    Great for doing the rough grinding on tools I purchased the stone to do the initial shaping on several plane irons, and plan on using it for touching up my chisels as well. Both sides cut very well, and the base has non-skid feet, holding the stone steady while you are working with it. Sharpening is still work, but this helps a lot. 5Great for fast starts! This thing is great for those times you have a new tool or for your construction chisels- times when you need to remove some steel quickly for sharpening. (But I never drop things!) Establishing the bevel or removing grinder marks etc is a piece of cake with the Extra-Coarse side. Having a second base is great- I originally bought it this way because it was cheaper that day than just buying the stone. Now when doing quick sharpening of a carpentry chisel I can use the extra course, switch to the coarse and have the fine sitting beside it. It really speeds things up. Does that mean I need three. . . 5Good product. This is a nice stone. I use my for the rough sharpening of chisels, planes, and knives. I also use it to true the wet stones I use for the fines sharpening of those same tools. Expensive but effective....and flat! 5I use this bench stone to thin and repair my ... I use this bench stone to thin and repair my kitchen knives.I cook for a living, this product helps me keep my knives very sharp.I wish I would have purchased the 10 inch model instead. 5DMT is as good as it gets One side of the stone is coarse, the other extra coarse. Plenty large enough for general knife and tool sharpening that I do. Has non-skid feet and flipping the stone from one side to the other is too easy. I've gotten ride of all my traditional oil stones and use only DMT products. I have a 4-inch blue coarse DMT stone I bought at Frontier Sporting Goods in Fairbanks, Alaska in 1979 and it still works like a champ!DMT is the best and easiest sharpening stones to use. 5Excellent Sharpening System I also bought the 8" Fine / Extra-Fine 'stone' making for a complete sharpening system. I have used it on pocket knives, kitchen knives and even axes, and have been able to get a keen edge on tools that previously defeated my efforts. DMT stones are a bit pricey, but should last effectively forever. Just remember that sharpening a dull tool may take some time. 5
