Customer Reviews

Get the D-Link DAP-1860 insteadStarted work in a building which had insanely terrible cellular connection and the company would not let me use my personal laptop on the corporate network. Was able to utilize this device from a window to connect to a public wifi outside (that was not reachable from my desk), onto a separately named WPA2 network that this created. HOWEVER, the unit would crash every 2-3 days from overheating. Would NOT recommend. Get the upgraded DAP-1860 instead. The other extenders I tried:NETGEAR Nighthawk Mesh X4S (EX7500) Next was this Netgear. This one had a superior interface as well as having this Fastlane technology which would maintain a separate wifi band to bridge the connections thereby removing the 50% speed penalty found on all other extenders (including this D-Link). The problem was that no matter what I tried, my iPhone 8 and my coworker's iPhone 7 would not be able to connect to the extender's network. My laptop would be able to connect fine so there was something up with the firmware or iPhone compatibility. I tried 2 of these units before moving onto the D-Link DAP-1860.D-Link Wi-Fi Range Extender (DAP-1860) This D-Link was able to connect to the open wifi in the same manner as the earlier D-Link. But since this unit was noticeably larger (and definitely better built than the cheap DAP-1520), it never faced the overheating problems. I have gone 3 weeks so far without any crashes. I'm sure it will be fine for a while.2I would rate zero stars if I could. Unit setup wizard totally failed time and again and again. The 'Chat' lady was very kind and passed me on to a Dlink 'technician'. He took control of my computer and finally proclaimed that I needed to spend $150 to get one of his experts to fix all the problems with my network causing the range extender to fail to connect to the router. The fact that I could not understand what he was saying half the time due to his strong accent is somewhat irrelevant. When I refused to be coerced into spending the $150 we disconnected. I will be returning the extender to Amazon as it failed to even operate as expected. 1Over delivers for the priceI would give this product 10 stars if I could. Set-up was very easy using the free app on my iPhone; just plug it in, connect to the device by selecting the device SSID and using the password printed on the back of the unit. Answer the questions and press done to reboot the device. The whole process took less than 5 minutes. Now I admit I downloaded and read the instructions before it arrived, so I was able to quickly go through the process. Now I read several of the 1 star reviews before ordering and I saw a lot of complaints that is did nothing, or stopped working after a short period of time. I think this might be because people use the same SSID and password for the extended network band as they used for the router. Then, when they use a client device (cell phone, printer, etc.) they mistakenly connect to the router and not the D-Link Range Extender. Then when they get to the area of the building that they need to connect to the closer D-Link, they are still connected to the far away router and they get poor connection. To add to the confusion, when you leave the house and then come back the client (e.g., cell phone) will auto connect to the first network it recognises and it may be the router and not the extender. Just an idea.My extender is so good, that the 2.4 GHz band covers every square inch of my 2000 sq. ft. home from basement to 2nd floor (it is located on the 2nd floor, the router is on the first floor). That's amazing since my router won't do that (which is why I got the extender in the first place!). I took my iPad for a walk and I was over 100 feet away from my house before I dropped to 3 bars, and I got about 150 feet away before I lost signal. Now my house has walls of plaster and lath, which contain a metal net to hold the plaster. That means my house has a metal barrier that makes it extra tough for wireless to pass through, so all in all I am impressed with the performance of this device. Pretty good for $19.I also checked online reviews. This device has been around since 2014, and the last firmware update was 2015. Every reputable reviewer gave this device a great review and recommended it highly. And back then it sold for about $100! Go ahead and order it. Read the instructions, use a different SSID from your router to be sure you are connected to the D-Link and enjoy whole house WiFi. You won't be disappointed.5Good unit, but setup rocky until I found D-Link's mobile app that they seem to want to keep a secretThe DAP-1520 / AC750 range extender seems to work well for me so far, for my simple situation. I would give it 5 stars except that setup was not smooth. D-Link has a MOBILE SETUP APP that worked well for me but they don't advertise the app at all. The device comes with a simplistic quick install guide. At the end of that guide there s a completely inconspicuous note telling you there s a full manual online. Only the full manual tells you about the app. There are three setup methods for the DAP-1520- Using the WPA button- Using the web interface (from a web browser on a computer)- Using the D-Link setup app on an iPhone, etc.The first two methods failed for me, while the third method (the app) was successful. I think the first method failed because my base station's WPA button doesn't do what it should. To install the DAP-1520, the first thing I did was put the unit into an outlet near my WiFi base station (which is an ActionTec WCB3000N WiFi Extender). Pressing the WPA button on the base station (for several seconds) and then walking over to the DAP-1520 and pressing its WPA button would not create a connection. As I said, this appears to be an ActionTec problem. Then I tried using the web browser (Firefox on Windows 7). None of the recommended URLs could connect to the DAP-1520. I tried http://dlinkapp.local. I tried the URL on the configuration card - http://dlinkappxxxx.local where xxxx is specific to the unit. I tried the IP address 192.168.0.50 as indicated in the quick install manual. My ActionTec s IP address is 192.168.1.18.Finally I found the iPhone app. It found the DAP-1520 via WiFi and walked me quickly through the setup. It worked quite well. Also, the quick install guide also says the MAC ID of the unit is on a label on the side of the unit. It s not. It s printed on the carton.4won't show up as available wireless network1.paired w/ main router via WSD; got solid green light2. won't show up with the SSID provided3. checked web browser link; nothing4. reset it to factory settings5. paired w/ main router via WSD; got solid green light6. won't show up with the SSID provided7. printed return label and shipped it backThey probably think that people won't ship it back considering the price