Customer Reviews

Not Flat I own the 6 inch stone and it has served me well. I bought this stone because I wanted a larger continuous stone to sharpen and true up my chisels however the plate is not flat, it s dished. Useless to me. I bought the PC-11 stone which is cheaper, very flat and Japanese. I m quite shocked that DMT's quality control has dropped. For the price you pay for US workmanship, this is disappointing. 2Poor QC and order check... poor plate as well Ordered a Fine stone, Coarse was delivered.Update: amazon facilitated return and reordered fine stone. After 5 minutes of use ripples became evident on plate surface. Really discouraging experience with vendor overall. I understand the adage you get what you pay for, but in no way should $60 stones be such low quality. What a headache thus far. 1Poor quality controls, and does not give a refined polish I've been using various diamond stones, including DMT stones for about a decade. DMT used to be of the best quality, but lately I have noticed that their quality has been going downhill. When I received this stone, it had several small dimples on the diamond surface of the stone which caused the blade to catch as it was run across. I figured a good break-in would take care of it, but I was wrong. I found at least a couple of more spots on the stone which caused the blade edge to catch during sharpening, and resulted in actual damage to the edge. I sent it back to DMT, and the replacement was a little better, but still flawed. I got a refund, and decide to go back to water stones and Arkansas Stones. Boy, I forgot what I was missing. Yes, the diamond stones cut faster, but they leave deep gouges on the edge preventing a fine edge polish. A fine edge polish on any steel will literally double the longevity of its edge versus the toothy, micro-serrations of a diamond stone edge. I started putting razor edges on knives 30 years ago, and I have found that all types of bench stones have their place. I will save my DMT diamond stones for major profiling and steel shaping, water stones for most other edge refining tasks, and Arkansas Stones for extreme edge polishing so that it will shave the free standing hair off your arm without having to even press the edge against your skin to make the hair catch on the edge. So, in summary I do not recommend this stone. If you want the best overall sharpening system, get a coarse rated diamond stone for profiling work, a good water stone kit, a black surgical or translucent Arkansas Stone for an ultra edge polish, and then a good strop for final edge refinement. If I could only choose one system to save money, I would get a water stone kit and a good strop which will total less that $100.. 1My Go To Stones I've been using DMT products since the '80s. These Dia-Sharp 8" are my mainstays. Once broken in, they grade fairly and just don't require the maintenance of other stones. If you have the range (after the Medium-Extra-Fine I have them all) you can tackle anything. The 4000 (6 micron) has been a hole in this line for a while, it's nice to see it has been filled. As delivered, these stones have a lot of manufacturing "gunk" on them, and when new can be pretty sharp, i.e. grading lower (coarser) than marked. The stones break-in with use, and I actually break them in before using on anything of any significance. To break these stones in and clean them up, spray with 50/50 solution of Simple Green and Water. Use this as a lube for the stones all the time, it just works better than water or dry. Take a hardened piece (nice if it is the width of the stone) of 440C (I use a old knife tang) and run it up and down the stone, in circles or whatever, but try to cover the whole area. Keep adding Simple Green as needed, wipe the stone and steel off when it gets dirty (it will) and you should start to feel the stone smoothing out. There are little pieces of dirt and manufacturing eccentricities in the coating they put on them and you need to work that off. Once that is off, the stone will exhibit a much more uniform texture that you would expect. At the point that the surface is uniform, the stone will still grade a little rough, but will smooth out with use. Keep using the Simple Green solution to keep the stone and work clean. When breaking-in, pay significant attention to working the edges of the stone, this is important as this area can be a little rough. Even using the Dia-Lap 120 to chamfer the edges doesn't work all that well. If you are lucky enough to have a stone that they didn't get coated all the way to the edges, don't send it back; I wish they made them all that way. The stone should exhibit a uniform gray/silver appearance when properly cleaned and broken-in. 5Manufacturing defects Edit 3:Before returning my second defective stone I called DMT customer service and they were great. I am now quite satisfied. It's an aggressive sharpening stone in a highly useful grit. I wish I hadn't had to go through the trouble it took to get a good one, but I'm glad I did.If you get a defective stone, which seems to happen with some regularity, don't return it to Amazon. Call DMT at the number on the box and if they are as good to you as they were to me, you'll be happy.original review and first two edits:This stone came with manufacturing defects - a mottled surface with actual thumbprints in it, and numerous scratches and other defects. These are so visible there's no excuse for this getting through QC. It would probably sharpen OK but the marred surface is plain ugly. See my product pictures. I want to support American manufacturing but this reminds me of the 1970's when you had to buy an import if you wanted a quality car.I tried scrubbing the thumbprints and other mottling off with soapy water and a brass brush, but it didn't work. Of course, scrubbing wouldn't fix the scratches and gouges anyway. I'm returning this one for exchange and will update my review when the new one comes in.Edit: the second stone came marred with a black hard residue that cleaned off leaving what seems to be a permanently discolored surface. Unlike the first stone the diamond surface seems to be OK, so I'm going to keep it, but I am disappointed at DMT's poor quality control.Edit 2: My blade drags on the discolored area and makes a noise as it runs over it. Not good, this one is going back too.DMT's packaging is also substandard. It comes in an over-large cardboard sleeve with the diamond surface partially exposed. At this price level a simple plastic storage box should be included, even if it adds a couple dollars to the price. 