Customer Reviews

I'm hoping this can be resolved by filling it with something dense like silicone or waxThere's not much I can say that others haven't already mentioned. It's significantly quicker than any traditional whetstone I've ever used. Just a few strokes and you're done. Very impressed with that aspect. My only grief is how cheap it feels in your hand. It's made from a very lightweight, flimsy feeling plastic that is hollowed out from the inside. I imagine that if, by some freak accident, you were to accidentally step on it or drop something heavy on it that it would likely snap apart. It also tends to wiggle around while sharpening if you apply too much pressure on it. I'm hoping this can be resolved by filling it with something dense like silicone or wax.4It's bad and DMT won't fix the problemThe "stone" has two globs of material, one of them is a full half millimeter in diameter, that catch the knife blade and prevent, well, everything. The sharpener is unusable and DMT will not respond to my inquiries. I have the red color sharpener and it is really nice, but the green stone is necessary to get a better edge. It was a Christmas present and the giver is worried I don't use the stone so I don't like it, or like her, so I need a remedy. I will not buy another DMT stone or use the system til this gets resolved. JUNK!!!1If you only get one stone for sharpening kitchen knives, this is itIf you only get one stone for sharpening kitchen knives, this is it. It doesn't remove material too rapidly, but isn't so fine as to take forever to create an edge. I had some kitchen knives that took up to 30 passes per side to restore, but that just means you're only looking at two minutes per knife before you able to cut cleanly again. Most of my knifes were very sharp after just 15 or so passes per side. The stone comes with a stand that has rubber feet, so setup is super fast. I used soapy water that I keep in a spray bottle to float the swarf and clean the knives and the stone. Super fast and super easy.5Excellent choice You can add mine to the list of five star reviews. I have owned the DMT fine whet stone for a while and it has made sharpening easy work. I just received my order for the extra fine whet stone and it is a real game changer. Just a few passes on each stone and my knives are shaving sharp. Even those made of mediocre steel. My only suggestion would be to add a box of bandaids to your cart before checking out! This stone is worth every cent. 5Makes my life easierNeeds breaking in, but once it is, works very well. I use this in conjunction with a coarse King stone, as well as a leather strop.Let s be real - any sharpening tool works as long as the sharpener is consistent with angle. The diamond stone makes it easier for me to maintain that angle, and not be afraid of scratching or gouging whetstone material (which I have done). Especially with gouges, when you need to maintain an angle while rotating the tool edge, this diamond stone works and is somehow the ideal smoothness for fluid motion. Water stones can become slippery and it s easy to miss your angle for several strokes.5The next stage up in coarseness would be better for reshaping the edge profile of a blade quickly The Sharpener arrived a day early with no damage. I have used it several times since receiving it. So far it's holding up perfectly. The next stage up in coarseness would be better for reshaping the edge profile of a blade quickly. This one is good for very quick sharpening. I also have had a finer DMT sharpener (the red one) for 15 years and it has taken a lot of abuse since I didn't know what I was doing back then. I still use that one frequently. These are worth what you're paying. Finish with a 1000 grit water stone for awesome results! 5Old dog new trick If you are a woodworker like myself, you are always looking and listening for anything that will help to improve your craft. These diamond sharpeners have done just that for me. I can now keep plane irons and chisels as square as brand new all the time! Sharpness and squareness is unreal and is effortlessly obtained! The results definitely have made a big impact on the finished product. The reason for the 4 instead of 5 is I can't seem to make them hold out very long. 4Great diamond stones I purchased this to replace the fine stone out of a three-stone set I purchased a while back. This one -> DMT W6EFC Three 6-Inch Diamond Whetstone Models in Hard Wood Box <- .As in my review of that set, this stone has proven no different. It is still in great shape, and still sharpens exceedingly well, even on blades up to 8 inches. That's about the size limit I use on these stones. The only reason I've had to purchase this replacement stone is simply because I use this particular grit quite a lot; I own quite a few knives and other bladed tools that I use on a regular basis for a variety of reasons, and ALL stones will eventually wear out...especially if used as much as I use this one. This particular grit will get you a very sharp edge on your blades, but in order to get that razor- or scary-sharp edge, you'll need to fine-hone your blades with something of a higher grit, like the extra-fine version of this stone, a leather strop, etc. Personally, I'll switch to the extra-fine stone, then use the leather strop afterward. On good knives, this combination never fails to allow me to produce an edge that will cut into darn near anything I've tried to cut.You will, however, need at least a small modicum of hand-eye coordination and developed skill to hand-sharpen blades. It's not difficult to learn, but you need to have patience to learn to use stone properly. 