Good Quality, Few design quirksWell after doing some searching, this is probably the most totally secure EDC flash drive you can get out there. Mainly because the interface components are truly, 100% airtight sealed in an all-metal container. Waterproof, dust proof, crush resistant, and drop resistant. In terms of physical integrity, I'd say this is the pinnacle of flash drives. There are some reviews of people snapping the stick off once the Aluminum cover is off, and at that point I'd say it's on you because once you "unsheathe" it it's effectively no different than any other plastic-housing flash drive. Put the sheathe back on and i'm sure you could use it as a lame bouncy ball and it would be fine.There are many other smaller/compact options that boast the same level of durability. We use a few at my work and they do seem like they can take a beating on top of being outright probably too small to begin with. But their fatal flaw, particularly for EDC, is that the USB interface is exposed, at least to some capacity. Even on the Flash Drives where the USB can be tucked into the stick it's still liable to succumb to water or dust.Electronically speaking i'd rate it as above average. Speeds seem to be par with the fairly high speed that was advertised and that's beyond good for me as a secure document device/offline password manager. Can't really vouch for doing media work with it because I don't.My two gripes with it are:-I do not understand the thought process behind the rubber "rings" at the top and bottom of the canister. Putting this in and taking it out of your pocket just once is enough to peel those suckers right off. I carry it on my key ring and end up tucking the contents of my ring into one of my pockets, so I opted to leave them off since it makes it more slim anyway. -The keyring hole is just borderline too small. I wanted to equip a Lucky Line cable ring to it in order to further secure the integrity of my EDC. Unfortunately the hole is milimeters too small, forcing me to settle for some chinesium equivalent to Lucky Line.4*Years* of a abuse, and still surviving- except the original rubber o-ring. My Fiance bought this as Christmas gift in 2013, coming up on 3 years of constant use as a once Systems Administrator and now IT Manager I absolutely love this drive. This thing has gone on my keys with me for work and play in a half a dozen climate conditions across the Atlantic ocean and back. The only thing that's decayed is the rubber o-ring seal; Corsair does not carry this seal in stock but it can be remedied with a simple trip for an o-ring at the hardware store as they come in a multitude of thickness and sizes.The drive is still going strong after one or more accounts it being dropped, crushed, and soaked. If you're on a Windows environment you will get faster read/write access if you format this to NTFS, otherwise I find it works fine using exFAT to work across Linux/Mac/Windows without any major performance gripes on USB 3.0 (Fuse package for the *nix users) . 5A bit awkward but impressively ruggedGood: People have claimed that they've run over this thing with a truck without damaging it. I haven't put it to such an extreme test, but I believe them. Screw cap makes it robust and genuinely waterproof, plus reducing the chance of accidentally losing it. I've used faster USB3 drives, but this has reasonably fast read/write speeds. Good price for what you get.Bad: The cylindrical form factor makes it awkward on a keychain; this was not my intended use so not a problem for me. I was going to write that 16GB is rather low capacity at a rather high price by modern standards, but I just pulled up the product description and discovered that they're now offering up to 256GB in the same package (including a 64GB for 50 cents more than the 16GB version; grr.) The 256GB version is a few bucks more than the ruggedized drive I have on my keychain; the added water resistance (mine just has a conventional press-on rubber cap) is probably worth the price difference.Bottom line: This thing looks like it's just about indestructible, and the higher-capacity drives now exist and sell for a decent price. If you need a flash drive that can withstand a lot of abuse, this is it. Five stars.5Not as durable as it seems...Unfortunately the usb card came out of the tube yesterday. This is a USB that gets minimal usage and removal from computers. The look and concept are cool, but I bought this for its supposed durability and screw-cap protection. I tried to reseat the device in the tube and was marginally successful as it does not go in all the way. I better transfer it to another large stick I have before I lose all the data.1PERFECT FOR PORN!My wife has me on a short leash and that includes searching my browser history. Due to her hawkish-like instincts, I cannot view pornography on the internet at home. One day, perhaps during one of my particular long "dry spells", I had the ingenious thought to pay my friend, Jorge, to load porn from his home computer to a flash drive so that I could "plug-n-play", if you catch my drift. But it couldn't just be any flash drive, it needed to be a flash drive capable of withstanding repeated throwing (for when she caught me off guard and walked into the room). Enter the Corsair Flash Survivor Stealth 128GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive. I've probably thrown this thing at AAA baseball speeds a dozen times to evade being caught. Every time I retrieve it (after she's left the room of course) it's still fully functioning and ready to go!I cannot tell you how well this flash drive has served me. Gentlemen, if you're in the same boat as me, consider storing your porn on the Corsair Flash Survivor Stealth 128GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive.5instead of just on there like rubber bands This review is for Corsair Survivor Stealth 64GB, formatted in exFAT with 256kb allocation size.I wish the rubber grips on the outside were actually attached to the metal tube, instead of just on there like rubber bands.The tube design is quite nice, but at the same time, it is not at all resistant to rolling on surfaces. They could have made the ends flat on a couple sides.I was pleased with speeds, given the other strengths of this drive, with sequential reads coming in at 100+ MBps and sequential writes at 67+ MBps. Random writes were a bit dissatisfying, but unless you are running an OS or portable program/app off of this, I wouldn't concern yourself. Speeds were measured in Crystalmark 5.1.2 on Windows 7 64-bit, drive was connected to a USB 3.0 port. I have uploaded a couple photos of the benchmarking. 