Customer Reviews

Good product, take your time when taking apart The instruction sheet that came with the plug was for a 30 amp plug, not 50 amp, as this is. The previous feedback as far as being very careful not to lose screws (or have the power blades) fall out during initial disassembly were very warranted. Make sure you unscrew from the bottom, and then rotate so that the power blades are facing down before removing the cover. I found it easiest to strip the ground and place it on the ground blade first, because the ground was the only blade that would not remove. Then, I measured each remaining (3) wires, and removed the blade before attaching the wire. The common (white) wire is easy to place, since that blade is a different color than the two line hot wires. My only complaint was that the strain relief did not clamp down as hard as I would have liked. The screw heads are the usual cheapest bidder type of junk. I replaced them with some stainless screws and all was much better. One thing not addressed (that I could see) previously is whether the finished plug will fit in the standard 4" bay door plug holes on most RV;s. The answer is...yes, barely. The attached photos show that you need to leave some slack when rewinding the cord (if you have a powered cord reel), then angle the plug assembly to get it to pass through the opening. No big deal, adds 10 seconds to the stowage process. As a sidebar, I keep a tube of dielectric grease handy in the bay. So many campground pedestals have arc wounds (always cut the power on the pedestal before hooking up or detaching your rig!) that the grease helps to keep your plug looking new, and transmitting as much clean power as available. 4Good for Replacing a Bad Socket or Making Your Own Extension Cord Since not every RV hookup opportunity is at a conventional campground I have made my own extension cables using these Camco receptacles. For my hookup at home I had a 30-amp 240 dryer outlet in my garage. Although my motorhome has a 50-amp plug, its power consumption never exceeded the capacity of that socket which was protected by a 30-amp breaker. Buying sufficient 10/4 rubber-covered wire from a big box building supply store, I was able to assemble a power supply cable to extend from my garage outlet to my coach. More recently I needed to park my coach on my new home's construction site which has a temporary power pole. After I had the electrical contractor install a 30-amp 4-prong twist-lock outlet on the power pole, I used one of these sockets and some 10/4 rubber-covered wire to hook up my motorhome to power there. These plastic connectors are not waterproof, so if they will be exposed to the elements, I tape them inside a plastic bag to keep them dry. 5Great plug! I love the large handle to securely ... Great plug! I love the large handle to securely insert and remove the plug safely. I needed 50ft 6/3 cabling but I didn't want to spend $200 on the pre-made cable found here on amazon. I spent $137 for the wire else where plus what I already had and came up with what you see. They are double male ends for direct connection to my house/shop/office electric panel. Keep in mind this was replacing 460R9W ($200 receptacles) and I just can't justify spending $145 for each receptacle that I wanted installed to use with my generator in case I need it. I purchased a few Leviton 279 50 Amp to install @ each location to backfeed the premises. Thanks again amazon for offering a wonderful and well built product at a reasonable price! 5It's great once you figure out how to raise the terminals I have 100' of 10/3 Type SOW cord and figured I could make a 100' extension cord for my RV with this Camco 55245 on one end and a 55343 on the other end. The female, 55343, went on in a snap. I knew from reading the reviews that this 55245 could prove difficult to wire because of the placement of the screw heads facing the post. I'm taking one star off the review because the instructions simply read "raise terminal to access screw and clamping pole." How??? Mine didn't wiggle, even with pliers. I figured I'd break the plastic trying to "raise the terminal" to get access to the screw. Fortunately I found a YouTube video (and then discovered the video on this page) that points out that you can push on the blades to raise the terminal on the reverse side. Except that mine had no give at all. I had to get a plastic mallet and, with the rear cover removed, hit the blades pretty hard to push the terminals out enough to get access to the screw. Once I got the terminals raised, getting the wires secured was easy and the rest of the job was done in no time at all. I've tested my new extension cord plugged into the house and RV and it works like a charm. Nice replacement. 4Quality plug for 30 amp RV power cords I found this Camco item very high quality and easy to install. I used it to replace the original molded plug end on my RV 30 amp power cord. The original plug had an overheat from a campground power pedestal that had an apparent worn receptacle that didn't apply the correct pressure on my plug.Installation was easy with needing only a few tools; a phillips screwdriver, a good knife, and wire cutter. The instructions are clear easy enough for anyone to follow to insure plug to wire polarity is connected correctly.Lastly, the quality of this plug met my expectations. The plug housing is ridgid and the terminal screws are stout - holding the bare wire with super clamping power.I'm real pleased with this Camco product and will purchase more for my emergency supply kit in my RV. 5A good plug The ground pin fell out of the plug in my 50A RV Cable, and after gasping at what a dealer wanted to replace it, I just purchased this plug for less than a tenth of that cost. The RV Cable was #6 stranded - had to cut off the old connector with a hacksaw, but then had very little difficulty trimming the wires to fit the plug. Measuring the length of the individual wires is important as thick wires like this don't bend that much. Also note that black is on the left, red on the right - since it's 240, there's not a polarity issue, but it's good to keep L1 and L2 consistent. It did take about a half-hour to get the new plug on, but it looks nice and works perfectly. 