Customer Reviews

Works excellent, use quality equipment and cables always. This is an update after my review below. Customer support evaluated the unit, it was working fine all along. Sometimes you test cables and other equipment and it stuff stops working, that's what happened, it worked well and support confirmed it wasn't their product at fault. So it's back and does work with new equipment. Also, support did excellent and was very helpful throughout the process, which was quick. Good job Blackmagic!OLD REVIEW: Very disappointing, only lasted 6 months of weekend use. So that's like 30 days of use. It does get hot. We tested the cables and other macs and determined this unit just flat out died. Will be working on returning for refund or exchange. Only gets a star because it worked very well. But not cost effective, maybe we got a bad unit. I hope Black Magic can restore faith in this product. OLD REVIEW, SEE UPDATE ABOVE. 5Flawless video streaming I bought a refurbed macbook pro ($650) to live stream high school football games on facebook live. The blackmagic mini recorder and mac thunderbolt cable is the perfect combination for streaming. In the past we used windows based laptops, ustream, and other devices but it was always iffy whether or not we could have a flawless broadcast. Three games into our season and we have had no issues what so ever. No drop outs, no buffering etc. On away games we use a Verizon hot spot and to my surprise, no difference in quality from our direct Ethernet connection when we are shooting home games.Facebook live is the only way to go for streaming. Our broadcast has never looked so good. We use the audio from our local radio station broadcast mixer direct to our audio board and the audio is wall to wall. Don't skimp on your streaming equipment if you want to produce a good broadcast. 5Impressed So I'm no cinematographer, let alone know what the devil I'm looking at when it comes to buying tech these days. Which is sad, but that's not what we're here to talk about. In an attempt to get some YouTube footage up, I went and bought a Canon t6i. Well, due to INTERNATIONAL REGULATIONS AND TARIFFS, these kinds of cameras are only allowed to shoot 30 minutes at a time. Being naive, I tried plugging the cable it came with into the laptop and if you know anything about recording, you're already smugly laughing at my pitiful attempt to remedy a much more complicated problem.Friends, the very little I know is that you need something to process the data coming from your camera and into your computer so you can record/livestream. I spent days looking at reviews, how-to's, the whole nine yards, and there's a handful of products out there with an even wider array of opinions on what works best. Here's what I've learned after making his purchase: THE DEVICE WORKS GREAT, but you might have to READ a little bit to understand what you're doing. It may be plug and play for some people, but you're dealing with something a little more complicated than slamming a USB stick packed with vacation photos of your dog into the side of your MacBook. If you're looking to livestream or get longer videos from your DSLR, this is a great choice. Make sure you get the right cables/adapters to run from your camera- to the Blackmagic- to your computer. DEFINITELY recommend. 5Gets the job done - perfect capture and streaming device You might be looking at this and the Blackmagic Design Intensity Extreme HDMI and Analog Capture & Playback Device - Thunderbolt and trying to figure out the difference. From the standpoint of ingesting HDMI footage the two devices are pretty much identical. The Ultrastudio Mini recorder takes HDMI in on one side and shoots video through the Thunderbolt port to a PC or Mac. It even uses the exact same software as the Intensity Extreme including the included Media Express recording app. The Mini works just as well as the Intensity extreme for streaming applications.Where they differ is that the Intensity Extreme has the ability to pass through the incoming HDMI to another device. It also has analog input and output capabilities which this device lacks. If you're usually just capturing and/or streaming HDMI video footage, this is all you need. It works great once it's configured properly. 5High quality streaming made easy. Having not used a video camera in about a decade I was perplexed with how get the video from my new GoPro to stream on the internet. After a few google searches I realized that I would need an adapter of some sort. There were many USB versions out there that just seemed too expensive for what they were. Being a mac user and having thunderbolt audio equipment I thought to myself, "I wish there was a thunderbolt version". One google search later I found this little beauty. I watched a few review videos and I was quickly convinced this would be my best option. It works great, doesn't need external power and it's very compact! Not being video pros we managed to stream live video in HD. We will be streaming our wedding to my fianc e's grandparents over seas this summer. We recently did a trial run to make sure we could get everything to work on both ends and it went very well. The look on their faces when they saw how great the quality was made this purchase more than worth it. 5Like It Much Better Now I've had the Ultra Studio Mini since Jan 2018 but reliability was questionable. I'm liking the mini better now that I made a couple of external mods to it. Please note: "E X T E R N A L".As almost everyone has posted, this little device runs very hot. I use the Mini for live streaming and to convert vids. After a couple of hours of using the Mini, it gets very hot to the touch. Being concerned that the device will overheat and fail, I keep my use to about a couple of hours at a time. Not being satisfied with the heating issue, I shopped for a Magewell and read reviews for it. Seemed like overheating is common for both devices. However, I saw a review of a Magewell where the reviewer stuck heatsinks on it to keep the device from running hot. I added the same heatsinks to the my mini as shown in my photo. The heatsinks seemed to have made a significant