4This "Survivor" got voted off in the first episode.Well it lasted about two quarters, it never got wet, it did not get tossed, I did not work off of it, just saved to and copied from. The most wear I could say was everyday key-chain use. It lasted shorter than the free plastic USB I got years ago (that one still works, just the strap that connected to my key-chain wore-out and I decided to upgrade to a larger drive instead of getting a new strap). It no longer works in any way so all of my files are inaccessible on it. Could not return to Amazon as it was after the 30 days. I will contact the company next and change my review if I have any luck from them, but a USB that's entire point is to be durable breaking in less than two quarters at school is very bad.1Cool item! Cool item!I posted some pictures because it looks much bigger than it is in reality. 52 broken flash drives within 6 monthsI was looking for a flash drive that could take a beating. I wanted something that would survive an accidental drop, something that could go through a washing machine if I left it in my pocket, and something that would just last. This was it! I purchased my first Survivor 5 years ago and never had any problems with it. The only reason I purchased another one was because it was 5 years old and I thought it would be good to replace it just so I could have peace of mind that my flash drive would last another 5 years without a hitch.Well unfortunately that was not the case. I received my new Survivor and it worked for 2 days. After formatting it, I copied all my old files to it and 2 days later it stopped working. I thought I was pretty lucky that it just stopped working after 2 days. I would insert it into the computer and every computer I used said there was an error with my flash drive. I even tried to reformat it but it still wouldn't work. I called up Corsair and they exchanged the flash drive for a new one. Fast forward 6 months and my replaced flash drive is crapping out on me. I insert it into my computer and it works for about 1 minute. I browse through the directories and then I wait. Windows tells me the flash drive is not responding. After a minute or so the computer sees nothing on the flash drive. I'm fortunate enough to get a few important documents off of my flash drive, but I can't trust it enough anymore to use it.1Survivor Nearly Died (EDITED ON JUNE 14, 2016)I'm following up with my original review (below), because I recently dropped my drive onto the floor. The sound of loose parts inside the cylinder was not reassuring. The drive would no longer come up when inserted into a computer. I carefully opened the drive and found that there was a very tiny black component which had fallen off the circuit board. It looked somewhat like those other black square components (see photos). I was panicking because I had just used this drive to back up my work before wiping my laptop. Years of family photos, important immigration documents and many other irreplaceable items were now locked inside the memory chip. To make matters worse, I'm in living in a foreign country and deciding who to trust with my important information made fixing the drive a very risky proposition, but since I was up against a deadline with one of my projects, I decided to try to fix it. Several stores wouldn't touch it, but one guy at a cellphone repair kiosk added a small blob of solder to join the leads where the component used to be. After arriving at my office, I carefully plugged it in to my computer and thankfully, the contents showed up, but the drive was very unstable. It took many attempts to download my data because the drive would frequently disconnect. I'm guessing the missing component was either a capacitor or a resistor.Now I'm revising my score to two stars, because a simple one meter drop to a concrete floor while still sealed in the protective cylinder shouldn't have killed my drive. I really wanted to like this drive, but the reason I bought it over other choices is because I really needed it to be strong and reliable. Now it's a brick. Perhaps if I have time, I'll send it back to Corsair so they can figure out how to improve the design.============ original review below ==============The Corsair Flash Survivor Stealth 256GB USB 3.0 is very nicely made. I bought it to augment the 64GB version that I bought five years ago. The speed is very good and the construction is excellent. I'm an ESL teacher. The survivor that I bought five years ago gets nearly daily use in Chinese classrooms on all kinds of old clunker computers and it has never let me down. The new stealth is great, but for my application, I would prefer it to be a bright color that is harder to ignore or leave behind. I would also prefer the lanyard attachment on the shell instead (like the old one) because it's my way of reminding myself that it's in use. The preferable method is to unscrew the drive and leave the shell hanging out. I never put the shell back in the pocket or bag unless I screw the drive back inside, but the new one has the lanyard on the drive which means I have to leave the shell loose on the desk.Using Linux Ubuntu and Gparted partition editor, I divided to the drive to have the first partition very large and then I put a small 10GB partition on the end. In Windows, the first partition with all of my files shows up, but not the second partition. But if I interrupt the boot sequence, I can boot into Ubuntu 15.10 which has been installed on the second partition and then Ubuntu will also show the first partition with all of my files.Pros:Tough constructionFast performanceLanyard attachmentAble to be partitionedCons:Lanyard attached to the drive, instead of the shellBlack color makes it easy to lose.Go ahead and buy this product. You won't be disappointed.2I like the rugged look thoughFailed to work after the 2nd day of light use. If you are looking for durability, This is not it. Because the USB pin is "glued" to the internal metal casing. The Casing is durable but not the glue. And if you have a computer that is "grabby" with the USB ports, this Flash drive just wears down after even light use. Do not buy unless your USB ports are smooth to insert and eject USB pins. I like the rugged look though.1Do not buy! Terrible product!After a second use in my law office this "rugged" sub drive came apart. I have many cheaper flash drives that are still in great shape.1Buyer Beware! Cheap construction, bad customer service.An overpriced flash drive that certainly does not present as durable as Corsair has marketed it to be. After only a few months, the USB drive broke into pieces despite no harsh use or mistreatment. This was due to its cheap, plastic constriction. After NUMEROUS contacts with Corsair customer service, they seemingly refused to replace it, despite approving an RMA for the item and having received it in their processing department.TERRIBLE customer service. Poor product design. I recommend a Samsung BAR or Lacie Extremkey instead.1
