    Doesn't hold up! Broke the 1st timeDon't waste your money on this! We bought it and the first time we used it one of the girls hit a tent stake the broke the handle of the mallet! It split right in 2 near the head of the mallet. Totally useless. I was extremely disappointed as this appeared to be a decent product. We had to use rocks to put in tent stakes. If you have ground that is at all hard, this mallet won't hold up. I can't even return this so it was a complete waste of money.1Durable for What it isThis is bigger & heavier duty than I thought. It is good for banging (hammering) things that you don t want to damage, like aluminum anything. I will use this to remove skate bearings from a hockey skate with a hole punch tool so I won t damage the aluminum spacers or inner bearing race. OK, I do camp also & would bring this heavy hitter in my truck to smash anything I need to. Smashy Smashy 5Great mallet, so-so stake puller We camp in some areas with pretty gnarly soil and the stake remover was no match for them - so we have already replaced the screw with a more heavy duty screw. That was simple enough, but I'm reducing the stars as a result. The mallet works fine. 3Smells gross and hook bends easily.Yeah...wish I read the reviews before I purchased this. Pretty much all the negatives have already been stated:1) Rubber smelled absolutely awful (like gasoline). This was packed next to a hammock I purchased and even though the hammock was wrapped in plastic, it still smelled awful too even after unpacking. I had to transport this thing wrapped in a rag and then stuffed in a plastic bag with a band around it so it wouldn't smell.2) Hook broke on first trip out. At first I though the pegs were in too tight and I was loosing my grip and that is why the mallet was slipping. But after the third time I looked down and saw the hook had been bent basically straight. I could try to rework the hook, or buy a stronger one to replace - but why bother? I paid for something that works. If they are going to use metal that can't take the strain they should probably engineer a release on it so it separates instead of gets destroyed.I think I will buy a smaller mallet (this one is massive) and instead attach a stand alone hook to some paracord and use that instead.1The hammer part is still useful. Pro tipDid the job of hammering in tent stakes. However, the hook warped and stretched when trying to pull out the tent stakes. I'll probably replace the hook part with a sturdier one from a hardware store. The hammer part is still useful.Pro tip: when getting ready to pull out the tent stakes, loosen them up with the hammer first before trying to yank them out with the hook. Once we figured that out, we were able to remove the tent stakes even with a stretched out hook.4no-brainer at this priceI already have a rubber mallet and it's one of my favorite tools.I prefer to use a rubber mallet over steel hammer when: hammering in a tent stakes hammering in a stake to secure a tarp over fire woods hammering in a stake for outdoor volleyball net hammering to tightly close a left over paint can lid tapping in for flooring project pounding a paverstone into a layer of compacted sand basically pounding anything without worrying about breaking or making a scratchIf you have never used a rubber mallet before, you don't know what you are missing.Rubber mallet is so much safer and easier to use compared to steel hammer because the center of the gravity is on the perfect spot on the top of the head and you feel much less vibration on your hand.I purchased this rubber mallet because I wanted to have exclusive one for my camping and beach tent.At this price, it's a no-brainer and I love the fact that this one has a hook on the bottom.I don't think it's strong enough to pull stakes out from ground but I can use it to hang the mallet on my pegboard or any hook off the wall for storage.If you have a need for rubber mallet, you can't go wrong with this one.Highly recommended.5Good value mallet with a hook for storageGood rubber mallet for a low price. I've only used it a couple times to disassemble metal shelves, and it held up fine.The hook is a nice addition to let you hang it while not in use.I will update if I have any problems with it, but so far, it seems to be sturdy and of decent quality (for being under ten bucks).--Update: Being a mallet rookie, I didn't even think about the color of the mallet until I got some black marks on furniture that I used this on. It hits my tent stakes without sliding off like a hammer does, and I like the hook on the end for pulling up stakes, though I haven't had to use it yet. So glad I got this for camping, no more bent stakes from trying to push them into the ground with my feet! 5What I was looking forI needed a hammer to carry on our RV trips to pound in tent stakes into our AstroTurf carpeting in front of the door. We used to use rocks to hold down the corners but there are a lot of issues with that, either you can't find any, or they're to light, or trying to pound in one of those cheap yellow plastic stakes with a rock is really a joke (doesn't work). So reading reviews, I purchased this hammer. It is light weight, well make and hopefully, it will pound in metal stakes. It also has a hook on the end to pull out the stakes. Really a nice find. Will update review when we use it at end of October.5Broke a Week Into My TripI bought this mallet for a long camping trip I took. It lasted me a week into my 3 week trip. I was hammering in a tent stake into dirt (not rocky) and the mallet snapped in half. Thankfully I was camping in the Grand Canyon at the time and was able to buy a new mallet at the general store. But it was extremely disappointing. I wouldn't recommend this.1Drove the Stake, Failed Miserably at Pulling ItBoy oh boy. I picked this up for $5.96 to drive stakes into my target stands at the shooting range. It did a spectacular job at driving said Coleman 10-In. Steel Tent Stakes into the ground. The horror began when it came time to pull them. When I grabbed the good old boy's by the neck and pulled, the hook at the base of the hammer opened right up. If I had not had my Leatherman Rev in my pocket (I had to use the handles to create a makeshift puller), I would've had to leave my stands at the range.If you're going to be using this just for driving stakes and not pulling them, go right ahead. But if you're expecting to use that hook at the base for anything other than hanging the hammer, forget about it.2I love the hook... It's a rubber mallet but a well made one. The thing I like best is the screw hook in the end of the handle. It allows hanging it from a simple pegboard hook. The head is much too fat to be hung from a normal pegboard hammer hook. It's replacing a 30-40 year old rubber mallet which always caused me a problem as to how to hang it. I never thought of the simple hook on the end of the handle in all those years. :-) 5sturdy and a great value, a touch heavy for the weak at wrist.This is exactly what I wanted and Coleman delivered. Strong, sturdy and effective...that is what I needed and I needed it at a pricepoint that suited my proletariat budget. This was perfect. To the weak at wrist: this is a touch on the heavy side so be aware of that.5Gets the job done, but slightly heavy for a backpacking trip. Nothing much to review here.Nice product that does the job. I am taking away 2 stars because:1. This is heavy! I wasn't expecting feather weight, but this thing is quite heavy. Not something you want to be carrying on a backpacking trip...well you can....but you would ideally want something that is lighter.2. Very strong odor out of the bag....the smell is really really strong. 3
