Customer Reviews

Inferior to other 600/1200 diamond stones. This items has a nice solid metal base but it's inferior to EZE-Lap which also has a 600 / 1200 grit diamond stone. The glaring problem with this stone is that it's not very uniform. There are big pieces of diamond on it which catches the cutting edge and puts a big dent on it. EZE-Lap has just as much diamond coverage plus it's much more uniform. This item is almost useless to me because I use it for super small hobby knives and micro chisels. So a dent on the cutting edge is problematic. For use on larger knives or flattening out whetstones, it should not be a problem.Picture is at about 30X magnification. 4 large diamond sticking out of the extra fine surface. 2The only stone you ll ever need! Quality - [8/10] (ends have visible marks from when it was cut with a bandsaw)Feel - [10/10] This stone just feels like a quality product. Also, it is very responsive and feels great when sharpeningFunctionality - [10/10] The fine side of this stone is rated at 25 micron (~800 grit) which is great because it can remove a good amount of material fairly quickly while providing a very workable edge.I sharpened my Para 3 in S110V steel (known for being extremely difficult to sharpen) in about 10 minutes. The knife was dull (hardly shaving any hair) and after using the fine side and stropping on 5micron and 2.5micron diamond paste, the edge would easily shave. After that i tried out the extra-fine side; which worked amazingly. The extra-fine side left the knife hair-popping sharp straight off of the stone! (I used a push-pull method to form a burr on both sides then forward strokes alternating sides each stroke to remove the burr). After the stone i brought the knife to my 2.5 and 0.5 micron diamond paste strops and the edge was mind-blowing. It will shave hair without any pressure (just the weight of the knife) and even cut a single piece of hair in half while it is hanging. In conclusion, this stone is excellent. It works for establishing bevels as well as taking them to shaving sharp. This stone is truly the only stone you ll ever need. And if it ll cut s110v in ~15 minutes... It ll cut any steel for any knife, axe, chisel, plane, anything.Thank you for reading, hopefully this was helpful. 5good but not great. don't last forever. I have purchased 3 DMT stones and one waterstone in the past 10 months.I started woodworking school 10 months ago, and have sharpened, lapped (the back), and honed the equivalent of 10 chisels and 5 plane blades. (equivalent because of do-overs). I already owned one DMT stone and 2 waterstones.the DMT stones are flat, faster to clean and neater than using water stones but I did not find them significantly faster during the actual honing process than using the N____n waterstones. the diamond stones do not need to be flattened. I do clean them with "barkeepers friend" after each sharpening.unmet expectations: these stones can rust when exposed to water, they can be scratched when sharpening tools made of A2 steel, and they also can glaze similar to water stones. the extra, extra fine DMT stone (supposedly 8000 grit) did not polish as finely as the 8000 grit waterstoneWhile waterstones need to be flattened, as you flatten them, a fresh layer of abrasive is exposed... with diamond stones, there is only _ONE_ layer of abrasive, which you keep using and cleaning. I bought the 4th diamond stone because the 1st DMT stone (600 grit) wore down (as opposed to wore out, after lapping ~ 8 chisels), so that it acted like a 1500 grit stone (i.e., started polishing instead of abrading; it yielded a shinier polish than the 1200 grit DMT stone). I feel the diamond stones are best used for: flattening waterstones, quick bench-top re-honing (like when you need to re-hone every 15-30 min. because of a tough wood), and initial grind (coarse, 220 grit). 3Outstanding Results Excellent !I do custom leather work and use a variety of cutting tools including round knives which can be extremely challenging to bring to a keen and near surgical edge. I purchased two double sided DMT stones, an extra coarse/coarse and a fine/extra fine, and I was thoroughly pleased with the results after sharpening my knives. Next will be my punches. Even my Kershaw daily carry pocket knife has an edge sharp enough I can skive a whisper thin curl of leather with it.They're a tiny bit bumpy at first as explained on the packaging but that disappeared in no time. By the time I finished sharpening my knives with these for the first time I felt I was getting better with them and went back and touched up the others to an even sharper edge. Even though I am quite used to using sharpening stones I have never felt as certain when making a bevel with them as I do with these. These DMT stones were worth every penny. 