Good size & light output. Unfortunately, the unit's front cap frequently needed "fiddling" with to get the flashlight to light This LED flashlight is nicely priced, has good light output and fit comfortably in my pocket. Initially I used it almost daily for a number of weeks and the batteries held up well. However, after a few weeks of use the light-on function proved quite inconsistent. I frequently needed to turn the metal cap at the bulb end until the appropriate internal contact was completed so the light came on. Even when finally turned on, the light was often dim without further fiddling, and it frequently turned itself off so the front cap needed readjustment to again turn the unit on. I cleaned the front internal contact with an eraser, but this did not eliminate the problem.It may be that my sample is an outlier-exception, and other folks will not find a similar problem. However, the design of the contact at the bulb end does seems to have the potential to mis-function as occurred with my unit.Bottom line: Nice price, size, and acceptable output but, at least with my copy, an inconsistent light-on function. 3Don't waste your money... Don t waste your money on the Dorcy. I bought this a while ago along with the Rayovac Value Bright 3 Lumen LED Pen Light with Battery (BRSLEDPEN-B), both from Amazon. The Rayovac is a 5 star item; the Dorcy barley rates a 1 star. The light goes on & off at will & you need to bang it a few times to get it to work. A piece of junk.Definitely get the Rayovac. It works like it s supposed too, comes with a battery & is brighter then the Dorcy which needs two batteries. The Dorcy is useless when you re in a tight spot & need a light that works. They re about the same price also. 1When I bought it: Nice. Two months later: Trash. Initial Review:Bright, well made, solid metal construction (plastic switch, though). Light quality is good, lacks the blue cast of so many other LED lights; would call it "daylight white" rather than "warm white". The diffuser does a good job; the light is brightest in an area about 6X3 inches at 3 feet distance, and gradually fades to the periphery - no abrupt fall-off. Will be in my pocket for a long time.Update:I've been using this on an every-other-day basis (ie, occasional use) for about 2 months now, and it's started to malfunction already. It's kept in my breast pocket and has not been abused, but the plastic on-off switch is wearing out, the light flickers whenever I move it now - it needs to be replaced. I am downgrading to 1 stars from 4; it wore out WAY too soon..... I ddn't even get through one set of batteries. 1Awesome product. Super handy. Nice and solid. Reliable, with long battery life. Has a very evenly distributed beam of light that s pretty bright and broad. I wish it were just a little brighter though. Great price. I think it shipped rather quickly too. 5Oh man, it's bright! The pen clip is part of a plastic cap, which worries me a bit as far as durability, as I could see this cracking or breaking with heavy use. Once it's all put together It's a bit heavier than I'd like, but it's just the weight of the batteries, which can't really be helped. All of that said, this thing is BRIGHT!!! I bought it thinking it would make a good penlight for checking pupils, but it's way too bright for that, so now it's my emergency scene light. WAY more light than you'd expect for such a small pen, which is awesome. Several of my co-workers have seen it and bought their own and everyone is very happy with them. It would be nice if you could actually specify silver versus black. I bought three and ended up with 2 black ones and 1 silver. They're both pretty cool looking and I'd like to get a second silver one to even out the batch, but would have to take a chance at getting another black one. I haven't had it long enough to know about the battery life, but given that it's an LED, I would imagine it's pretty decent. 4Pretty handy to have around. My husband always carries 2 of these with him. He's a tech and they are light weight enough that he can put one in his mouth when the job require two hands and some direct light in the back of the machines he works one. I keep one our end tables and we have one downstairs on the night stands, and one kept in the car at all times. Not the brightest light, but it works for it's intended purposes. 4Excellent pen light Purchased for a family member who works at a hospital - it's a good gift - several people at her work have commented on it.Good buy, not too bright, uses AAA batteries, and a nice solid stainless feel.Edit 9/10/2012I have discovered a problem with this device. Do not replace the batteries from the light. What can happen is the LED's pin can be twisted when screwing on the light, this then shorts both LED pins to the case - eg: 0V potential across the LED - no light. Instead replace the batteries from the end - the clip side. This should prevent these problems from occurring again.Still a great light. 