5Wears out quicklyIn trying to sharpen/straighten a plane blade that had 1/2 mm angulation, a few drops of TREND solution was first applied and the blade was rolled across the surface using an Atlin bevel guide. Initially, there was a gritty feel and residue was evident from sharpening, but within 15 minutes it felt like my blade was just rubbing on the steel base and there had been little progress. I don't think I'm applying too much pressure and seem to be correctly following all the guides I can find on the web. Are these less expensive diamond stone just cheaper knockoffs primarily designed for sharpening only kitchen knives that are fairly sharp to begin with?1Quick and easy for maintaining an edge.I just purchased a second. I have no recollection where I purchased the first one, probably around 2009, but I keep it at my vacation house. I have other fancier Japanese wet stones, but they are very tedious to use. THE DMT can put a quick edge on my Santoku without much fuss. I use the Extra Fine and run the knife against the edge doing 10 on one side then 10 on other. Then 9 and 9, 8 and 8, until I get down to a single stroke on each side. It s probably not well suited to a knife that has been neglected for a long time, but if you stay on it and don t let your knife get too far gone, this thing is amazing.5Fabulous Sharpener After reading the many positive reviews on this sharpener, I finally purchased the Fine and Extra Fine units from Amazon. As usual, Amazon's service was exceptional. These sharpeners come with great directions. The devices are easy to use - just a few sprinkles of water and all is well. Our kitchen knives are like new. I have a large Henkels Chef's Knife I use for chopping onions. After sharpening it on the Fine and Extra Fine devices, that Chef's Knife is fabulous. I am very pleased with the ease of use of these DMT sharpeners and recommend them to those who want a simple but effective way to keep their blades sharp. UPDATE - OCTOBER 2011 -- This sharpener continues to amaze me. I do 5 passes per side per knife blade and the sharpness is great. I have used this sharpener many times since I got it and it always yields a very sharp edge. I still highly recommend this product. 5Great stones!I am a big fan of DMT stones, especially in this format. I have a few knives in the so-called 'super' steels and diamonds just make for a very quick sharping job. Be sure to use light pressure, just enough to keep your blade in contact with the stone. I have x-course, course, fine and x-fine. If I had to give up one it would probably be x-course. I would use x-c for a chipped blade or re-profiling a new blade. It would be hard to pick just one, but if I could only get one, I would probably go with fine. The reason being, I could still get by with a little extra time on a very dull knife and I could do a final polishing on one of my stones. It is best to do your homework and find out which stones will best suit your needs.5DMT 600 grit RED...All around perfectionI purchased this DMT Whetstone as part of my expanding line-up of DMT products for home and "hobby sharpening".I love the DMT Serrated "ice pik" sharpeners! I used a Red as my primary diamond surface for 15 years and lost it.I KEEP my edges sharp, honing and refining so that actual heavy metal removal is rarely needed. A dear friend once told me "You KEEP a Cold Steel Tanto razor sharp, never let it get dull to start with!"If I notice the slightest drop in edge performance, they're gettin' honed! If honing and stropping doesn't restore the edge, THATS when you need to sharpen!I use DMT Red for the first step in sharpening a well maintained tool. This stone is an absolute must-have if you ever use the DMT Blue stones. Blue produces a rough but defined edge angle, and Red refines that surface to make it suitable for everyday usage. The stone has a break in period, and you should never use anything but water to lube them up.This stone will not "dish", or "gulley", and provides a complete flat surface for straight edge tools. Excellent quality and performance was expected, I wasn't disappointed.I would suggest an alternate company to purchase diamond stones from, but unless you choose a Japanese vendor that makes stones that are far more costly, DMT has no equal, IMHO.You can follow up the Red DMT sharpeners w/ a Spyderco Tri-Angle Sharpmaker white stone setup, or the DMT Green to produce a razors edge. Very little pressure is needed to use DMT products. Excellent shipping and reception time.Im doing everything possible to avoid heavy belt grinders and waterstones when somebody brings me a knife to "re-design??!?" WOW! GOOD LUCK on that one boys, I'll tell you.5Absolutely insaneThis thing is great. The perfect stone for whittling down steel at an alarmingly rapid rate. I cleaned up a pretty nasty chipped blade (pics included) in under ten minutes. It tears through steel so fast that you really need to be careful what you're doing. You can create an entirely new bevel in a few strokes.I can't believe how well this thing works. Actually I can't believe that an extra extra course variant exists. I can only assume that it melts steel just through contact. This is my first experience with a DMT stone after collecting quite a few tradition japanese wetstones over time. Seeing how effectively this thing works, and how simple and painless prep and