Customer Reviews

Works with continuous rope sensor cable I was initially disappointed that this successor to the DCH-S160 uses a sensor probe that only detects water at a single point. I've had slow leaks that did not spread very far, but over time, they incurred substantial damage, and this type of sensor is very unlikely to detect that kind of leak unless you've lucky, and the sensor happens to be where that small, recurring puddle is. However, I had excellent luck using Honeywell's continuous rope sensor (it detects water that touches any portion of the cable) as an extension for the old DCH-S160, and Honeywell's newer extension cable for their Lyric detector uses a 3.5mm jack, just like the new D-Link, so I gambled and bought both. Jackpot! The Honeywell cable works perfectly with this new sensor. The part # is RCHWES4:https://www.amazon.com/Lyric-Wi-Fi-Freeze-Detector-Sensor/dp/B01J7EVB1G/I bought this to detect any leaks in my hot water heater. I was able to arrange the 4 foot long Honeywell sensor rope in a half circle around the base of my water heater (it's up against a foundation wall on the side where no sensor cable is), thus absolutely guaranteeing an alert if there is any leak. The Honeywell sensors daisy-chain, so you could get two to encircle something completely, or to run cable under a kitchen sink, dishwasher, and refrigerator. You could also use common 3.5 mm headphone extensions between sensors, if needed. And you can plug the included D-Link point sensor into the end, if you thought you it would be useful. That's the good news. Unfortunately, this new sensor does not work with the original app that monitors/configures the old DCH-S160 sensor, and the new app doesn't work with the old sensor. So if you're buying this to expand on an existing system, you have to run two different apps. Also, configuration as documented is impossible--thankfully, reviewer TW here points out the fix: turn off mobile data (Airplane mode, then re-enable wifi is the easiest way) before setting up.Finally, the app claims that this sensor doesn't work with IFTTT, even though the box lists that prominently (as does D-Link's site). If you go to IFTTT, you can configure alerts via SMS or email, which is an excellent backup to push notifications. It's just annoying that the app is so broken.I did test the sensor after it had gone into power-save mode, and it alerts instantly (I left it for 24 hours after initial setup), so that problem--as reported by one of the 1-start reviews--has been fixed. The sensor also automatically updated it's firmware later, which is nice.In the end, it does what I need it to, but it was frustrating getting there. 4Will NOT stay connected to Wi-Fi... I bought this with high hopes. This D-Link Wi-Fi Water Leak Sensor and Alarm will not stay connected to my house wifi - not to my main network or to my 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz subnetworks. Once it loses the connection it never regains it. This appears to be a very common problem with this sensor and also with and the Honeywell model that seems to be popular. And I spoke with D-Link, who did get it to work once, but it won't reconnect. There goes 6 hours of my life I won't get back. 1Won't reconnect after power outage This thing is a waste of money. It does do a good job of sensing water and alarming but there are products on Amazon that will do that for $15. The problem is the wifi connection and the volume of the alarm. After a power outage, this does not reconnect on its own. I just arrived home from a 7-day vacation and when I walked in the house I noticed that my digital clocks were flashing indicating that the power had been out. I couldn't hear the sensor alarming until I went downstairs and was within 20 feet of the unit. My water heater had sprung a leak while I was gone and set the alarm off but I hadn't been notified because it didn't reconnect after the power outage. Thankfully I have a floor drain next to the water heater so there was no damage. If you're looking to spend $60 for a water sensor that you can hear if you're already standing in the water then this is the one for you. If you'd like to be notified on your phone then I'd look for something else. 1Easy peasy Easy set up using D Link app (free). Work well sending push notifications via app to my phone. Next test will be longevity of the device and battery life. According to info, device will send a notification when batteries should be replaced. 