4I use it regularly to sharpen and tune-up chisels, planes, and cooking knives This has been my primary sharpening tool when I return to "tune-up" my cutting tools. If a blade needs reshaping I start with the DMT Coarse, but for day to day don't need something that agressive. This takes a dull knife to very sharp - even shave your arm razor sharp. For cooking that is great, but for fine woodworking you want to go farther than merely razor sharp. The Extra-Extra fine DMT (see my separate review) doesn't work well, so if I want more than this DMT Fine provides, I go to 4000 grit, 8000 grit, and 13000 grit water stones. An unadvertised advantage of the DMT "stones" is that they can be washed in soap and water if they get contaminated by food from a cooking knife. 5DMT Diamond plates deform and delaminate. I purchased 3 DMT diamond sharpening plates. One coarse, one fine, and one extra fine. The coarse plate is a good plate, but the other two are horrible. They each have ripples in them and the extra fine plate is delaminating from the substrate. The fine plate has ripples and is an orange tint from rust I am assuming. I dry each plate off when done sharpening. Don t buy DMT PLATES. The only reason it s getting two stars is the coarse plate works well. Buy another brand. See photos. The photo with the line down the middle of the plate is a bubble of delamination. 2Junk. Buy EZE Lap instead 10 or so years ago, I had a complete set of 6 inch DMT Dia-Sharp stones that were stolen. They were top-rate quality and I missed them, so I decided to upgrade to the 8 inch set.Obviously the quality of the Dia-Sharp products from DMT has diminished over the years. This stone was horrid! The surface texture was very inconsistent with overly large diamonds scattered across the plate much like spatter from a bad welding job.A section near the edge was completely devoid of diamonds. Nothing but bare metal.I contacted DMT directly and was told that I would have to break in the stones to remove the larger diamonds. I asked for the specific procedure to do this and was provided the same. I was told to move a scrap piece of metal lightly across the service in a figure 8 pattern until it smoothed out.Tried this three times for ten minutes each time with absolutely no improvement noted.Re-contacted customer service from DMT and was asked for pictures. I provided them the same pictures that are shown here. The customer service department apologized and told me that sometimes things like this slip out . And was advised to contact Amazon for a replacement. I started a return with Amazon customer service which is phenomenal by the way, and they shipped me a new stone before I even packaged the old one to send it back. It arrived in pretty much the exact same condition as the old one.I was upset because I really wanted a good quality set of diamond stones for my sharpening endeavors. My favorite stone is a small one that I keep in a leather pouch in my toolbox. So I went to get that stone to see what the manufacturers name was on it.It s an EZE-Lap stone. Did some digging on the Internet and found the exact same size stones from them. So I ordered a set. They all arrived in perfect condition with no issues whatsoever.Don t waste your money with DMT.Just order the EZE-Lap stones and be done with it. The quality is night and day 1Best Sharpening Stone Available, Period! $$$$ As a professional meat cutter, I've had to sharpen knives several times a day as part of my craft, thousands of times, over several years. Diamond stones weren't available when I was in the trade, but other quality stones were. After I received this stone and used it on a Mora Bushcraft, I was amazed with the smooth and even surface. The diamond surface cuts amazingly fast and even, and leaves the edge razor sharp in no time. This is a fine grit stone, but can fix minor damage on the edge with minimal effort. This is the best sharpening stone I've ever used, Period! (I also purchased the 6" diamond whetstone with holes, that's nothing like this stone, Not so good! )Pros: cuts fast, even, and smoothly. No oils to cleanup, use water as lubricant, easy cleanup, non clogging surface, guaranteed to stay perfectly straight and flat. Get a razor sharp edge in minutes with proper technique. Maintain edge with a few strokes as needed.Cons: pricey, not very portable, hard to use on table/bench tops. Needs to set on a block or buy the holder.SAFETY:Dull knives cause accidents: keep your knives sharp, and Never, Never cut towards yourself! Don't use your knives/tools for tasks they weren't intended for. Always think before cutting: knives can slice long and deep. Don't become a statistic.I recommend this Diamond StoneIf your serious about sharpening your knives, then the price shouldn't be an obstacle. 5Highly recommended I bought my first dmt diamond sound a couple of years ago, and I have since phased out all of my old traditional stones. They are always flat, cut quickly, and leave a great edge. With the exception of a leather strop or the occasional polish on a translucent Arkansas, I don't use anything else anymore. I have five different dmt products, and I have had zero issues with quality control or longevity. 5