is "only" 23$. Also, they advertise it w/ reviews from 2018, whereas the technology is from 2014. WRONG!Done with this, going all in into mesh network. I rather spend 300$ on sth that works ootb......1Set up was pretty easy (the steps can take a little bit of ...I did (almost too much) research on a solution to be able to cut the cable and switch to an online "cable" service via Roku because we only have DSL Internet, but I really wanted to see if I could figure out how to make this work. Before this purchase the Roku had worked, but only with a "fair" or "good" signal strength connection and the online TV service we tried came in, but things came up slowly, weren't clear, and paused during broadcast/play. Although this is labeled just as a WiFi extender it made a SIGNIFICANT difference in the power of my WiFi at the other end of my condo (the modem is in our office area at one end; the TV at the other). Set up was pretty easy (the steps can take a little bit of waiting time--if it doesn't find the connection the first time, just run the wizard again). I set up both 2.4 GHz and 5 and I opted to use the 5 for only the TV--just to try and cut down on any other interference. I had also moved my modem up higher in the office (that alone improved a bit of signal strength as shown via a Speedtest.net before-and-after comparison in the room), but this WiFi extender is what really did the trick. At first, partly because of the guides for placement, I thought I should try to be closer to the modem--maybe just past halfway from the modem and slightly closer to the TV. It helped, but not enough. Then I plugged it into a wall in our front hallway because the TV was just on the other side and that was the turning point. Signal strength for the Roku then came up as "excellent" and now things come up faster on the TV and we are using our HD antenna and online service to watch shows. I turned in the cable box and we're officially cable free. :) I will note that my condo is not large--so even putting the extender at the other end near the TV itself doesn't mean it's super far (4 rooms away), but my purpose was to get the Roku help and it wanted it close by so that was my guide in placement.5Total Disappointment and Waste of Hours of TimeI purchased a top of the Line D-Link AC3200 Ultra Tri-Band Wi-Fi Router and purchased DAP 1520 and 1620 extenders for better coverage. The set up appeared to be easy; however the extender dropped the wifi connection over and over. I tried to re-set it to factory settings and to configure it via the web browser, d-link app, and WPS settings. After wasting hours of time, I finally returned them. There are plenty of other options on the market and I suggest that you skip D-Link extenders. On the other hand the AC3200 Router is a Beast and works great!1Beware of undocumented set-upOnce set up, appears to be working well. Setup was maddening as the instructions talk about a blinking green light but there are in fact two different rates of blinking green light, one blinking quickly and one flashing slowly. I don't know which is which or what the "other" flashing rate means, but once I deduced that the green light can blink at different speeds to indicate different things, I was able to connect. (I just used brute force reasoning: if it didn't connect at one speed of blinking, I tried again and connected when it was blinking at a different speed.)If it weren't for this issue - or if the two speeds of blinking we discussed in the instructions - then it would deserve four stars. It is very small, provides a good signal considering no external antennae, but like many extenders it does disconnect momentarily from time to time, which drives my smartspeaker crazy. Red ring and Alexs@ announces "I'm having trouble connecting to the Internet" even though everything else in the house is connected. To be fair, the competitor's unit this replaced would go to sleep and had to be rebooted every few weeks, so it's a definite improvement.3Doesn't work 10 months later. It worked ok for about 6-7 months, then has been rebooting itself randomly and for the most part doesn't work. The initial set-up was fine and I could connect without a problem, but it stopped working normally even though I haven't moved it (and it's in line of sight of the router, with approx 20-25 feet and no walls in between). I can connect to the extended network--sometimes--but there's no internet connection. Sometimes I can't even connect to the extended network even when the SSID is showing; it says I have the wrong password (even though it worked yesterday and I haven't changed it?). No firmware updates available either. Right now it has a solid orange light but the current status on the config page shows a green check between my router and the device. The D-Link technical support website is pretty useless too. (How hard is it to make a table that says, if it's blinking orange, that means X; if it's a constant orange light, that means Y?) I've tried all sorts of combinations of rebooting/resetting both this device and my router (which has no issues besides not being able to reach the back of my apartment) to no avail. Pretty much garbage at this point, less than a year later. I'll be trying to submit a warranty claim, but I don't really have my hopes up.2This device showed up in a list of five best wifi repeatersThis device showed up in a list of five best wifi repeaters. I needed a repeater as our Roku just barely works on the signal from our Ruckus wifi transmitter located in the opposite corner of the house. After two hours I finally got it to work - it does not play nice with the Ruckus as the Ruckus does not have the same synchronization process as a router. I ditched the Ruckus and used the Motorola cable modem. That worked, or at least it connected. However, this device is so weak that even when it is only FIVE FEET from the Roku, the Roku reports a weak signal. The signal from the distant Ruckus was actually better than the signal from the D-Link. It's cheap piece of junk. Don't purchase it.1Simple setup BUT requires Patience!I wanted a device that didn't require a lot of set up. The directions were seemingly straightforward BUT the sequence had to be followed and took time; i.e. wait for the LED light to change indicating that the unit has synced with the modem. I wasted a lot of time and got frustrated trying to hurry the process.Once the device is synced to the modem it doesn't have to go through the process again if you move a different electrical outlet. My router is in a 2nd floor closet and I use an iPad downstairs in the kitchen. Wifi is occasionally weak or spotty, but I also didn't want to go to a lot of expense.I had to move the d-link around to get the iPad to consistently link but it appears to be working. I am not concerned about speed or capacity just connectivity.5