5Works Beautifully --- if you can get it to work at all My God, I just wasted several hours of my life setting this device up -- and I am just absolutely pissed that I will never get that time back.Should have known better. I don't generally like D-LINK products. They are always complicated to set up and not always reliable.I finally got this working, but I had to race back to my computer and write a review to send a clear warning to those of you considering purchasing this device. Sadly, I think by the end of this review, you are going to end up buying it anyway. There's really little other choices out there. So let me backtrack...I built a very expensive home theater in my basement, which is located adjacent to a room that contains a water heater. Over 10 years ago, prior to building that home theater, the old water heater burst and deposited gallons of water across my basement floor. It was complete havoc to clean up. It completely ruined the floor and furniture.I have always wanted to carpet the basement and build my dream theater. I never did it because I knew that one day, I faced having the replacement water heater failing and the same disaster repeating itself.I went ahead and carpeted the basement earlier this year. Added a projector and expensive recliners.I figured, if I could safeguard that water heater, I may be able to head off the next disaster. The first step was purchasing a flood stop device that automatically turns off the water valve if water is detected.Next, I searched for a device that would sense a leak and send me a notification to my iPhone. I was surprised to see that there weren't many options available. Some devices were very expensive. Some devices got awful reviews. The D-Link DCH-S160 sort of fell in the middle of being affordable and having some decent (while not overwhelming) positive reviews. After reading all the Amazon reviews, as you are doing now, I knew that I was possibly facing an uphill climb in attempting to install this device. However, I am very confident in my abilities as a tech guy. I can essentially hook up anything that involves WiFi and iPhone communication.Wow --- did I ever meet my match with this water sensor. I can't begin to tell you how close I was to boxing this up and sending it back to Amazon. It took me two hours to get this device working correctly. None of the problems were related to not knowing how to properly set this up, but the inability of the sensor and the iPhone app to communicate correctly. In theory, this should have taken 5 minutes to set up. I also purchased the D-Link SIREN and I had that working within minutes. With the D-Link water sensor, you essentially set it up using the iPhone (or other smartphone) app, You download the app, create an account, and add a device. Adding a device is as easy as scanning the Qcode on the enclosed card. The first step is then having the app communicate with the D-Link modem. Once that is done and you enter the supplied PIN code, you connect to your home network.Really, I had no problem with this. That's sort of the easy part. The mess is what follows. I went through dozens of attempts to obtain the new firmware I was instructed to download. Most all those attempts resulted in the download freezing at about 25%. Each time I had to reset the D-Link and start all over again. During that process, sometimes the D-Link connected to my WiFi network. Sometimes it didn't.How did I finally connect? With the kind of persistence that most people wouldn't give a product. I just kept trying over and over and over again, resetting the device and hoping that the firmware would fully download. I just happened to get lucky on of the last attempts I made. The most important piece of advice I can give you is when the app tells you to "reboot your device," to unplug the D-LINK, and keep it unplugged for about 20 seconds. If you plug it in too soon, it doesn't reboot as it should. And you know what? None of this is included in the instructions. I didn't even know how to reboot this device until I read an Amazon review saying that it's a simple unplug action. Really, with a button on the D-Link device, rebooting could mean anything.I was not able to rest the D-LINK atop the water heater because the sensor cord is a little too short. I just bought an extension cable and let the device hang on a pipe.Once the iPhone app sensed the connection of the D-LINK sensor, I put the device to a test...I filled a bowl with water and placed the sensor in it. The D-LINK immediately began beeping. It activated my D-LINK SIREN and I received an immediate notification to my iPhone. So, once you get this working, it works BEAUTIFULLY!A couple suggestions...First, get the D-LINK siren. It is an absolute must buy purchase. You will not hear the alarm going off in your basement, but you can plug the siren anywhere in your home and it is certainly loud enough to wake you from a sleep.Secondly, for iPhone users, go into SETTINGS -> NOTIFICATIONS and look for the MYDLINK HOME settings. Under alert style, choose ALERTS (the third option). This ensures that the alert stays on the screen instead of suddenly disappearing out of view.I would love to give the D-LINK a 5-star review. It deserves such for what it claims to do. However, the fact that it's going to take some of you hours to get set up and working correctly means that it's not going to get the rating it ultimately deserves. 