Customer Reviews

Satisfied with XX-Coarse, X- Coarse; Not 100% with with Coarse, Fine Generally I'm pretty happy with 8'' DMT sharpeners I've purchased (they do the work) BUTCoarse and Fine sharpeners are unevenly not covered by diamonds on their edges and it is visible to naked eye (not inspected them under microscope)XX-Coarse and X-Coarse are fully diamond covered and are fine in my case.(not purchased X-Fine and XX-Fine)DMT - you can do better people!Value is important but the craftsmanship is also important. If it is not feasible to create fully covered sharpener - at least make it evenly covered. I repeat - the problem is on the edges only, but it's destroys your reputation. Especially if you take pride on "rank highest" in "diamond coverage" (as it is written on your package).P.S. I've meant no offense to anybody, just shared my personal shopping experience. So if despite this you are somehow offended - I apologize. 4Great lapping plate Well wrapped and fast post to Australia. This plate works well to flatten shapton glass stones and can be used to create a fast slurry on a stone for straight razor shaving. Much cheaper than the shapton flattening/lapping plate and will probably last longer. I am pleased with the purchase. My plate arrived dead flat (as tested with a steel rule). Also, there were no high spots detected but I did rub a square screwdriver shaft over it a few times before using it on my straight razors anyway to be safe. 54 plates good ! BUT.... I first bought the extra course which worked great after breaking it in with a butter knife . then the coarse , then the fine .all were perfectly flat and even . But yesterday the extra fine arrived . 1/2 of the plate was extra course the other 1/2 was like the course stone . it also had 2 protrusions that would stop the knife as i gently pulled the knife through . i gave it 400 strokes to see if i could break it in . It did not help at all . Then remembered that i had an old "Bench Grinder 6x1x1 Dressing Stick . i think it's carbide . I gently gave it about 30 strokes across the whole plate with the stick . The protrusions disappeared and the whole plate became even with an approx 1200 grit finish . I think it was the nickle they use to hold the diamonds that was uneven , not the diamonds . 5defective? yikes. bought this to lap my shapton 8000 grit ceramic stone.the dmt d8c stone surface arrived with several very thin, arcing scratches on the front. No big deal I thought, likely just cosmetic. Then when I tried to lap the shapton stone, it quickly created gouges in the shapton. I'm talking visible, tangible grooves in the surface. I have a cheaper 120 grit diamond stone that doesn't do this, and that will remove the gouges. This leads me to believe that the problem is with the d8c and not my shapton. Likely to return. 1Disappointing Honestly disappointed in this premium product. The coarse surface does not feel anywhere similar to the quoted grit. After sharpening a single chisel the grit seems to have become increasingly finer; now instead of cutting and abrasing it polishes. Putting a square against the plate shows that it is not even flat, but rather dished with light exposing itself in the middle of the plate. I could have rubbed my chisels on a $50 bill and produced the same results. 1I love it but... I absolutely love diamond stones for sharpening my hand planer blades. I had never used them before, I was using the water stones and got so sick of all the mess they made on top of the fact of how long it took to sharpen a blade. I literally got these, and had all my blades sharp in under 30mins! But...I am going to have to exchange them, because the abrasive has come completely off! I am not sure if it is the brand or a bad batch or what. I bought 3 the DMT D8C, DMT D8EE and DMT D8E. I contacted the company to see if this was typical and I am waiting to hear what they have to say. I have only had them for 4 weeks and only sharpened 4 or 5 times on them. I use a little bit of oil; which you don't need to, but is suppose to help lengthen the life of the stone. Guess it did work for this set. They were new when I bought them, now they are almost useless. 5I love these DMT stones, I have bought many over the years. This is a replacement for a six year old DMT D-stone that I keep at work. I work in a production Furniture shop and I do all the hand tool sharpening for the shop. The Coarse stones are not really that coarse, so don't be scared to get this one if you need it. The old stone works great still but it is not as aggressive as it used to be. The trick to long life is to use the entire face of the stone, right to the edges and corners. This helps keep the grit of the face more consistent. I love these Diamond-faced stones, I use them dry and hit them with a blast of compressed air to keep them clean. 5A Purpose Driven Choice I am a professional knifemaker and also offer a sharpening service on the side. I usually use DMT's regular whetstones (with the dots) for most work; but when I have very fine, pointed tools (like tweezers) or just need to touch up the tips of knives, the continuous surface version of DMT's whetstones are perfect (otherwise the points catch in the recessed holes). I have found DMT's 325 mesh/grit "coarse" provides just about the right balance of removing metal quickly BUT being able to leave it at that grit for a relatively fine edge if need be.Potential buyers should take note however, that this stone is a diamond substrate over a solid steel bar and measures only about 3/8" thick. In other-words, it is not on much of a raised surface like the dotted versions. This means for some knives and tools, your knuckles can get in the way. So consider using some kind of riser. I prefer clamping a piece of wood to the bench, placing a non-slip drawer material down and placing the whetstone on top. This is not a big deal, personally I love the heft of the stone, such a beautiful product.FYI, my oldest DMT stone is a 600 grit (red) and is at least 15 years old. Still flat, still cuts, DMT is the best. 5No QC. No CS. Poor production. I bought 7 DMT stones. QC seems non existent. All of them have raised edges song the sides where the steel was laser cut. All of the more fine grits have surfaces so poor that sharpening/polishing would be counter productive and damage a blade. The pictured stone is supposed you be Extra Fine, and Fine. That picture is taken with a phone and does not show how bad these even are. The sides are raised by almost 1/32" and serrated. It's really unfortunate, as it could be a great product, one that is pay double for, if it were actually flat and usable, but I'd avoid these DMT diamond stones, else you'll have to deal with returning them. 1A little uneven out of the box. Good overall. I wanted a diamond stone that could do triple-duty as a japanese waterstone flattener and knife repair type work, maybe even scissors or other household items. This stone seems to fit the bill but it did have some rough spots or raised diamond flecks that gouged-up my softer 5000 grit waterstone when new. To break in this DMT stone I ground off the the broken tip of an older chef's knife and used another smaller diamond stone to polish off the edges of this stone. It seems pretty uniform and OK for use on my waterstones now. Use caution if you decide to attack this diamond stone with another diamond stone in an attempt to speed up the break-in process. The edges of my new DMT coarse stone are now a bit too smooth and polished. The stone has lost its bite in those areas and I am unsure if it will return in time with use. Aside from the few aberrant rough spots out of the box, this DMT coarse stone isn't as coarse as I thought it would be. It produces a not-too-rough toothy edge that is appropriate as a final edge on some of my knives that I like to use for tougher chores. This 325 mesh DMT stone seems like a good compromise for people who want a diamond stone that can multi-task like myself. 4
