Customer Reviews

Very Nice, But Could Be BetterThe main selling point of this Dorcy International lantern is the Bluetooth wireless control through your smartphone app. It works very well once you are able to connect. The first time when I tried to pair the app with the lantern, the app said it didn't find the lantern. When I made a second attempt, the blue light (the pairing light) doesn't turn on, no matter how long I press the main switch. I had to remove the batter cover to disconnect the power to "reboot" the lantern. Then I was able to turn on the blue light for pairing. The second attempt was successful. I hope that's just a small glitch that happens only to me.As for the design of the lantern itself, it's not so intuitive. The battery compartment cover is big. It will be a little hard for a woman to tighten it. During tightening the cover, it's a little hard to align it properly. The top lid for removing the headlamp is also not intuitive. I still can't figure out a comfortable way to open it. The headlamp is the same, you have to stick your nail into a small slid to press down the latch to open it, and it's not easy. Nothing is easy. Even the Pull Out Hang Hook doesn't come out easily because there's not place for your finger to pry it up.At this size and with so advanced technology being used in this lantern and app, I expected the lantern to be rechargeable and have a charging port for cellphones. It's quite annoying to have to buy D cells, and it's not good for the environment. I thought the headlamp was rechargeable, but it's just sitting at the top compartment. It uses two AAA batteries. It's quite irritating for me to have a device that is "not quite there."The app is well developed and works very well to compensate much of my complaints about the not-so-intuitive design of the lantern. The light is bright and adjustable to your need. And there's a night light for the convenience. It's also has a flashing mode to be used as a warning or emergency light. The app also has a setting to automatically tun off the light automatically at certain time. For its functionality, I recommend it!4Love this lantern!Seriously, we are over the moon with this lantern. Maybe we are sheltered, but we had no clue that lanterns came like this! You download an app and it taps you into all kinds of features for your lantern-you can dim it, set a timer, it will give you elevation and temperature readings and can even take a message and translate it into flashes of the light to morse code....What???? It also has a removable head lamp in the top part of the lantern. My husband could literally not stop playing with this when we received it. We dug a few minutes for the 6 D Cell batteries that we needed (not included) and downloaded the app and man, this baby can really shine a light on things. We turned off the house lights and had it in the kitchen and you definitely could cook or read by this light very easily in case of a power outage. It will definitely be a great item to have for camping! It is a bit heavier than a normal lantern, but this is a well made unit with all the perks. Perfect gift for a camper!Overall, this is made so well that I doubt I will need to re-buy it, but I'm sure we will get quite spoiled with this and would definitely purchase again. The app is awesome, the light is well made and I think you still get a fairly decent deal even though it is not an inexpensive item. In my opinion it is worth the extra money and if I needed to I would purchase.5Amazing Functionality - Fun to Just Play Around With This bluetooth enabled lamp is really a very remarkable product. Believe me, when you first receive this thing you could spend hours just playing with all the functions controlled by the downloadable app. While its fun to play with, it does provide decent illumination and is a worthwhile investment for just that. 5Fantastic if you have a compatible device with Bluetooth Low Energy. Skip it if you don't have an LE device.First - unless you have a device that supports LE (Low Energy) Bluetooth, don't bother. It's not made clear anywhere that that's a requirement - but after checking the website I found that the device required LE. That eliminates 90% of the Android devices and any older iOS products (iPhone 4S and newer have LE.) This lantern is mostly useless without the app. You'll only be able to use it as a basic light. Even finding the app on Google Play was next to impossible. I finally used Google and search the web, eventually finding an unindexed entry in the app store - with one review and 50-100 downloads. Looks like nobody else can find it either.I eventually had to borrow a friend's new iPhone to test the lantern, as none of my numerous Android devices or the old iPad 2 have LE.So, if you have a device that DOES have LE, this is a great device. It's more than a lantern. It's a weather station, Morse Code flasher, lantern (BRIGHT!), night light and more. There's a removable headlamp. That is worth about $3.00 and requires 2 AAA batteries.Details:Headlamp - it's a really cheap headlamp that uses three low power LED's and is powered by two AAA batteries. There's no way to turn it on unless you open the storage compartment. It really looks like one of those "can we add the kitchen sink" additions. Not really a selling feature.Light: It's BRIGHT. Will light up a 10x10 foot room, tent or campsite. The brightness control switch is a bit clunky - it's better left to the app. Many levels, from very dim to "I can't look directly at the light" brightness. The night light is one brightness.Batteries: For the price I expected rechargeable. You