5Heavy duty; triple A batters a real plus! This pen light is pretty heavy, which I like. All the others I've had were plastic or cheap metal and broke easily. This also takes 2 triple A batteries which is a HUGE plus because I hate having to buy those strange small sizes. You can find triple As anywhere and I usually have them in my house for other things anyhow.This has a great LED light and a strong metal clip. It's a little heavy for a side/hip pocket but works well in a breast pocket. I followed the directions when inserting the batteries and it didn't work but that's because the directions told me to put them in backwards! Occasionally the light won't work and I have to shake it a little or make sure it's screwed on tight. the cap has never fallen off but sometimes the batteries don't want to connect right or something. Other than that I love it! 4Not reliable at all In the beginning, I loved this little pen light. It was bright and lasted a long time without me having to change the batteries. Plus it made me look good on rounds with my attendings if they needed a light. But less than a year after I bought it (which isn't that long considering you don't use this everyday) it started not turning on when I pushed the switch. The bulb didn't burn out and if I jostled the case it would sometimes turn on. But this became more frequent and today it doesn't turn on or even stay on when I shake it. It seems as though the connection is not very secure and I can hear the batteries rattling around enough that they don't form a full circuit.I really liked this in the beginning and would even give it 4.5 stars if I could. But since it doesn't do the one thing it's supposed to do without no fault of my own (never dropped it, always kept it in my white coat pocket), I hate having ever bought this. Do no buy and get something more expensive that'll last longer and not make you look stupid when you hand your attending a light that doesn't work. 1Wimpy light with ZERO regulation I have previously purchased the Energizer Aluminum Pen LED Flashlight(PLED23AE) and liked it very much. But I am curious about this Dorcy 41-1218 2AAA-Battery 5MM LED Pen Light mainly because, according to another reviewer, it is supposed to be "better than the Energizer version". After testing the two pen lights side by side, my conclusion is the complete opposite.In terms of mechanical construction, the Dorcy and Energizer pen lights are very similar. Their tail caps and on/off switches have the same flimsy feeling. But I have no problems with either version, anyway.When powered by two fresh alkaline AAA cells (2x 1.6V), the light produced by Dorcy pen light is significantly dimmer than that by Energizer pen light. But at least it is marginally serviceable for indoor illumination purposes. However, when powered by two rechargeable NiMH cells (2x 1.2V), the Dorcy gives out such a wimpy light that it is basically useless. (See my Customer Images for brightness comparisons).The reason becomes clear when I disassembled both pen lights. The Energizer contains a power module to boost lower battery voltage to drive its LED. That's why it can continue to shine even when the combined battery voltage falls to 1V. The Dorcy, on the other hand, has no power regulator at all. Its LED is driven directly by the two AAA cells, and so the current is very sensitive to battery voltage. At 3.1-3.2V (two fresh alkaline cells), the LED current is around 30mA, so its light is acceptable. When the battery voltage decreases to 2.6V, the LED current drops to only 2mA, and its light is barely visible.On the package of the Dorcy pen light it proudly advertises "NICHIA Super Bright LED". However, those Nichia 5mm LEDs are sorted into 'bins' based on brightness, and priced accordingly. Depending on which bin you get, the brightness can vary by a ratio of 3 to 1. Judging by the performance of my pen light, Dorcy is probably buying from the bargain-basement bin. Furthermore, as I have shown in my testing, even a good LED cannot do its job when it is improperly driven.In summary, I'm appalled by the extremely cheap design of this Dorcy LED pen light. It pales in comparison to the Energizer 2xAAA pen light. Even the Rayovac BRSLEDPEN-B LED Pen Light, powered by just one AAA cell, can produce brighter and more consistent light. The Rayovac is also more compact, and available at lower cost. 2
