Customer Reviews

Although the umbrella throws great, soft lightingAlthough the umbrella throws great, soft lighting, when used with a strobe (flash), it did not provide an octagonal catch light in the subject's eyes mainly due to having been unable to position the flash to shoot into the center. Like other reviewers said, the handle part of the umbrella is much too short, forcing the flash to pretty much be right near the back of the umbrella, especially if the diffusing cover is used. Without the cover, you have more freedom to position the flash a bit more properly.Quality Control wise, two of the umbrella stokes next to the zippered opening bent quite a bit within the first day's use. For a permanent studio or occasional use, this umbrella works perfectly fine. However, I would not depend on it on the field or professional use. However, you can't beat the price of this unit. I'd still recommend it. Just be careful handling it.If you found this review helpful, please hit the "Yes" button to encourage me to write more. Thank you! 3Small and portableI'm here buying my fourth one of these in one year; I ordered my first one last August. These bend VERY easily. I have two incredibly bent ones, and one that literally broke in half (I tossed that one). I am replacing one of the very bent ones with this one. I like these because I take them to weddings - where they do get beat up. Because these are cheap, I am not devastated when one gets banged up. I wish they held up a little better, but they distribute light well and are a nice size to transport. 4I love this thing!Don't get me wrong, this certainly won't take the place of a big 60" softbox, or a strip box, but as a general all around softbox it's wonderful. Incredibly easy to setup and take down. No special mounts or speedrings to keep track of, and it works with any light you've got be it speed light or studio strobe. The quality is very good the lining's are good and the grid is well built and works really well.My only complaint is that the zipper hole in the bottom doesn't give you a lot of angle to direct the light. It's fine if you are side lighting, but if you need to setup Rembrandt or anything high and angled you are better off running the pole outside the zipper and in through the front opening. You won't be able to velcro the cover all the way around, but you can get enough for it to work fine, even with the grid. That will give you all of the angle you cold need. Of course you could also put it on a boom arm and use the zipper, but in a pinch it works great either way.I highly recommend that if you haven't picked up one of these umbrella octobox's then I would get this one, you won't be sorry! 5excellent modifier and built quality is goodexcellent modifier and built quality is good. my only regret is that the ribs are not fiberglass or equivalent. i slightly bent one while taking off the diffuser and now its out of shape... other that that the grid, octagon umbrella and diffuser quality is very good ... Highly recommend it. 5Does the job, just don't expect it to lastWhat's the difference between the name brand gear and a value priced lighting modifier like this one? Durability.I purchased this umbrella about a year ago and have used it on location a number of times. Its easy to set up and works well. The velcro on the edge of the umbrella means it won't pack as tight as other modifiers which use hooks but it still fits into your bag easily. Its lightweight and as long as you have enough room can be used for everything from close ups to full length portraits. But when you knock it over, its going to bend. When you slide it into your bag next to the light stand, its going to get kinked. Eventually you'll knock your light stand over and its going to bend yet again. The metal rods supporting the umbrella are not very durable, once they bend they stay bent even if you fiddle with a pair of needle nosed pliers to try to restore its original shape. Its a perfectly good modifier but you'll end up replacing relatively quickly. 3Good quality light from a great bargain in an umbrella soft box.Wow, am I glad I bought this. For one quarter the price of my FJ Westcott Orb, the Cowboy Studio Pro 30" Octagon Umbrella Softbox is a well made tool that produces soft light and round-ish catchlights. Compared to the Orb, this soft box is smaller, made with metal arms instead of fiberglass, but has a solid center shaft (that won't crush when tightened in a bracket). The internal reflective material appears to be the same. The entire piece has a solid, well made feel to it. And it's $35 compared to $130!I hope Cowboy Studio sells a 43" or larger version, soon. I'll buy one.The American and European manufacturers need to pay attention. Cowboy Studio and Phottix are proving that high quality photographic equipment doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg.Why did I take chance on this unit? The spring in the shaft that held the Orb open failed. With a session coming in a week, and Westcott giving me a replacement estimate a month away, I took a chance. I'm glad I did. 5softbox anglei think somewhere the zipper idea got messed up. i think the zipper should be on the softbox cover actually. otherwise you gotta strain the cover to angle it downward, how you would need to. i doubt very many people would be pointing these lights upward at anything very often. the zipper on the umbrella itself does have one advantage, you can reach in to adjust your speedlight if you need to without undoing the whole cover. im considering have the covers be fixed with a zipper at the local seamstress 3One of the best flash modifiers for the money.Awesome soft box. The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that I have not owned it long enough to know how durable it really is. But it might be my current favorite flash modifier. With the flash pointing into the back of the octagon, it can almost behave as a beauty dish as the center light is not direct. For the price, the softening and grid control are so worth it. I have used it on a normal light stand and on a boom when right above the model's face. I know other reviews have complained that getting access to the flash is tougher than modifiers with the flash on the outside of the soft box. It is true that to access the flash and adjust the power of the light, you have to partially open the baffle and grid....yeah, not that big of a deal. Though I am over 6 foot tall, so maybe that is generally easier for me. However, It appears to my eye that having the flash being indirect makes for a softer spread of light. 4For light duty use.The quality of this softbox is fairly good considering the low price. The quality must have improved in the past couple of years according to the negative reviews I read as it is not as bad as described in the older reviews.I wouldn't use it outside of my small studio as it is for light duty use only. I purchased it as an experimental use.It sets up like an umbrella making it fairly easy considering that instructions were not included. The front diffuser and grid are fastened with Velcro that is sewn around the inside perimeter of the reflector. It is a bit difficult to open and close the front to turn on and off the flash which is one of the reasons for the lower score. If a zipper were used, it would make access easier.A mounting bracket is not included. For light, occasional use it is okay. I will be looking for another type of speedbox that is more durable and accessible from the back. 3Not the fastest to setup because of grid and scrim, but otherwise nice lightI really like the price and light quality, however it's durability is questionable. It tipped over in the wind into a shrub and bent a rod. It's still workable, but to have that happen on my first shoot was slightly disappointing. The other knock is that it takes a considerable amount of time to setup compared to some other "instant" softboxes that pop up with the screen in place. You have to go around each of the 8 segments and push the velcro to connect for both the white scrim and black grid. So it's not something you can just put together in 15 seconds between locations on a wedding day. More like a "setup and carry as one piece" type of thing 4