need to supply six D cells for the lantern and two AAA for the headlamp.Size: One foot tall with the handle down. So it's big!Weight: 4 pounds, 7 ounces with the batteries.Proximity: The lamp senses when the paired device is in range and turns on when the device is in range. Can be deactivated.Morse code: You can program Morse code messages via the app.Climate sensor: One of the coolest features, but you can't access it without the app. The lantern senses temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, heat index, altitude and more.Bottom line: If you have a compatible smart phone or tablet, this is a great travel or emergency lantern / weather station. Full featured and well made at a decent price point. If you don't have a compatible device, it's an overpriced light with features that are impossible to access.4Big, Heavy, and Bright Lantern. If you're looking for a heavy, sturdy, very bright lantern that can be controlled remotely by your smartphone, this is a pretty good choice. It has some very good features, but it also has some features I didn't care for. For me, this lantern won't really work, which is why I gave it three stars.- PROS -* It's very bright. The brightest setting is blindingly bright, in fact! I've never needed a lantern this bright, but if you had to do surgery during a blackout, this lantern will help. Great for emergencies where you need a great deal of light.* You can adjust the brightness levels. Using the app on your smartphone, you can change the brightness from moderately bright to super-bright. It's an LED, I believe, because the main light is very white.* If you only need a little light, there's a nightlight mode, which uses a smaller, dimmer light bulb, which has more of a natural orange glow, as opposed to the super-white glow of the LED bulb. It's adjustable, too, so you can control how bright the nightlight is.* Using your smartphone, you can control the brightness and regular vs. nightlight modes. You can set the lantern to broadcast a Morse code signal, by typing your message into the app. (Of course, that doesn't guarantee you'll be able to understand the reply, if you don't know Morse code.) You can set the lantern to turn off when you walk far enough away, if you're carrying your phone with you, and then turn back on when you return. This could be helpful for hiking at night, or making a bathroom run in the middle of the night, since the light will turn on when you get close, guiding you back to your campsite. The app will also tell you the current temperature and weather conditions, although when we tested it, the temperature was off by about 10 degrees.* It comes with a free headlamp. It's a small lantern with an elastic strap that fits around your head, for use while spelunking, fixing a car, or exploring the fort your kids built under the dining table. However, the headlamp requires extra batteries to use. I already had to buy a pack of D-cells for the lantern itself, I wasn't about to order another pack of batteries so I could test the headlamp.- CONS -* It's heavy. Like, really heavy! If you swung this lantern around and hit someone in the head with it, you would mostly likely kill them, or at least cause significant brain damage.* Part of the reason it's so heavy is because it requires six D-cell batteries. Six! They weren't included, and I didn't have six extra D-cells lying around, so I had to order them in order to test the lantern. I have no idea how long these batteries will last, especially if you're using the ultra-bright mode.* The handle is very wide. It's so wide, my hand can't curl comfortably around the handle. This makes it more of a large man's lantern, not intended for those with small hands.* In order to control the light settings, you must download and use an app from the company that makes the lantern. You can turn the lantern on and off without the app, but you can't control the brightness settings. Which means if you don't have a smartphone, this lantern is all but worthless. And if it's an emergency situation, where you need to conserve power, you'll be draining your phone's battery by using it to adjust the lantern. The concept of the app is good in theory, but in practicality, I'd rather have a lantern I can adjust without digging out my cellphone. This lantern has good points and bad, as I said. I'll keep it around for the next time we go camping, as it would be nice to have a super-bright lantern at night. However, it won't be much good in an emergency. And I don't like how heavy it is, or how thick the handle is, as it makes it difficult for me to use. This lantern will be more for my husband, not me.3Full of Features I Didn't Know I WantedThis Dorcy lantern is substantial. The light it puts out is very good for camping without being too bright as some hunting LED lights can be. With batteries loaded into the bottom it weighs almost 5 pounds. Manually using the buttons on the side to turn on the various lights is simple and adjusting the dimmer for each of the two different main lights is easy. There is an app I was able to quickly load on my iPhone 5s that makes operation even easier and adds some great features. I am able to set an exact time (8:07pm) for the light to turn off. There is an awesome "Proximity Control" (that can be toggled on with the app) that turns off the lantern when I walk away with my phone in hand, then turns the light back on when I return. There is even a place to type in a message the lamp will blink in Morse Code! It also looks as if I can use the app to manage up to 4 lanterns. The included headlamp is nothing special and