Customer Reviews

Cisco lives up to its reputation I purchased this unit due to a specific need for link aggregation (LAG) via LACP. Prior to the the purchase, I was using a Dell 24-port gigabit switch in my home, CAT6-based network. My new Synology 1813+ has the option for link aggregation and I wanted to take advantage of the connectivity option of 4 total ports. The Dell unit did not have LACP in the switch.I've not owned a business-grade Cisco product before (despite their great reputation). After reading many positive reviews of this switch, I purchased the unit from Amazon. Setup was straightforward. I mounted the Cisco in my rack, moved the network cables from the Dell, and powered-up. The web-based setup is excellent and allowed me to configure a 4-port LACP LAG without any trouble. That is the last time I've had to interact with the setup interface for the switch. I'm seeing outstanding speeds that maximize the capabilities of the Synology 1813+ NAS unit and the other gigabit devices in my home. I'm very satisfied with the quality and speed of this unit and will certainly buy an additional unit if I need more ports over time.At the time of my Cisco switch purchase, Synology did not list it among the switches that are "compatible" with their NAS units. I can confirm what other users have also noted, this particular switch works well with a Synology 1813+ in a 4-port LAG setup via LACP. I highly recommend this switch for its powerful, web-based interface and rock-solid network speeds. It is an excellent balance of quality, features, and price. 5Terrific Switch With the "modern" firmware, these seem to do everything you would want to do. SMTP data, port mirroring, VLAN's, LAG's.... (and a whole lot more). Way better done than the SG200-8. With the recent drops in price, they are a tough switch to beat. They manage nicely from the web interface and it's pretty quick. Lot's quicker than setting things up with CLI. You can lock things down pretty quick without spending two months in class.----------------------Also bought the 200-8. Seems Amazon mashed the reviews together. At it's price point it's a fine switch. It's pretty brain dead compared to the -26. The web interface is clunky and there is no https management option. I'd knock off another star for the -8 5Excellent Value for Money in a Small Business I trust the Cisco Brand so I guess I am slightly biased. However, I installed this into a Doctor's Office with about 10 client connections. The Surgery's needs are growing with the introduction of Electronic (Patient) Medical Records and Tablets to be implemented in 2014. We also provided a Cisco VPN/Firewall at the Internet Gateway and felt this switch was a complimentary purchase to ensure smooth and hassle-free Gigabit speeds on the new LAN. We also needed something reliable that wouldn't require the users to manage or interfere with. The web-based management interface is comprehensive and provides the ability to control a wide range of networking features (even remotely), some of which we will implement later. So, please check out the technical specifications if you need the actual specs. to determine what it can do for your work environment. The only reason I haven't given 5 stars is because we purchased it only a few months ago and we have yet to put the switch through its paces when we implement a server model to manage deeper networking (i.e. PCs, Tablets, Printers, Scanning, Backup Jobs, etc). For the client, they are non-tech savvy, so we needed to ensure they have what they need from a reliable brand that "just works". The device also has good logging features, and uses SMTP for email alerts, which is very handy as we're not onsite most of the time to proactively maintain or troubleshoot, etc.For the investment, I think any small business with less than 15 non-hardcore users (and connections) will be very happy with this 24-port choice. I am also aware it can be integrated into a wider infrastructure, but we haven't required features such as Link Aggregation and Spanning Tree. I understand this device will also cope very well with QoS if VoIP becomes a factor as the office continues to expand. Although it might be overkill for a sophisticated consumer user, I can definitely recommend this Cisco Switch to anyone needing to deploy a simple, uncomplicated Gigabit Ethernet LAN for backbone traffic management. I will update the review again if something important materializes.UPDATE December, 2013: I recently opted for the 8-port (mini) Cisco SG200-08 Switch for my home office, as I have become very impressed with the Interface and functioning of the 24-port version reviewed here. 4Rock solid smart web managed switch A switch is a switch is a switch, right?Hmmmm....I learned the hard way that this isn't quite as true as I'd like.In my search for a low cost switch with 802.3ad link aggregation, I began buying cheap, thinking that whatever I buy will work. There were some good and some not so good reviews of my first purchases, and when I purchased them, perhaps I got lemons, but either way, the end result was I threw away good money and wasted a lot of hours trying to get previously purchased competitor smart switches to work right. In comes Cisco SG200-26 to the rescue. This switch is made to spec. It does everything it says it will do with