3App connectivity is potentially devistating I have downgraded my rating due to an incident. For some reason, the app deleted my password or logged me out. This means that I didn't get the notification that my fish tank was overflooded and that the tank was allowed to overflood for about 11 hours. When I came in the next day and saw the moderate-to-severe damage, I wondered why I didn't get a notification. When I went to the app, it required me to sign in. I did and noticed that the system detected water 11 hours prior. Had I gotten that notification, I could have saved about $2000 in repairs. We had to clean the carpets in several rooms (water seeped under the walls) and we had to do serious repairs to the drywall on three walls. I do not recommend this product. We intend to buy another product and wish I could send this one back. 1Frustrating set up that isn't in the app or documentation, great otherwise After a rodent ate through the sensor on our old D-Link water sensor, we pre-ordered this as a replacement. Having it be battery powered is a nice feature, though powered would have suited our needs as well. While the water sensor detected water quickly and pushed a notification almost instantly to my phone, the set up was a nightmare, as they don't tell you one critical piece of information in either the app during setup, nor the documentation that came with the unit. That being, when you are going through the set up within the app to connect it to your wifi, you MUST turn your cellular data OFF, or it will never fully connect either normally or via WPS via the router. After almost being ready to return it as defective, I scoured the Internet and finally found an article that gave that as a suggestion. After turning off cellular data, it connected normally and all is well. 4Won't connect to IPhone 6 Plus app provided I consider myself quite technologically capable and have automated half of my home already. After spending about an hour and a half trying to get this device to connect with my iPhone 6 Plus, I am boxing it up and sending it back. I followed the directions to the T roughly 30 times and have even tried all 3 (yes I have 3) of my wifis with no luck. The device connects to the wifi just fine, but flat out refuses to be seen by the app. If someone can somehow tell me something I have missed before tomorrow I might actually keep the thing. But for now it's a paperweight awaiting it's return. 1PRODUCT DOES NOT WORK AS ADVERTISED - DESIGN FLAW!!! After 20 seconds, when the green LED goes out, the unit goes into sleep mode to conserve battery life. One problem, if exposed to water after the initial 20 seconds, there's an audible alert only - no wi-fi communication - no email notification - no IFTTT notification. So, if your water problem occurs in the first 20 seconds, then great it works as intended and you will be notified, afterwards it's just a "dumb" water sensor with an audible tone - NO OTHER NOTIFICATION WHATESOEVER. I tested it several times before contacting D-Link customer service. They responded with (direct quote):"After you reset the device and set it up again, the LED light turned green > then went off after 20 seconds. It's just normal because the device is on > "sleep mode". I would also like to inform you that the device will not > notify you if it's on "sleep mode" and we were already aware of it. DLink > team is currently working on a latest firmware that will solve the issue."I've requested an expected date for the firmware fix from D-Link and received no response. THIS PRODUCT SHOULD NOT BE ON THE MARKET UNTIL THEY FIX THIS. 1wont stay connected. Look elsewhere for a solution as this is not one. Does not work as advertised. Boy you ain t kidding on installation. Following the stuffer sheet directions got me no where. The app guided install, beside contradicting the quick install stuffer sheet was better when you used the scan code on the back of the devise. Otherwise it asks for a password for the devise when none was given. And no mention of only working on 2.4 ghz WiFi anywhere. Severe, severe, severe oversight. Not a mention in any of the literature or even on the box or the sales add in amazon. If it wasn t for the Q&A here I d be lost and it would have been sent back. I now get notifications but no emails. I had thought I would since they asked for it in the account set up. I will pose the question in hopes of a timely response. On the positives I like the battery level indicator on the app. Negatives, when you make a change in the settings of the app, it tries to save it. The spinning wheel goes round and round and never completes its task. Seems like it s not very well thought out in its execution of the mundane settings. I hope it works better than the setup and the setting menu.UPDATED 6/13/19 ===>. Like others stated, it won t stay connected. Wish I would have listened. Buy at your own risk. But I m very disappointed in its performance, or lack there of. It beeps to let you know there is water, but it won t let my phone or ipad know via the app like it did the first few days. I sure wish I would have figured this out before the return period expired. Now it s just an expensive noise maker that i could have gotten from amazon or another big box store for $10.All my original notes above still hold and now with no alerts at all, it s pretty worthless. 1