5Good diamond stone. I had to send two of these back to Amazon because the stones where of poor quality. They where very roughly machined, so the surface of the metal underneath the layer of diamond was not even close to smooth, I did not like the idea of my blade running into nicks and deep gouge marks in the stone. Then the second stone I got was much smoother, but the layer of diamond thinned out to almost nothing on one corner of the stone, sent that back and finally got a good product. Once I received the good stone, free from defects, I will say it is a great stone. DMT diamond stones really are great, I have used other brand diamond stones, and they don't compare to this one. The DMT stones cut fast, yet leave a nice fine finish for being as aggressive as the are. Use light pressure with these stones, they cut fast and do not require much pressure. These stone do have a break in period, they will feel a bit gritty and rough at first, but mine did break in nicely and feel much smoother when sharpening. Also as they break in they will become slightly less aggressive, but they still cut pretty fast. I bought this stone because it was double sided and seemed like a good value. The fine side can give you a really nice sharp edge without even using the extra-fine side. The extra-fine will further refine the edge, but honestly is not needed to create a razor sharp edge. I already had a DMT course, so I went with this stone to complete the grit range. I would say if you don't already have a coarse stone, buy the double sided coarse/fine and have one stone that can reprofile and repair an edge using the coarse side, then have the fine side to put on a keen edge. 4Go interrupted...continuous quality isn't very good. I ordered this to have a bigger surface to sharpen my chisels. One had a nick in the bevel so I tried the coarse side first. After two 45-minute sessions the nick wouldn't disappear. Finally pulled out my Smith's handheld interrupted diamond sharpener (coarse) and within 5-10 minutes the nick was gone. I also noticed that rust had formed overnight after using it (YES I cleaned and dried it!!!). Returned it to Amazon the next day. I did want bench sharpeners so I just "bit the bullet" and purchased the DMT 8-inch interrupted DuoSharp stones. Received them and I'm much happier with these products. 2Review on Fine/ExtraFine EDIT: I have received a replacement. The fine side is good, but the extra fine side is almost completely lacking diamond abrasive. The side is almost completely shiny and any attempt to hone an edge on it just scratches up the surface of the stone and blade, leaving no swarf. Will be returning, again, and getting an 8" duosharp. This diasharp lotto is not worth my time or tools' edge.As others have stated, the diamond dust isn't very uniform throughout block. Because of this, there are spots that are relatively bare and spots that are way too dense, leading to an uneven sand/polish.Mine also came with a small ding on the extra fine side, along with a few light scratches that look like they're in the metal below the diamond dust surface. I can easily work around the ding and scratches, but I would have liked something more perfect for the $50 I spent. 1Amazing diamond stone I used the wet/dry sandpaper method of sharpening my edged tools (chisels, plane iron, etc.) and it did the job but it required a lot of work; (20+ passes with a lot of holding pressure). With this stone it reduced the passes needed down to 5 and with minimal holding pressure. I would also say it allows the user the ability to better hone the skill of sharpening by hand (no guide) because of how efficiently it does its job. Bottom line its an amazing diamond stone at a great price! 5Terrible QC...inferior surface finish. I purchased this to sharpen small carbide insert knives (Amana RCK-51.) Both the fine and extra fine faces were pocked with surface bumps that scratched the knife surfaces and damaged the leading edges of the carbide inserts, trashing them. I used it on two blades then stopped. Very poor quality control from DMT. I wasn't expecting to get a mirror finish off this stone but also wasn't expecting such inferior surface quality. The stones definitely remove carbide, they also ruin your knives. Be careful. 1Worth the money I am a woodworker (Hobby) and I have tried various ways to sharpen my chisels and planes.I used an oil stone but found it to be not very flat with poor results.I used waterpapers up to 2000 grit and got good results but the papers didnt last long and it was time consuming and messy. Then I bought a cheap diamond plate and it worked well for about 2 months and then the diamond coated vinyl coating lifted off the backing stone and became totally useless.I decided it was time spend a bit more money and buy the DMT diamond Stone. Its flat and strong and doesnt bend, its cuts fast and clean, and it works well with just water.I highly recommend it 5