does not come close to the quality of the lantern. It seems like back up or emergency use only. The kids and I are casual tent campers, a week in the summer, plus half a dozen overnights throughout the year. The car is never too far away, so clearly we are not serious woodsmen. My teenage son took one look at the lamp and "claimed" it for summer camp.5High tech lantern in search of a problemAs a lantern, this product works pretty well. It produces a fairly even light, decent spread, and the light quality is good enough to read comfortably with. The headlamp is a nice addition, though not particularly good. It's good enough for an emergency kit or if you need to walk in the dark through a clear path. I wouldn't use it over uneven terrain. Most of the phone app features are interesting, but aren't particularly useful. The proximity control works, but I can't get it to turn off at a reasonable distance. The morse code seems gimicky, though could be useful in some dire emergency. The other functions like the night light and brightness control can be accessed from the controls on the lantern itself so not sure if there's any real need for the bluetooth (and it seems the bluetooth is running all the time so there's a tiny drain on the battery all the time).Overall the are better lanterns on the market, but if an app is important to you, this is a decent choice.4Nice LightWorks awesome with the iPhone.5Bluetooth In An LED Lamp? Yep, We're DEFINITELY In The 21st Century Now!When I saw they took the Bluetooth technology to an LED lamp, I knew we were definitely in the 21st Century now. The integration of Bluetooth into literally every facet of our society continues to amaze me (although they better steer clear of my toilet for this!) and it only stands to reason we'll be seeing more and more of this in the coming years as virtually everyone on the planet will own some sort of smart device. This Dorcy International 41-3200 App Controlled LED Lantern with Removeable Headlamp works with my iPhone 6 just fine giving you instant control right there from the free app which monitors temperature, humidity, and elevation, among other things. For campers, this new gizmo will give you the added bonus of translating a message for you into morse code--WHAT WHAT?! How cool is that? And if you need to venture off from the campsite and need some light while walking, the removable headlamp is a cool addition to this. Using 6 D batteries, you'll get a lot of juice out of this product before it's all said and done. Can't wait to go camping again now!5Neat! Practical? To be clear as long as the device you intend to download the associated application onto supports Bluetooth Low Energy, and as long as you intend to always utilize the application to operate the product this lantern is super neat! For what it is, the interface is fairly intuitive, and the controls are the type that you show off to your friends in a now watch this manner. The nightlight has one setting that is appropriate for its task, and the main source of light has several settings that really do range from low light to uncomfortably bright; which, while probably overkill for typical ambient applications, has already come in handy for actually trying to complete a task in the dark like changing a tire. However, trying to operate the settings of the lantern on the lantern itself is a little frustrating. In fact, having to physically interact with the lantern at all diminishes its value. That is, although the handle is sturdy, changing the settings on the lamp is not fun, trying to rethread or close or open any compartment on the lantern is less than fluid, and the touted removable headlamp is beyond cheap. I probably would have felt more confident in the quality of the lantern overall if the headlamp were not included I m talking child s toy cheap. The strengths of the lantern do set it apart from any lamp I ve ever used, though. The ability to control multiple lanterns up to four from one control device is very attractive to me. I also really like the interface that allows the user to type in a message and have it translated into morse code to be beamed from the lantern. Hopefully I ll never be in a situation in which I would need to use this feature, but I like that it s there. Of course, the actual lighting is also beyond adequate. All in all, this is a neat lantern. I think it is probably best utilized for mild outdoor recreation such as a party at the campgrounds or in the back yard, simply because of its reliance on software to be at its best (of course, if one has to fire up the morse code at the barbeque, things have probably gone downhill quickly). For more intensive outdoor applications, I think there are some less expensive and more practical options. This lantern definitely has its place, it is just a matter of making sure one is picking up the right tool for the job.3High Tech goes CampingI never thought I would like a high tech camping lantern, but this one is actually quite functional and can do things that are pretty useful. I was torn between 4 and 5 stars, so consider this a 4.5 star review. On the plus side, this lantern is bright, adjustable and appears to be water resistant. A little mist won't hurt it. The blue tooth connection was seamless in my experience, with flash and brightness controls.that were finely responsive. I liked the morse code function as well. The added spotlight, headlamp was a good thought. On the down side, with 6 D batteries and 2 AAA required for operation, this thing is pretty heavy. I don't plan on packing it myself, but will use it for home emergencies.5
