    Good and bad For diamond stones DMT are held as the best of the best. I picked up this stone with that high expectation. I also knew that it would cut overly aggressive at first, so it needed a breaking in period. I used a chisel and took care to work the whole stone, stopping to spritz with water occasionally. Right off the bat I noticed several lumps and bumps that caught on the chisel and left deep gouges. After a couple of sessions at 10-15min the center had bedded in nicely, but the perimeter and several spots were still quite coarse.I called DMT for some advice at this point and was told to wash the stone and to use a waterstone to wear on it. So be forewarned you may need a secondary stone to prep your diamond stone.The stone cuts well and is bedding in. But this process is a bit absurd for nice bench stone. I think they should be bedded at the factory and ready to use upon arrival. Minus 2 stars for being a pain to get up and running. 3I love it I get a lot of old tools that need to be put back in shape. I have 3 different grades of the diamond plates from DMT and they work to get the Blades back in shape and sharp 5part of a set If you wish to get down to sharpening and don't want to get into grinding a big booboo out of a chisel hey, this is the solution.It is a way to remove a lot of metal without heating up the steel. If you don't have a slow moving wet grinder and don't want one for money or space reasons this is a good solution. 'Part of a set of solutions to the problem of shaping steel. 5Fast and flat. Perect for coarse work, such as resetting the primary bevel on a hand plane blade, or quickly correcting a damaged edge. 5Excellent price on Amazon for a decent whetstone Firstly thanks to Amazon for excellent purchase experience and excellent price. In fact the best price I could find anywhere online after searching for many days. 5 Stars to Amazon and 3 stars to the DMT factory for a good product.The good bits:*perfectly flat*large (huge in fact)*heavy and stableI like the size and weight of the stone. It is WONDERFUL. It is not necessarily the best choice for grading natural Japanese waterstones because it is too aggressive and leaves deep lines. I use a Fine grade DMT (of this size) to flatten my expensive natural Japanese whetstones. Please remember to wash after every use, otherwise the iron filings rust and leave ugly spots. I recommend just water and not soap. Soap makes it slippery and while working with sharp tools you want good grip and control and safety. I find applying pressure does not help cut metal faster.Bad bits:*The quality is good but should be even better (uneven bedding and some 'spots' which can be felt) so only 3 stars!*Does not cut metal as fast as a natural 'middle' Japanese whetstone.*NO OTHER FAULTS!I still recommend this DMT whetstone, especially the finer grits. It is a fantastic honing tool. However if you are planning to buy it expecting extremely fast stock removal then it does not compare to soft natural whetstones like Shoubu, Nakayama etc or to a wheel based wet grinder like Tormek. In fact DMT is a less effective cheaper alternative to the previous two for reshaping and fast stock removal. Thanks for reading. 3Needs to be broken in This stone cuts quickly like most other diamond products, but should be broken in first with a piece of steel that does not matter if it gets deep scratches in it. 4Extra-coarse diamond hone is a fine purchase! Like all DMT diamond hones that I have owned, this one is superlative. Its aggressive, extra coarse surface works quickly to restore damaged or very blunt edges. I flattened the back of a spoke-shave in a fraction of the time it takes on my DMT coarse surface. My time is valuable and I appreciate how fast the extra-coarse hone does its job. 5Good Value for X-Coarse Comparison to EZ-Lap- diamonds are embedded deeper and do not come loose- price is much cheaper on this sizeComparison to Silicon Carbide 250- no force or pressure is required to remove metal- scratch pattern is deeper, only suitable for work directly on the edgeThe long pattern comes extremely handy for sharpening tools straight from the forge 'for the first time.' Once a good edge has been set that is perfectly flat and aligned, I would see no reason to come back to this aggressive plate. I would much rather prefer to never leave a scratch pattern this deep, however the diamonds do come in handy to set a precise edge. 5Cuts aggressively and flat This product works as indicated in the ad. It cuts aggressively enough to allow removal of nicks and irregularities in a cutting tool in relatively short time. It's also helpful that you don't have to flatten it like you do sharpening stones. I was pleased with the price as well. Usually the coarse grit diamond plates are much higher in price. 5