5Very straightforward to install and works fine, but could be more sturdy I have a 14-50 extension cord and for that past month, I've been seeing very intermittent "ground loss" errors reported by my EVSE using the extension. I narrowed it down to the female connector on the extension cable as the likely culprit of my problem. Instead of going through the hassle of returning a really heavy extension cord through the mail, it was recommended I try replacing the female connector on it. I gravitated toward this connector because the strain relief screw holes have metal threading to grab onto instead of directly grabbing onto the plastic. Also, the strain relief clamp has an optional two sided "insert" you can put in the slot to accommodate smaller wire bundles. Or, if you have a really thick wire bundle (like around the 1" mark), you can remove this "insert" completely to use the full diameter of the hole on the bottom of the connector. This was also nice touch.First thing I noticed when opening the package was how "light" and "plasticky" the socket felt. I was expecting/hoping for a more hefty rubber feeling, like the 14-50 female socket it would be replacing. Something this, dare I say, "flimsy feeling", I'd expect to cost less than $10. But since I'm not going to be plugging in and unplugging stuff into it very often, I shouldn't have much to worry about.Opening up the connector housing was really easy. First remove the two long strain relief screws, then remove two short screws from the back and one short screw from the front. Just to note, unlike the strain relief screws, the latter 3 screws mentioned all screw into the plastic shell, which shouldn't be as big of a deal as if the strain relief was also screwed into plastic, but it would have been nice if they also had metal threading in the screw holes. After opening the housing, the female receptacles for each individual prong of the 14-50 outlet can be removed and reinserted individually from the housing which can help with connecting the individual wire leads. The instructions and recommended lengths to strip each wire was relatively accurate, but I also eyeball measured them to try and get the stripping more exact. This part was a lot easier than I expected though, probably because the 6AWG wire I was working with has very thin strands so it was pretty easy to bend and run each lead to their corresponding female receptacle inside the connector. If you have the 6/3 Romex with really thick individual strands within each lead, be prepared with a pair of pliers in hand to help you bend it, especially for the neutral wire since it runs along the left edge of the connector housing and bends 180 degrees to reach to top most receptacle inside the connector from the top. One more thing to note is the ground wire receptacle is the closest one to the opening where the wire bundle comes into the connector. This means it will be the shortest one so if you have a bare ground wire, it should have very little to no chance of shorting with another wire. Each wire lead connects to its respective receptacle with a screw which is nice and secure for the most part. However, since the 6AWG wire I'm using is made up of very thin strands, it wasn't ideal because each receptacle does not have a "plate" that the receptacle screw pushes down on to clamp the wire; the screw itself is directly screwed into the wire to clamp it down. Granted the bottom of the screw is flat so it kind of acts like a "plate", but it was not ideal for the thin strands of the 6AWG wire I was working with as it caused it to fray quite a bit. In the end though, is was secure enough and the total surface area contact between the wire strands and the receptacle was enough to not worry too much. Wires made of thicker strands probably would fair better though.Overall, this product works very well for my needs. So far I haven't seen the "ground loss" error reported by my EVSE, but I will wait another week or two to make that final determination since the problem was so intermittent. I'm going to dock 1 star though since I really believe something that costs around ~$15 should be of less "plasticky" quality, plus it would have been better if each prong receptacle had a flat "plate" to help secure the wires being screwed into it. 4Not too shabby but could use some small improvements. My RV cord was in need of repair so I purchased this as I've always liked Camco products. The instructions were well laid out, BUT pay attention as one part of the drawing shows the layout if you are looking at the plug from the prong side and not the back where you connect the wires to the terminals. Other than that the directions were accurate on where and how long to cut your wires and how to lay then into the plug housing. The plug housing is plastic and does have a cheap feel to which is bothersome (I like things with that heavy duty industrial quality feel) but it seems adequate. There is a piece that you can use and flip over to accommodate your wire OD size. That part worked out fairly well and was easy to determine. I do wish it had been made with some degree of waterproofing as sometimes trailer plugs can be dropped when winding them up or getting them out of the trailer but that's just my safety side concern so be careful on that account. As they say, There's always room for improvement. 4Excellent. I've used other replacement plugs for 30A cables ... Excellent. I've used other replacement plugs for 30A cables and they were always far too crowded inside. This is relatively roomy. I had an 8/4 cable and it worked just fine.I will repeat what another has written:1. Strip only just "enough" copper wire to allow the strands through the clamp, not beyond.2. Leave not even one strand outside its clamp. Note: You might consider tinning the wires. I didn't, but ....3. Tighten the screw posts as tight as possible. 5Well designed, fits the RV wire outlet hole I just installed but it looks great and was pretty easy to install. Pretty sturdy. Those who have any trouble with the screws coming out maybe over-tightening them, its plastic just snug them up and a hair more. Here is a picture of how to wire it. You may have to slightly adjust the wires to make it close, typical for most plugs anyway and these are large wires. 5