aplomb, never fails, and is just...well...rock solid.Bonding 2 ports together for link aggregation is a relatively easy process, SNMP works well, and there are basic analysis and troubleshooting tools that all work to spec and work as the manual states.I often make fun of Cisco, but in the networking space, I guess Cisco is much like a reliable volkswagon. It just works, and works well. Now, having played around with a Juniper fanless switch, it's clear that if you have the money, the prices, reliability, and feature sets of switches get very expensive very quickly. So imagine my surprise that a switch this solid sells for such a low price. There is a PoE version as well, and you have individual port control on that model of which ports get power and which ports don't, to save energy. But since I only have one PoE based IP phone, a single port injector is just about all I needed, allowing me to purchase this lower cost version. There are also models that offer more ports, but in an SMB environment like mine, with much of the infrastructure on wireless, and also using PLC to extend out with smaller Gbit switches that are essentially featureless, the 24 port version is all that's necessary. You also get port security and port mirroring. Both great features if you want packet mirroring to log information and include something like a Palo Alto networks AFW in monitoring mode. The web gui is a little dated looking, but functional, and it's almost comforting that this GUI is so basic. As products go, this one is a draft endurance work horse. And if you've read any of my other reviews, as long as I get the minimum features I want, there is nothing more important to me than something that is cost effective, reliable, durable, and lasts long. With that in mind, you really couldn't do much better in a managed switch than this one.Highly recommended. 4An outstanding L2 Gigabit Switch (SG200-26 24 10/100/1000) Prompt shipping, product packaging was typical of Cisco, outstanding. Let's get down to functionality. Straight out of the box this switch did not flinch when connecting it to network. It has a lot more features than I thought of an L2 switch. Although I must say I don't use them all for my home network. I do utilize trunking between my SG200-26 and my QNAP TS-419+ server. I liked the idea of tagging each port with the device name connected to it. That way, I know at a glace the status of any port and the device effected. Spanning tree port fast is an option I enabled on all non-trunked ports. Date & Time keeping for error and event logging is also very nice. I like the motd (Message of the day) feature. It reminds me of the higher Catalyst Cisco line of routers & switches.I'm thinking about playing around with the (LACP) Link Aggregation feature and setting up some VLAN's soon, my grandson streams a lot of movies over Netflicks. I have a network comprised of a mixture of NIC speeds. No problem for the SG200-26. With (1) ASUS RT-AC66U dual band router, (1) server, (3) dumb switches, (3) PC's, one runs Ubuntu, (1) WD TV Live Hub, my entertainment center and a HP Printer, DLNA enabled DVD's and etc. It's no wonder Cisco powers the Internet, not to mention most major companies in the country. I'm so sold on this switch, I'm considering buying the SG300-28 for my Son-in-Law & Daughters business. 5Professional features in a managed 8-port switch at unmanaged, consumer-grade price I don't know why I'm even bothering to write a review of a Cisco product. Cisco (originally lower-case "cisco") has been in the computer business almost as long as I have (they started in 1984; I started somewhat earlier) and have been a standard of reliability and quality - although not always the best at making business/marketing decisions.I needed an 8-port managed switch with link aggregation to get the most out of my Synology NAS, and the Cisco SG200-08 filled the bill and more. I like that it has an actual on-off button, and that the power supply input port creates a little haven around it so that you can't easily turn it off by accident. An inline rather than "wall-wart" transformer would have been nice, in my case, since the real estate on my UPS is in short supply, but there are specialty cables that rectify (no pun intended) that situation. With the low prices of the switch, UPS, and NAS, I certainly could afford the best power routing cables to hook them all up.As has been pointed out, the unit has a good heft to it despite its Lilliputian proportions. I find the Ethernet cables a little tough to remove from the inputs, but I have big fingers and, in fairness, the unit is designed so that the cable releases are on the underside of the connection so they can't be easily tripped by accident.Cisco has some marketing black eyes (supposed strong arm tactics and forced "upgrades" that users don't necessarily want - oh, and remember Flip Video?), but I don't think they're any worse than a lot of the other network and systems suppliers - they're just bigger than most, so they're more noticeable. All in all a great product at an outstanding price from a company that has proven itself a survivor. To give you an idea of how much I trust Cisco products, I don't even bother registering them - if they work for a week or two they are pretty much sure to outlive their usefulness. 