difference that my Mini now runs warm even after a couple of hours of use. I now have little concerns using the mini for more than just a couple of hours. Here is the heatsink I used: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01JB8MQ76/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1I have no affiliations with the heatsink manufacture or vendor.I also stuck 4 rubber feet to the bottom of the mini so it doesn't slide around on my desk. 4Makes my job easier I'm sure there are plenty of other applications for this handy little device, but for me, it's used as a means of capturing the image on monitor screen of shoots were taking -- copied and pasted into my script notes. It's way better than using my iPhone to:1) Try and line the camera up as best as I can with the monitor screen2) AirDrop it to my Macbook Pro3) Delete it from my iPhone (almost always shooting sensitive materials)4) Look in my Download folder and open image in Preview5) Save it as a low-res JPG6) Drag it into my script notes7) Resize the image in my script notes8) Delete it from my Macbook Pro.Using the Blackmagic Mini Recorder my steps are drastically reduced AND I can take numerous images in a row and select the best one, by simply holding down the Cmd button and pressing "G" a few times in a row.1) So pressing Cmd+G replaces using my iPhone to take a snapshot of my monitor image. This action though also automatically (because I set it to do so) saves the captured image to my Download folder on my Macbook Pro desktop. From there I ...2) Look in Downloads folder, and open the image in Preview3) Save image as a low-res JPG4) Drag image into script notes5) Resize image in script notes6) Delete it from my downloads folderSo I've not only dropped 2 steps, I've gained the possibility of getting more good shots of the same action, which would be basically impossible using my iPhone. The producers and happy, the director is happy (for images to facilitate continuity), and the editors are happy (and that's what really counts), and I'm happy which is REALLY what counts ;) 5Works with HDMI... but you have to set it up first! I purchased two of these to replace the more expensive Intensity Extreme when I realized it essentially does the same thing! But when I received it, I couldn't get it to work with my Canon HDMI camcorders (output is 1080i/59.94). I tried it on two of my MacBooks and it just wouldn't work. Was planning to return it for a refund when as a last ditch effort, I read through the reviews at bhphotovideo.com (they are worth checking out when Amazon reviewers don't help) and found a review by Mauricio Sarmento (June 2013). Here's what you need to do:1) Download and install the latest software for UltraStudio MiniRecorder from blackmagic's web site. Restart your cpu.2) Hook up the Ultrastudio to your computer using a thunderbolt cable and connect a camcorder to your Ultrastudio.3) Open up your Mac's System Preferences, click on "Blackmagic Design", and set "Input" to "HDMI Video & HDMI Audio."4) Open up Blackmagic Media Express and your camcorder's HDMI signal should show up on "Log and Capture" (make sure you select 1080i/59.94 for your preference settings in Media Express).Hope that helps someone! 5DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE! THIS DOESN'T WORK Dead on arrival. After 40 minutes on hold for tech support and then an hour or support "help" they told me the problem was with my Thunderbolt cable even though it was purchased NEW along with the UltraStudio Mini Recorder. The recommendation from the BlackMagic Rep was to take my laptop into Best Buy and try a bunch of cables in the store. I purchased an Apple brand thunderbolt cord and got on the phone with my laptop manufacturer to ensure my drivers were current. Still no "light" on this Mini Recorder. Total waste of time and money. And the BlackMagic support was useless. 1HDMI/Thunderbolt ingestion was easy and smooth I am preparing to do a weekly live-streaming event for my organization. We're on a shoestring budget (who isn't in the NPO world?), and we're still evaluating streaming providers. The only hardware encoder under $500 is tied to a specific provider, which would simplify our setup but would tie us to that provider. (No, thanks.)The Blackmagic UltraStudio Mini Recorder was an intriguing, low-cost solution for interfacing our HDMI camera with a MacBook Pro we already own. This device allows us to put more of the encoding chain into software, giving us a choice of encoders and providers. I purchased it along with an Apple MD861ZM/A Thunderbolt Cable - 2.0 M (NEWEST VERSION).Thanks to the experiences many other reviewers have shared here, I knew to download the software directly from BMD, and installed it before plugging in any devices. The version current at this writing (Blackmagic Desktop Video 10.3.7) also installs four applications:* Blackmagic Disk Speed Test* Blackmagic LiveKey* Blackmagic Media Express* Blackmagic Multibridge UtilityLiveKey and Multibridge Utility don't seem to apply to this device at all. Disk Speed Test is what it sounds like, performing a "stress test" of write and read speeds to evaluate which video formats your current setup is likely to support. Media Express can capture, log, and play back video from the Mini Recorder and other devices. My experience with the Mini Recorder (interfacing a Canon HDMI camera to my MBP, and feeding it to Wirestream for a test YouTube live video event) was almost painless. I did not have a huge bundle of choices, but rather the format being ingested from HDMI. So, from my perspective, it really WAS "plug and play" with video and audio feeding from the camera into Wirestream. The box itself is both improbably small and unbelievably heavy. The outer shell seems to be 1/32-inch steel, and acts as a heat sink in operation--it does get uncomfortably warm. A single white LED next to the Thunderbolt port indicates output. The input ports are BNC and full-size HDMI (a good match for the HDMI/mini HDMI cable supplied with my camera). There is no power cable or adapter.I am quite impressed with the BMD Mini Recorder, and can say it has already earned a place in my setup. 5
