setscrew to tighten everything down so I can take a picture. Nope.... the screw doesn't actually engage anything. And the rail binds pretty badly with any weight on it, so manual adjustments of less than an inch are impossible.Overall, a totally worthless product. I would give it zero stars if I could. Avoid this and please go with anything else. 1Adequate But Not Great I guess you get what you pay for. It is very solidly made, though. I simply needed this so I can create a home-made panorama head. It accomplishes that function. However, the action is not always as smooth as another reviewer noted. The rack-and-pinion mechanism occasionally jams up so bad that you can hardly turn the adjustment knob. And then it frees up again and works fine. I don't understand why, but it's probably just poor quality control. But for less than $15 and free shipping (from China, no less), this is not a bad deal.Follow-up comment:I figured out why the rack-and-pinion jammed up. It was because the adjustment knob had slid partially out of the unit. There is a set-screw that is supposed to hold it in place, but it was loose so that the knob slid out partway and had too much play, which caused it to jam. Tightening the set screw (with a very small allen wrench) solved the problem. Another positive comment - the thing arrived one month before the stated estimated arrival time. Can't complain about that! 3Manual Focus Slider Rail For Macro Work. This rail is for macro work on the tripod, It will slide your whole camera in and out of focus.... ( 2 way.. move back and forth)Rail works great, slides back and forward, by itself, but mount a camera on it and then it drags because of the weight of the camera on the rail.Didn't know it would do that, right away.... But I will still use it... just a little harder turning the knob, sliding the camera forward or back on the rail. But it still works great for the manual focusing. I think I will just grease the rail and it will slide with less of a drag.... maybe then I'll change the rate of stars to higher. Other wise it's a great little tool for macro manual focus photography, and It doesn't take up much space in the "Camera Bag".Two knobs on the side .... One slides the camera on the rail back and forward, and the other Knob tightens, locks it in place. It doesn't come apart from the base..... has stoppers on both front and back ends Slides about 2 inches either way from center set at 0 on the scale. 3Good rail for the price, could be more tightly made Great deal for the price. It's solid metal and feels like it, it's not lightweight for its size. However it doesn't allow as fine of adjustments as I was hoping for my macro work. the adjustment knobs are also pretty wobbly and loose. In the end I got it to work, but I had to keep one hand on the adjustment knob at all times with tension so it would move consistently. I'm shooting at about 2.5X (1:2.5), if you're not shooting as close up it should be just fine. The rubber pad does keep the camera in place, and overall it works fine. I just wish the knobs weren't so loose and had finer adjustments possible. 4Great value I recently completed a photography class where I was introduced to macro sliders. This came in the mail yesterday and I am happy. It is all metal construction except for the camera mounting pad. The action is very smooth and allows for very small adjustments. The scale is in millimeters but the action is so smooth, it can be adjusted in much smaller increments. For the price, it probably should be 5 stars but it doesn't have a quick release. Also, if sideways adjustments are needed, the tripod has to be moved or buy a second one. It is strictly manual but for under $15, I didn't expect much. I am just putting in my order for a second one while shipping is still free.I just uploaded an image taken using this.I just received the second one I ordered and the action is just a smooth as the first one I bought. 4Works great for occasional use Professional quality? No, no, of course not! But you already knew that when you saw the cheap price, didn't you? The question is, does it work passably well for occasional macro photography. The answer is Yes, it does! It's fine, actually. There are just a couple of things you should be aware of:1) It has 2 knobs - one turns the gear which moves the rail back and forth, and the other locks it in place. The gear is built to fairly loose tolerances, meaning it wiggles and the knob itself is not damped and does not offer any resistance. So if the locking knob is not tightened and you tilt the camera too far (not uncommon in macro photography because you're often facing the camera downward), the camera and rail can easily slide right out of the bracket and crash on the ground. I'd hate to see you accidentally destroy your camera or expensive macro lens, so please, for the love of Pete, TIGHTEN THE LOCKING KNOB! It's really an awareness thing. Once you realize that this little gizmo has the power to wreck your camera if you're not paying attention, you'll be more careful and you'll be fine.2) The item description says that this product is for Canon, Nikon, and Sony. It's really for ANY camera, as long as that camera has a standard tripod mounting hole at the bottom, which means 99% of all cameras in existence. Works fine with my Pentax cameras and any other brand.3) As mentioned earlier, the gear is not built to tight tolerances. It wiggles a little bit back and forth and side to side. This will be fine for most people... even if you're focus stacking, most focus stacking software will have no trouble aligning the images even if the rail wiggled a half millimeter or so between shots. But if you're doing super high precision work where you have to make sure the focus plane is absolutely straight, or if you need to precisely measure the increments between shots, then look elsewhere. Again, you get what you pay for. For light duty use this thing is great. 43.5 Stars - Does a good job, has a few issues for what I'm using it for. I purchased this item for use in a DIY Steady Cam (Youtube - Silver Flyer). My thoughts on the product: It's decent for my purposes, and I would probably give it 3.5 stars. Not to say I don't like it and it doesn't do it's job, there are just a couple minor issues with it for what I use it for. What I've found: The thumb screw to tighten the plate from moving back and forth never completely tightens or loosens over time and it throws the balance off because it moves. I'm afraid to crank it TOO tight in fear that I might strip it. The other issue is at certain times, my DSLR body gets in the way of the screw and makes it tough to turn. I have large hands and it's hard to grip sometimes. The long plate for mounting my camera is ok, but I have to position it correctly because sometimes the lenses that I use rest against the rubber on the plate making zooming and focusing an issue. ** I realize this is not the fault of the plate itself, it's just a finding I'm having from the application I'm using it for. **The thumb screws are great, but the little triangular tightening thingy sometimes gets jammed under the plate when moving the plate back and forth. Not really anything major, just a minor nuisance. The plate does it's job and it's fairly well made. For the price, I guess it's satisfactory. I would have liked it more if there were some sort of better locking mechanism to really restrict movement. 3
