Customer Reviews

Inspect for Damage I rated this with two stars because it has a significant defect, two in fact. There are two dings in the substrate that create a high and low spot. I inspected the packaging thoroughly and it was pristine. These dings can easily be seen with the naked eye so that leaves me wondering about the quality control. These stones are not cheap and my expectations are high for such an item. I do like how it sharpens but with the defects I am left with nearly a third of the stone unusable.Buy these from a local supplier and inspect them before purchase. 2Play the lottery? Review of 1200 grit extra fine as I think they lump these reviews and you don't always know which grit is being referenced. First one had a rust spot and a bubble in the surface, I returned it and had a new one in a couple days. That one had a completely different surface. It was a mix of 1200 and much larger grit not at all uniform like the previous one grit wise. Sharpened with it and the surface started wearing away. Not at all like the normal diamond wear in, but like a defective hone. Returned it.DMT has a quality control problem. If you get a good one they are good. I suggest if you want one, you get in a car and drive to a retailer that lets you look at them before purchase or be ready to take your chances on the return lottery. 1You'll never use stones again For some reason I thought this was going to be a similar size to the 400 grit diamond sharpener I'd bought from Bunnings and love, but it turned out to be significantly larger. Easily large enough for all my plane blades. Diamond sharpeners are a joy to use after years using stones. They don't clog, and and keep on working. They also stay flat, which is a huge bonus as it is a royal PITA flattening stones. I found this Extra Fine sharpener a bit worrying to start with, as it was scratching my chisels, but after some use, it bedded in and works fine. I have since read advice to this affect on Rob Cosmans' YouTube channel. (Check him out btw. the best real world advice on sharpening I have come across, and I have watched a 'ton' of videos on the subject). It came out a bit expensive by the time it was converted to NZ dollars and postage was added, but I intend buying a larger grit DMT sharpener just for the size, so I must be happy with it. 5The fine grain of the diamond is easy to gouge or ... The diamond media was not spread along the edges of the plate. There was about an eigth inch skip along the edges. I should have sent it back but thought I could use it. The fine grain of the diamond is easy to gouge or scratch off the plate. You have to be careful. It works well for fine polishing and micro-bevels. It doesn't need lubricant or water to work. I wipe it often with paper towel when using and wash with soap and water after a lot of use. This does make a difference. 3Heed The Negative Reviews - These Are Absolute Garbage Ordered this stone as well as a coarse variant since I was getting tired of tearing through sandpaper. Was assured that these were the absolute best. Read the reviews and figured those stating they were not great were just being too hard to please or were doing something wrong. I can definitely say, at least in my experience, that this stone is trash. The coarse worked fine and as expected. The extra fine wound up maring all of my cutting irons like sand on plexiglass. Over $50 for something that can be bested by a $5 pack of auto detailing sandpaper. 1 star because I cannot rate it lower and at least it will serve as a paperweight or a door stop. Paperwork states that the company stands behind their product and that "any product found to be defective will be replaced free of charge - it's that simple!" They then proceed to not provide any means to actually have their customers hold them to their own policy. Once I recoup the wasted funds from this stone I'll just go with what my gut told me from the start and just get a EZE Lap or Trend diamond plate. Delivery may take a month, but at least the reviews seem decent and their "customer service" isn't a black hole from which no light escapes. 1Highly recommended I bought my first dmt diamond sound a couple of years ago, and I have since phased out all of my old traditional stones. They are always flat, cut quickly, and leave a great edge. With the exception of a leather strop or the occasional polish on a translucent Arkansas, I don't use anything else anymore. I have five different dmt products, and I have had zero issues with quality control or longevity. 