5Worth every penny Love these. I have a bunch of SG200s and 300s running around. I learned enormous amounts about VLANs and network management from them, and I am constantly using features that I find that I didn't know existed, that make network management a dream. Don't be fooled by the little SG200-8, it's junk. Get the bigger one. Well worth the money, both far better than the prosumer stuff from Netgear and TP. I haven't ventured into Ubiquiti much, so I can't say, but I am totally sold on value for money with these. 5Great Switch - Great Performance This is the second of this model I've purchased as my home networking requirements are a little above the average setup, more so due to high utilisation and limited cabling between the rooms.Note: This model does not have PoE ports, there is a different part# for the 8port with PoE if that's a feature you require. The performance of this switch with high network load is excellent. I specifically bought this switch for the VLAN trunking as my internal home cabling was limited to a single cable to certain rooms and I needed multiple services / networks (Internet & IPTV) to these rooms. There are other switch options available, but I've been happy with the features and solid performance of the 1st one I bought, I opted to resist the urge to save $20 and cry about it later. If VLAN trunking / QoS is something you're looking for. Or if you're planning to run multiple high definition streams locally. This switch is a great option. If you're looking to extend connection to some other devices like cameras or PS4 etc. TP link / DLink have similar options at half the price.Hope this was helpful to you. 5Huge bang for your buck - CCIE approved I'm used to working on two types of Cisco gear - huge ISP and data center gear, and dinky garbage from the Linksys line. This is neither, it's a pretty good hybrid. This is for a serious home office, meant to replace and upgrade several daisy-chainged, 5-port unmanaged switches you get for 20 bucks at Fry's.My first thought opening the package was, "oooh rack ears!" since those cost me about 100 bucks to mount my SRX. My second thought was, "oh man, no console port...." Since then it's been a strange experience seeing actual professional-grade features with a Linksys skin on them. Examples of cool stuff you NEVER had access to for this price before without buying old hardware:- Storm control - stop broadcasts at a threshold all over.- 802.1x - move the WAP around and have it only get internet access.- QoS - limit bandwidth, give VOIP preferential queueing.- IGMP Snooping - limit useless multicast hitting your PC.- Port security - stop people from bringing their own switch and sharing their drop.- LLDP ... this one I usually like bc you can script the naming of ports based on what the switch sees attached, but there's no CLI, just a GUI so that blows that away.So yeah ton of SOHO features. Negatives:- Not so much a negative, but if you didn't understand the features I listed this switch isn't aimed at you. You can probably run it fine, but it won't be worth the extra money.- No CLI.- No routing, though I didn't deduct a star for that bc at this price point it's expected.- The -1 star comes from having a different page for so many features. For example it's really cool that I can choose weighted round-robin on my interfaces, but why does that one feature/choice have its own page? It could have been combined with 3-5 other features that have their own pages. The result is a ton of pages and clicking.Overall I'm pretty happy though, finally a pro-grade feature set without an obnoxiously loud fan made for data centers, power sucking hardware, and having to make the port count vs price decision. I'll update as I get more experience with the line. 4Great value, awful interface, blocks NFS Though I have some criticisms of this device, it's great for the price point and would recommend it for home power users or small offices needing an entry level fully managed switch - as long as they don't rely on NFS or other legacy *NIX RPC services.I got this switch specifically to take advantage of the 802.11ad link aggregation features on some of my devices (a Synology DS-716+ and an Ubuntu PC), and this aspect of the device worked great with very little setup. The switch's administration console gets an IP address from your network's DHCP server when you plug it in, where you'll be able to access its web interface. It's bundled with some proprietary software to help you find it on the network, but it unambiguously reports itself as a Cisco switch in its DHCP hostname, so I didn't bother installing any software. The web administration interface is clumsy and UGLY (I cannot overstate how awful-looking it is), but it does all the things you'd want it to do, works in all browsers, and ideally you won't be using it very often. The biggest problem I had was that all of my NFS mounts traversing though the switch appeared to be broken. After some investigation, I found that this particular make, model, and firmware revision of switch has a DDoS attack prevention feature that silently drops all NFS traffic. You cannot turn this feature off, and there hasn't been a firmware update in years, so I don't expect that this will change. I was able to work around the issue by running my NFS mounts though an SSH tunnel. 4
