Customer Reviews

Over priced and over rated. This is not the work horse of Dremel tools from days gone by. If you use it for any thing that requires much torque (cut off wheels) it gets very hot and then smokes. Apparently once you let the smoke out, it doesn't work anymore. :}. Dremel did replace it, but I had to pay shipping. Once it's out of warranty, I'll be screwed. I'll try something different next time.1A great kit! Read here for tip on breaking in the flexible shaft! We ve often had the need for a Dremel tool in the garage and also with the pottery my wife makes. Many times some of the ceramic glaze runs after bring fried in the kiln and we need to grind the glaze (now glass) off of the pottery shelves and utensils. In the past, we tried a cordless rechargeable dremel for these tasks but found it severely underpowered and unable to do the job. We knew it was time for something beefier and more powerful. We have a friend who is a master mechanic and he has a high speed Dremel setup with a flexible shaft. The thing is wicked and can do just about anything. He uses it with grinders and cutoff wheels. After hearing what we needed it for, he recommended this kit. (For easier changes of dremel tools, he highly recommended the Dremel 4486 chuck.)This kit has everything you could possibly want, and more. The tool has variable speeds and the flexible shaft that makes working with all the tools so much easier.Tip! Read the instructions! It s important that you follow them closely when you attach the flexible shaft to the Dremel, and then you must run the Dremel and shaft vertically at high speed to get the shaft to break in and be lubricate fully before use! Some have complained about issues with the flexible shaft but this is an important procedure to prevent that from happening. The kit comes with a case that allows everything to fit inside. If you look at the plastic interior, you can see what pieces go where. It s a great way to keep it all together! If you re looking for a high speed Dremel tool that comes with the flexible shaft and all kinds of attachments and fittings, all at a great price, this is it! Don t forget to get the 4486 chuck for easier changes! It makes the Dremel so much easier to use if you re utilizing different tools. 5I no longer trust the Dremel brand.I purchased this Dremel 4000 about a month or so ago. It has already quit working. I was using the unit to polish and carve polymer clay, which is very soft. It gave no warning, it just wouldn't turn back on after I switched bits. I am really disappointed, as my return window closed 10 days ago. I expected more from Dremel, as my family has used their rotary tools for years. This was my first Dremel to buy on my own, and I chose it over the cheaper brands because I trusted the Dremel brand for quality. I think the flex-shaft is also somewhat cheap in quality. I hate giving bad reviews, but I can't recommend a product that quits after a month. I even bought all kinds of accessories to go with it. Good luck with your purchase, I hope yours lasts longer than mine.13rd times a charm? This would be the 3rd dremel I've attempted to use and all 3 have performed the same. The moment I plug it in, and use it, so begins the ever short lived and sudden death of my series 4000.One use, out of all three. How is it possible you ask? Well so do I...1Trying a cheapyHad a Dremel for years, liked it, and it finally expired. A good stout machine for its size, so I spent the big bucks and got one with all the accessories. Bad choice. It is powerless, cable shaft slips even without a workload. Actually, a workload compared with old unit, can't be applied. Dremel seems to be living off of old reputation without making supporting contribution.2Zero starsThe collet nut opening is too small to accommodate the shaft of the accessories. Also when using the handheld tool two collets are required but only one was included. I m guessing some parts weren t shipped. Based on the mostly positive reviews, my experience is probably an isolated experience.1Susceptible to fine dust, but otherwise good. After just a few months the tool died yesterday. I've used it a moderate amount, probably a few times every week or two since July when I purchased this, I estimate less than 10 hours of use in total. No warning, no intermittent issues, just switched it on yesterday to do a little fine drum sanding, and nothing happens. I pulled the contacts, cleaned and re-installed, no help.Update: A few days after posting this review, I took the tool completely apart, used compressed air to blow everything out, and re-assembled. YouTube is a great resource for such an undertaking BTW. The device went back to work as good as new and have been using it at about the same rate as before every since without problems. While I'm disappointed it failed so quickly, there was quite a bit of very fine saw dust inside that apparently caused the issue. If you use this to do a lot of fine sanding, you may experience the same, so beware.3DisappointedI returned the first order because it had been opened and pieces were missing, along with the information booklet and paperwork. I received the second one, unopened and untampered with, it appeared to be new and unused. I looked it over and put it back into the case. A couple of months passed before I had time to get it out to use it. I was using it to lightly sand the edoes of some woodenergy plaques. It ran for about 6 minutes before I turned it off and layed it down. I picked it up to start again and it wouldn't come on. I let it lay for about 10 minutes, unplugged it, plugged it back in and tried it again. It came on and I used it for another 4 or 5 minutes. I turned it off a secondition time, to do other things and when I tried to turn it on again, it would not turn on. I called customer service and told them the situation, but they said it had been over the warranty time of 30 days. I was very dispappointed. I understand warranty time, but this was used for only a few minutes and I am in the middle of a project that is due the next day. This sort of thing puts a damper on my choosing Amazon for my purchases. I understand rare instances occur, but I also feel you should know when a customer is struggling with confidence in your products/services. Thank you for reading my comment.1less than 20 minutes of use before the motor died!!I had been considering this purchase for over a year. I was super excited to get my dremel with all my accessories, I had a lot of crafty projects all lined up. I live in South Korea but bought it and a ton of extras like the dremel work station and the plunge router base when I was home visiting my family in the the US. Got back home to SK and started into my crafting projects. I got about 20minutes of use out of it before the motor just pooped out in a big bang..... I am currently returning this and will be buying a Craftsman which seems to be the one all the other people switch to when their dremel blows out. Sadly I will have to pay 40bucks just to send it back to the US so i can return it. In short High hopes... BIG disappointment!2Everything you need!I was beyond happy when I opened up this set. I do bone carving and this set gives me so much versatility. What is awesome is that the flex shaft is included. Not to mention the many different bits and other bells and whistles. The photos included are just a rough sample of what I did just in one sitting with this set (coyote and raccoon skulls). I apologize for the bad lighting. I need to clean up a lot of the lines and do some sanding to finish, but I am so happy with this product. I would recommend it for just about any and all projects. Household or otherwise. Well worth the money, even at twice the price.I know that we will be using it to help our son with box wood derbies. Also in small model designs. This kit really has everything you could ever need. Well, except for the stand to hang it from if using the flex shaft. Otherwise this is a PERFECT kit.If you are looking for that all purpose tool, this is it.I would also recommend that if you are going to be doing engraving, etching, or carving of any fashion that you invest in a good respirator, only because dust (wood, glass, bone, metal) is not good to breathe in. Just a side note for any one who is a crafter like myself.Thank you Dremel for an amazing kit and amazing products! You have a customer for life!5Follow the directions!Follow the directions!! So many reviews stating theirs died. Question is: did you follow the initial setup instructions? They tell you to run the Dremel on high, at the highest RPM, for 5 minutes with no load on it. I did this and could hear the unit running smoother as the 5 minutes went on. I then read to do the flexible attachment on high, hanging straight, for 2 minutes. I did this as well. Then I started using it and put some major loads on it and had no issues. Still works like a charm! Great kit and I m very happy with it.5Meh... Fist product that arrived had a commutation problem and would hickup periodically while on. Amazon replaced it. I received a second one but the same thing was happening but to a much lesser extent so I just kept it since I needed it to get somethings done. The EZ-Lock mechanism is worthless. I must have ruined at least 3 cutting wheels where the center shaft just dissociated itself from the cutting wheel. I broke another grinding wheel very easily. I must be a big oaf breaking all these accessories. Anyway, quality questionable. Very cheap enclosure. Expected more from a name brand Dremel. 3
