Customer Reviews

Five StarsNo more stone flattening! 'Nuff said...5diamond abrasive wore offThe abrasive material on this item wore off after sharpening a dozen, not so dull wood chisels. The sharpener is now more smooth to the touch than my 6000 grit stone. Very disappointed. These are advertised as long lasting and are marketed as premium products. The window to return this product closed after only one month which again is disappointing if this product is supposed to have a long life. Try another brand before buying DMT.1HmmmMine came with several raised imperfections in the working surface that grabbed the knife's edge, precluding a smooth stroke and flattening a small section of the edge. I touched up several lesser quality knives which seemed to diminish the problem somewhat. Over time, I expect the imperfections will become less and less of an issue.I would have hoped that DMT's QC would have caught this problem. I sent them an email requesting a solution, but never heard back. The size of the hone is excellent, even for large knives. It's made of steel and very heavy. I like that. If it weren't for the imperfections and the lack of response to my query, I'd have given the product 5 stars.3Flat and sharpen wellIs good to use, very flat and sharpens quite well with my Damascus knife5Quality sharpening surfaceAmazing, found this has been great for sharpening kitchen knives to woodworking tools and more. High quality with some weight to it. Could have gone with the smaller 8" but happy I went big and got the 10" sharpeners.5Five StarsI'm sharpening everything in my shop with a series of these.5but the DMT stones surely are among the best. No mess and daily wear with the need ...There are many ways to achieve sharp tools, but the DMT stones surely are among the best. No mess and daily wear with the need to flatten often (as with waterstones, of which I've used the older softer ones, and the newer harder ones), and these DMT products cut faster and better than traditional oil stones.5Very very excellent bench "stone"The "stone" is actually a block of aluminum billet with one surface having the diamond surface applied. What? you say Al is a light metal? Sure. Ever picked up a 4" x 10" by 3/8" piece? Not so light! If you have a flat surface available (such as a scrap piece of cut & polished marble (1/2" thick), you really don't need a holder. Just use some non-slip material between the DMT and the surface. Even a wet paper towel will work. The DMT comes with 4 non-slip rubber feet but I am cautious about only using 4. AL at this thickness will deform slightly with pressure and I'd rather be safe than sharpen a plane iron with a convex shape. 8 or 12 feetsies should be OK with a 10" stone. Or just rely on your flat marble!Yikes! 4" wide! The alternative is 2.5" wide and a little longer. 2.5" is getting a bit skimpy for some of my plane blades. I'd rather have the greater width. And my long spoke shave blades can be tidied up by going across the narrow dimensions.And...amazingly...you won't ever have to flatten these puppies! That's a big time saver, as I usually flatten my water stones after about 10 minutes of use.I'll also recommend Veritas's MK.II Honing Guide. Makes irons and chisels SCARY SHARP! My fingers prove it!Nice products!5Five StarsNICE AND BIG DOES THE JOB5DMT = Does Mean ThingsPaying >$100 should have resulted in surface being level/"smooth"/consistent--NOT! Riddled with high "diamond-dust" spots, which should have been eliminated at the factory. Yes, diamond-dust is quite hard, very easy to dull/nick extremely sharp, thin blade, in a single pass.New variation on vaporware/dreamware, but instead of troubleshooting it and reporting back to MS after blogging & chatting, spreading-the-word, we want you solve the problem yourself by using cheap knives to smooth-out "diamond" surface....but don't rub two DMT's together--surely that'll void whatever warranty is implied/suggested/intimated/alluded to, or otherwise hinted. It'll be "a while" before my Shun Edo knife is allowed near this thing. My goal was/.(is?) that the surface will stay flat, outlast--and not wear like--stones....Hope springs eternal.....as long as I'm on the subject of DMT....In re: their line of "polka-dot"/interrupted-surface/discontinuous sharpeners:I own two "interrupted" surface sharpeners. They are touted by DMT as keeping the surface "cleaner". They are cheaper because there is less diamond-material on the surface. My experience is that the holes allow the blade to be nicked. My contention is that the surface is not completely flat/continuous/smooth around every hole; no problem using them on my axes, hatchets, hoes, mattocks, machetes, spades, et al.. When I'm sharpening a $250 knife and it picks up a high--or low--spot that stops the blade, I'm a little exasperated. Not only may it take another 10-20 mins. to smooth out, it shortens the life span of the blade. Why would I want to grind down a Shun Edo knife more than is necessary to obtain a razor edge? Correct--I don't.The Principle of the (likely) man-made/synthetic/artificial "diamonds" is very persuasive. I want all 4-5 of mine to work as I envision them--with flat-flat, level, continuous surfaces. If you have an old meat-cleaver, use that until most/all of the surface is smooth--rub it with your fingers when it's new & unused, again when you've worked on it an hour. If it isn't noticeably smoother on that portion utilized after an hour, the metal has not been making contact with the diamond surface. My contention is this issue is a quality control matter. I am NOT the only person to point this out to other owners/potential purchasers. If there were other sharpeners available that didn't have to be worked-on to make them work properly, I'd be in line for them. Possibly there are; I have only so much time.Hear me, DMT: this isn't a pair of shoes. The break-in period for these sharpeners should be negligible--AND SHOULD NOT DO DAMAGE TO THE BLADE A PERSON IS PROPERLY TRYING TO SHARPEN ON FIRST USAGE OF THE SHARPENER.My XX-Fine continuous sharpener is so flat & smooth, DMT has an arrow on the side to inform which-side-is-which (only one working side). If DMT can do it for the XX-Fine, methinks it can be done for the less-fine sharpeners.Let's go, DMT!. Get on our side--we are your customers!!!3
