1st one failed, but customer service saved the day I bought this to replace a Plugable 3900 docking station that I've had the past couple of years or so. It's been flawless. I wanted to drive 2 2560x1440 monitors and needed to upgrade. I chose this b/c I thought it had a metal case (but I was mislead b/c the majority is plastic), was horizontal, and there was a coupon that made it within $30 of the Pluggable comparable version. I ordered it around Nov 26th, and now, Jan 8th, the network port has died. I've contacted Diamond customer care and will update this review as necessary, but right now I am very disappointed in this purchase. If someone from Diamond is monitoring this, my ticket is 82037428.Upping my review from 1 to 3 stars since Diamond replaced my defective docking station and their support team has been extremely professional. I'll continue to update if anything changes. 3Not great for my MacBook Functioned as advertised with my MacBook Pro (early 2015). However the driver made the fan go warp speed as soon as it was running for an hour on hdmi video output. Previously I had not experienced my mac overheating even with direct hdmi connection.After resetting SMC, the problem continued. The fan speed normalized only when removing the docking unit from the MacBook. I have returned this and will looking at a device made for Macs specifically. 1Impressive Just got one of these for my office. Honestly, I really wanted a dual 4k 60 thunderbolt 3 dock, but I couldn't find one. All of the thunderbolt 3 docks are currently single display output that I saw, and generally more expensive. Also, it forces you to use it with a laptop that has thunderbolt 3, which will probably become more common, but if you have older computers, they probably have USB3.This dock is really close to what I needed. I can plug in a single USB-C cable (in either direction!!!) and have 2 2560x1440 (note, not 4K...) monitors up and running + 6 USB devices immediately. My one gripe is that my laptops (alienware and macbook) both have integrated and discrete graphics, and I have to turn off the integrated card (which requires reboot...) to get good performance from 3D applications over display link. The dock uses the integrated card by default, and you can't change it besides disabling the internal card (a pain for the alienware, a breeze for the macbook). Apparently, this is a Windows 10 issue from what I've read, and has not been solved over the last year or so...I'm not going to hold my breath for an update.The performance on windows on my 2017 alienware (1070) is very good. I'm impressed, and see no reason to ever plug in my displays directly. It's about the same as plugging in directly (maybe a tiny bit of noticeable latency) The performance on my 2013 macbook pro is not so good. Worth just using the dock as a usb hub and plugging my monitors directly in for many applications. Still, it's hard to complain about not getting great performance out of a 4 year old computer. I still haven't played around with the settings much on the macbook, so maybe there is a way to fix it. I also haven't tried just using one display. Two 2560x1440 monitors is a few less pixels than 1 4K, so good luck to those of you who want to use this with dual 4K60 monitors on an older computer.Overall, it's a really impressive product. Even more impressive is that I still have 2 additional ports on my computer, which means I can plug in my Oculus Rift at the same time! I wish the performance was better on the macbook, but it's not a dealbreaker for me. I can always remote desktop into the macbook, which actually works alright, believe it or not. 5So far, best USB-C dock I have used. Mixed review, just opened and setup less than 2 hours ago. This is my 5th USB-C dock tested and it is the closest to perfect so far. Hopefully the only issue encountered is this unit (see details below). Setup is connect laptop power and single USB-C cable and have everything ready to go - and everything is working with no setup issues!- First, metal construction with good quality and finish.- Be sure to install the drivers from enclosed DVD first.- I have connected 2 1920x1080 HDMI monitors, external speakers, USB dongle for wireless keyboard/mouse, wired Logitech USB cam, and ethernet cable.- I would recommend connecting all peripherals first (everything but monitors) to allow computer to update drivers and do any restarts needed.- Then connect monitors. I am running an MSI GS laptop which has single USB-C port. I have left external monitor set as primary, right external as extended, and laptop monitor disconnected (so laptop is closed and slid under monitor stand). The Diamond USB-C doc instantly recognized monitors, let me configure and so far not a single flicker.- Power: just a note, the Diamond USB-C dock uses a small power block vs. the Dell dock I am currently using that has a large full size power brick.- Wish #1: the one thing this dock is missing is a USB-C port for peripherals. Single USB-C port on it is for connecting dock to computer. So single port on laptop is in use (connecting to dock) and single port on dock is in use (connecting to laptop) and no port available for external USB-C drive.- Wish #2: the Dell WD15 USB-C I have been using has several screen flicker/connection issues (one reason looking for a new dock), but it does have an audio port on the back side, which makes more sense for a dock. The Dell dock then has a headphone jack on the front (but it does not have the microphone jack the Diamond dock has).