5Great quality, extreme convenience Is it weird to like the chore of sharpening? Used in combination with the fine grit (I have the inexpensive version with the open spaces, says Smith's but probably DMT) you get afantastic edge. In addition, I was using a 1000 grit stone, soaking it in water, etc. Now I go from the Smiths (600 grit) to the D8E (1200) to my 6000 grit stone (if needed), and it's a very smooth progression. I can get a fantastic edge. The real benefit of the DMT is actually the quick set up and clean up. Yes the surface is very effective at sharpening, and yes, it's extremely flat and can be used as the standard to judge all other flatness. But the simplicity of taking a knife to the garage, squirting a little water on the D8E, and then rubbing the knife back and forth, or making circles, or going in just one direction, or whatever you like while you think of all the fanatical opinions on which is the best way to do this. And after a little while, you have achieved "sharp". Wipe with a paper towel and you're done. Completely done.I could have sharpened a knife to easy tomato cutting in the time it took to read this. 5I returned the first one and the replacement arrived as the same or even worse condition. No more tooling mark on the replacemen Received the first one. It had obvious tooling mark (maybe from a flat cutter/surface mill), nicks, and dings on the surface. The surface defects caught the knife blade as I sharpen. I returned the first one and the replacement arrived as the same or even worse condition. No more tooling mark on the replacement one. But, it has more dings and nicks. I tried to sharpen two knifes on it and hope if the surface condition will "wear in/ break in". No luck. It is very disappointing since DMT is supposed to be the best manufacture in this industry. There is definitely something wrong with their quality control. 1FANTASTIC SHARPENING These DMT 8 inch continuous diamond plates are fantastic. 8x3 inches and 1/3 of an inch thick, these are seriously heavy duty.I bought the coarse, fine, extra fine, and extra extra fine 8x3'sthey will remain flat, they sharpen fastthey are low maintenance (only need rinse and dry or occasional brushing)the available grits meet any almost any concievable needunder normal use will last foreverI bought them primarily to sharpen my kitchen knives and a few tools in the garage. My current knife set is some older chinese made no name set. i have a couple of extra knives like a lower level JA Henckle Santouku and utility knife, a large kithcen aid xhef's knife, and a ja henckle pro 6 in chef. This set of sharpening stones very quickly and easily put an awesomey scary sharp edge on all of them, even though some were previously neglected or sharpend with cheap gimicky sharpeners. dont be scared of them being to aggressive. you only need pay attention to what your doing, dont apply a lot of pressure, and using the xtra fine and extra extra fine really polish the edge very well. 5My DMT was a POS 10 or so years ago, I had a complete set of 6 inch DMT Dia-Sharp stones that were stolen. They were top-rate quality and I missed them, so I decided to upgrade to the 8 inch set.Obviously the quality of the Dia-Sharp products from DMT has diminished over the years. This stone was horrid! The surface texture was very inconsistent with overly large diamonds scattered across the plate much like spatter from a bad welding job.A section near the edge was completely devoid of diamonds. Nothing but bare metal.I contacted DMT directly and was told that I would have to break in the stones to remove the larger diamonds. I asked for the specific procedure to do this and was provided the same. I was told to move a scrap piece of metal lightly across the service in a figure 8 pattern until it smoothed out.Tried this three times for ten minutes each time with absolutely no improvement noted. Re-contacted customer service from DMT and was asked for pictures. I provided them the same pictures that are shown here. The customer service department apologized and told me that sometimes things like this slip out . And was advised to contact Amazon for a replacement. I started a return with Amazon customer service which is phenomenal by the way, and they shipped me a new stone before I even packaged the old one to send it back. It arrived in pretty much the exact same condition as the old one.I was upset because I really wanted a good quality set of diamond stones for my sharpening endeavors. My favorite stone is a small one that I keep in a leather pouch in my toolbox. So I went to get that stone to see what the manufacturers name was on it.It s an EZE-Lap stone. Did some digging on the Internet and found the exact same size stones from them. So I ordered a set. They all arrived in perfect condition with no issues whatsoever.Don t waste your money with DMT.Just order the EZE-Lap stones and be done with it. The quality is night and day 1