cleanup is by comparison, I'll be investing in more DMT products in the future. I can't stress enough how great this thing is. If you need a stone that rips through steel before you do any finer sharpening, you just found what you need.5Fast and UniformI sharpen my kitchen cutleries by hand using this DMT diamond stone and a Japanese combination water stone: Woodstock D1130 1000 Grit and 6000 Grit Japanese Waterstone. Despite this is called a "fine" grit stone, it is plenty aggressive for a typical kitchen knife. My friend has a chef's knife which had a broken tip (~1/4") and a chipped edge, and I was able to restore the tip and the edge by using this "fine" stone. The DMT diamond stones need a small amount of water during sharpening. It is to help prevent metal fines from sticking to the sharpening surface. In my opinion, water lubricant stones are superior to oil assisted stones for two reasons. First, it is easy to apply water and to clean up afterward. Second, water is less slippy than oil and therefore it is safer to sharpen a knife with wet hands than oiled hands. DMT makes interrupted surface and continuous surface diamond stones. This belongs to the former. For most applications, the interrupted surface is slightly superior because it allows metal fines to fall into the slightly recessed area and remains out of the sharpening surface. This allows greater sharpening performance by reducing the frequency of washing and removing the metal fines from the surface. However, if your tools have very small blades, then they will get caught in the recessed area. You will need a continuous surface diamond stone for these small blade tools. I have upload a closeup customer picture of the diamond stone. The stone is 6" X 2", adequate for most kitchen knives, though a wider one would be nicer. The receded red dot areas are 1/8" in diameter. In my experience, your blade needs to be at least 1" in length to comfortably take advantage of the interrupted surface.I bought this DMT fine diamond stone for $35. I find this diamond stone to be very versatile. It cut fast and uniform, and yet gives you full control. The DMT grinding surface is extremely flat, so I also use it to flatten my Japanese water stones. If you have never used a diamond stone, then you will be surprised how fast this stone can cut/grind. I certainly was. I have an aluminum oxide oil stone and I have to push my knives downward at the stone to sharpen them. Whereas I simply slide my knives back and forth on this diamond stone. This saves time, energy and improve sharpening results. Frankly, it is probably safer too. Because the diamond stones cut faster than other stones, I like to suggest new users to check on their progress a bit more often.Despite this DMT stone is advertised as fine grit, the grit size is 600 (25 microns) which is too coarse to be a finishing stone for knives. Knife edges ground by this diamond stone should be polished on finer stones.Assuming you are into sharpening your knives or tools, I highly recommend this or one of the other diamond stones. You won't regret getting a DMT diamond stone.*Updated on Dec 27 2009*Yesterday, I noticed my Shun bread knife has two very tiny but visible chips, not quiet sure where they come about. I put it on this diamond stone and it managed to grind out the chipped area. I then finished it on my 1000 and 6000 grit water stones. This DMT diamond stone is not only able to restore my friend's damaged budget knife, but it also worked for a VG-10 core Shun knife.*Update on Mar 02, 2010*I bought the DMT W6XP 6" Diamond Whetstone Sharpener - Extra-Coarse With Plastic Box for knife reprofiling. The extra coarse stone makes reprofiling an knife edge/bevel very easy. However, for regular knife maintaince, this fine DMT stone is probably more suitable.*Update on Jun 08, 2010*I have retired my Woodstock Japanese waterstone for a couple of months because it is essentially worn out. I have since bought Naniwa Super waterstones for replacement. Nevertheless, I am still using the DMT diamond stone and it is part of my setup. It seems to be running strong.*Update on Apr 08, 2012*Sorry about not updating earlier, but the diamond stone started to show wear at the corners at about end of 2010 or beginning of 2011.4Excellent "stone" for kitchen knives I already own the DMT FWF Diafold Diamond Whetstone Sharpener Fine which is a great place to start with a very dull knife. But it's a little course for everyday sharpening. If you do the finish honing with this extra fine stone and a couple of strokes on a steel and your kitchen knives will be really, really sharp! In fact the first time using a resharpened knife my wife went right through a lemon and nicked her finger. I had warned her but it's been a long time since I've had a decent whetstone so the knives had languished a bit and were not as sharp as they should have been in a long while. The plastic box it comes in is pretty useless. I suppose you could screw it to a workbench, but I don't have the space for that in my shop area. I do use it for storage. Why buy a tabletop stone vs the folding version? Well the folding version is nice but the hinges are a bit flimsy and so it bends a bit toward the end of the stone. It's easier to use this larger block even if you have to hold it down at one end to the counter while honing. The diafold versions are nice for camping where you have to carry stuff, but the tabletop versions are much easier to use in the shop or kitchen with your big chef's knives. 5