- Technical problem: I believe the power on/off switch on this unit is defective. The dock power has turned off a few times already. Just touching the on/off switch reconnects power, so I am believing it is the unit not a software thing (only using for a few hours I am assuming it is not an overheating issue). I will be returning and testing another unit. 5FIRE HAZARD: DO NOT BUY. No response from support I was very happy with this for the first month that I used it; did everything it said on the tin. However, last week I plugged my phone into one of the rear USB3 ports to charge. I had not used that port before. Within ten seconds, my Apple charging cable melted near the lightning connector: if I hadn't been watching, the heat would have set a blaze in my office. My best guess is the current limiter on the USB port failed, so the full power flowed down the cable, which it is NEVER supposed to do. USB cables just aren't designed to take that kind of power. Now, none of the USB ports work on the dock.And after sending me a faulty product that destroyed my property and almost set my office on fire, Diamond have not even bothered to respond to my support request. DO NOT BUY. 1Good Dock for Windows 10 Notebook but Poor Stand Assembly/Mounting Instructions I have not yet tested the DS3900V2 with a monitor but the USB ports work as advertised on my Windows 10 laptop, though the directions for mounting the dock vertically to the stand are only minimally helpful. The overall order of installation:1) Assemble stand and attach dock (Skip this step if you are not mounting the dock vertically): The stand assembly manual does not convey clearly that you have to remove a rectangular plate from the underside of the dock to expose mounting holes. Per the attached photo, press your thumb on the top edge of the plate and push firmly downwards until it slides down and can be removed. I also had to peel off the two lower rubber feet because they prevented the bottom lug from engaging its mounting hole. Now you can engage the mount holes to the lugs on the stand, then push down firmly on the dock until it locks into place.2) Connect dock to computer USB port.3) Connect devices to dock.4) Install drivers: The instructions stated, To ensure you have the latest DisplayLink Drivers it is recommended to download the drivers from (the provided link to the DisplayLink web site.) My installation CD had drivers version 8.0 M0 for Windows (and 2.5.1 for Mac OS X), but the website had version 8.1 M0. I stopped the CD install and installed the newer drivers from the website.Notes: My L shaped vertical mounting bracket had to be bent slightly until it was 90 degrees. Ignore picture #2 on the Vertical stand assembly instructions: the dock should be flipped 180 degrees. I intend to install self-adhesive felt or rubber to the underside of the round base plate to protect the finish of my desk. Both the USB 3.0 and power cords were a little short: with my UPS centered behind my desk, the cords were just long enough to make all my connections. Per the box, the dock is made in China with U.S.-based tech support.Overall this seems like a good dock station for the price (with the caveat that I have not yet tested the video functions), though the stand assembly instructions are sketchy. 4keeps failing The first unit I got failed and stopped working within a few days. The replacement unit I got worked for 4 months and now the Ethernet port has stopped working. This product has reliability issues, I am not inclined to recommend it. 2Connected easily, I didn't even read the manual Connected easily, I didn't even read the manual. It downloaded the drivers (or whatever it needed) from the internet without me doing a thing. It even has an adapter for my monitor cord. I am probably using this in the most basic fashion so for using two screens/monitors. and connecting directly to my printer/scanner/fax, this is fantastic. I do not see any quality issues, but again, I am not a gamer or computer guru. I have only had it for a few weeks now, but so far, so great! 5First unit defective after 2 days of working. Second unit DOA. Wait until it gets better... Respectful customer service but that's about it. The first one worked the night I purchase, but by the next morning it didn't work at all. Diamond support recommended to replace the unit with amazon and confirmed the first unit was defective. The second unit never worked at all. I'm using a MacBook, and the fact that it worked the first time means this should work. This just isn't reliable and I'd recommend waiting until they refine their production and come up with better / more solid products in the future.Update: The second unit now works on my windows (dell) laptop, but does not work on my macbook pro at all. 2Its almost there, but still great. So ill keep this short!For the money you cannot beat what you get for it. This product really makes having different platform computers as well as multiple monitors a breeze to connect to. It is as simple as installing the DisplayLink Drivers and you are in business. One major hiccup I had with this product was with the USB3.0 interference to the USB2.0. I have a Logitech Mouse that uses the Unify Dongle; well the mouse would be very laggy and unresponsive to movement or clicks, so I got fed up and started my isolation testing to what it could be; lone and behold it was the USB 3.0 interference to the 2.0 ports. who knew? well if you end up buying this product you will not be disappointed, just keep the Unify Dongle on the farther USB2.0 port from the USB3.0 and you will be good. No other interference shall occur per what Diamond has stated in the corrective measures of this issue.UPDATE: 12/20/17The product has been great for the time i have had it. A few hiccups with having to power it off and on again, but i feel it is the drivers more than the device. The drivers are universal across many other docks so dont think you are trading up or down with a price tag. If you pair this unit up with a Diamond Display to USB adapter, you can have as many external monitors as you wish... and it all runs great. 5
