    Good Sharpener for Big JobsI bought this large sharpener mostly because of the large knives and meat cleavers I have to sharpen. I bought a VERY impressive Dexter-Russell 9" inch meat cleaver and this long sharpener makes sharpening that monster a not so difficult task. I would have given it 5 stars but since it does not have any kind of "case" is a slight drawback for me. I set it on my plywood topped work bench when I use it (since it is basicly a block of steel) and i'm not too worried about it scuffing up that surface like I would have some concern if I were to be using it on the kitchen counter top. I bought the course model an i bought the fine model. It's a good idea to have both. I also have the DMT sharpeners with the perforations exposing plastic to help with catching the steel from sharpening you blades, but I wanted more surface contact with my blades, so i found these. After using the small "WorkSharp" compact sharpener which has this kind of continuouse diamond surface, (both course and fine) I was happily surprised to discover these sharpeners.4Want sharp knives? This is your answer!Mother recently came over to my house and while preparing meal was wowed by how sharp my knives were. My hunting knives are razor sharp. Thanks DMT!5Turns every blunt tool into a razor sharp cutting device!AWESOME!! worth every cent... although a lower price would be just better!! I bought the coarse and the fine one. I wish I had also the extra coarse.5Works great with my sharpening system.Works great, easy to maintain.5Five Stars FINE! 5This one works very well.IT does not take off much so if you need to really remove some metal get some 220 grit adhesive backed sandpaper and some glass. The coarse stone leaves a nice surface and is great for flattening the backs of chisels5Not Flat ... Not very useful when it bows from end to endI'm not impressed with this stone's flatness ... it isn't.First thing I did upon receiving it was put a metal rule (A precision engineer's rule so it's straight) to the stone.Lengthwise the stone was concaved by about 1/32", that's quite a lot in 11.5 inches.At a cost of $78 I really expected it to be at least close to flat (<10 thousandth's would be acceptable but over three times that No).In all honesty it will probably work Ok for most sharpening but not well for flattening other stones. I had hoped on using it for both.I really was under the impression that DMT was the go-to place for a quality sharpening stone ... Now I wish I hadn't purchased this.I'm not impressed with this $78 stone that bows from one end to the other.2Definitely a FavoriteI have a few of these in differing grits. Dead flat and very durable. Well worth what I paid. The narrow width keeps these focused on my narrower cutters but, other widths and lengths are available to suit your needs. I just use a little water and sometimes a speck of dishwashing liquid for lubricant. Rinse off in the sink and towel dry after use and you're all set for next time.5COARSE - SHARPI was surprised at the weight of the stones - VERY HEAVY - THEY DO NOT MOVE AND DO NOT DROP ONE ON YOUR TOE! So far I am very satisfied with the stones. They were purchased for long term use. I do not expect to ever have to buy another set of stones, nor will I ever have to flatten one, they will never gouge/dish out like a water stone.5Wow! Buy this one!I would rate this a medium grit though DMT calls it coarse but it removes metal easily. Can clean up an mildly dull edge with 4-5 strokes per side. Very heavy, I place it on our quartz countertop at the edge on a dish towel and can sharpen 4-5 knives in < 2 minutes to where they will slice a soft tomato with ease.5Excellent Sharpening ToolThis is an excellent sharpening tool. I have water stones, which constantly need to be flattened to sharpen properly. This stone is flat, and stays flat. The large surface is important if you use a jig to hold the chisel or blade at a consistent angle. (The Veritas MK II Honing Guide is what I use, and it is excellent.) I purchased the course stone. I already have a 6" fine, but I am going to purchase the fine and extra fine in this larger size. Keeping your edges sharp is critical for woodworking, and this large stone size, and the fact you don't need to flatten it, gives more time to work on projects, not sharpening tools.5
