Customer Reviews

Great Features.Great Features...Nice roomy interior, easily bolted to a shelf or floor, key over-ride and an external battery pack in case you let the batteries run too low to open the safe. HOWEVER, although I easily recorded my finger prints initially into the biometric memory and it worked well for about 3 weeks, after that it would no longer open when I put my finger on the reader, as if the memory had been wiped clean of my prints, and it would never accept my husbands finger prints at all, no matter what we did. It was really disappointing because we really liked the features. Bummer...had to return it. The upside was that Amazon was great about handling the return. 1Buyer beware if you need biometric security don't buy the same. After reading the reviews for this say I still purchase that anyway. I really thought I would use the safe and then I got a good deal because it was a one-day special and I got it for $75 off. I got the safe I really liked it I set it up I even install the magnetic light in the safe. I've been loaded up the safe with my items of protection. I lock the safe in the safe was wonderful for about two days. Then the biometric lock stopped working. I hope the company reads this review. People by biometrics saves so they can have a quick reliable access to the things that they need quickly. If your saves do not work properly please stop selling them, and tell everyone that purchased one to ship it back to you and then you refund their money immediately. There should be a class action suit against you as a company for selling biometrics saves the families that need quick access to items of importance under high-pressure situations quickly in the safe. I will never buy another item from this company again buyer beware. Don't even risk the safety of your family and try the safe out for even one day. 1From Price, to delivery to end product, I HIGHLY recommend! After reading some review I was a little anxious. However it arrived earlier then expected (one day instead of the 2 day Prime Shipping promises) and it has been an excellent experience and item.So lets do Pros and Cons, starting with cons because there are so few.Ok, let many say this is NOT a thick reinforced safe. Its more of large lock box. But lets be realistic, for $230 did you expected something more? Really? I believe a reinforced walled safe would be at least 4x that amount. Gratefully for me, a large Biometric lock box is just what i needed. It is also not water or fire proof as many pointed out, but it never claimed to be. A previous poster did great job pointing out the cons to such a safe so please read.I did a good inspection of it on arrival. Shipping box was in good condition and so was safe. The interior shelves were not bolted down and loose (as many others had noted.) The bolts and nuts were loose in the safe and could potentially fall through the small mounting holes in its wall/floor, I can understand how some people were missing some. Luckily everything was inside. I would recommend that new buyers do look thoroughly in safe and shipping box if any are missing. Since all the other items were in small ziplock bags outside the safe I would recommend the manufacturer do the same for the shelf bolts and problem solved. There was some ever so slightly chipped paint on the front of one shelf (from bouncing around in safe. Nothing a black marker couldn't fix, and I didn't buy it to look pretty. Again, if manufacturer just secures them better or outside of safe, that would be solved. Also the front door is so ever so slightly, barely noticeably loose. I plan to just adhesive some foam seal around it both to reduce the rattle and provide tight and protected closer. And as so many have said, Its made in China. But that does not mean its crap. guess what people...most things you buy today are made in China or Pakistan. Including your I-anything from Apple, so that does not equate to crap. The safe I received was good quality.Ok now the pros: Like I said, I found it to be very good quality for a large safe (lock-box) that is the same price as my small fire/water proof document safe. As a previous poster mentioned, I read ALL the directions first AND made sure to bio scan many fingers at different positions\angles for each. I had nothing but great scan readings from that point. I HIGHLY recommend any new users do the same, it may help with the "multiple try" readings some have mentioned. My experience with the scanner has been a+. I did take those cheap batteries it came with and replaced with a name brand. It came with bolts for you to use to secure to wall or floor (unexpected but pleasant surprise). I'm picky so I would still probably go and buy my own super high quality ones but having these helps find the right dimensions to match up.As it describes it also has a battery backup box and two keys (plus hexkey/allen wrench to get to access panel) for back up in case of scanner failure. I love this feature and I personally plan to keep the wrench and keys off site and the battery backup box locked in another lock box I have at home. This way only my print scan can conveniently be available (even with back up).Over all I am VERY happy with what I received. From Price, to delivery to end product, I HIGHLY recommend. Now, if something changes in the proceeding months Ill let you all know ;} 5A secure, reliable, quick-access storage solution. If you are considering this item, chances are that you are particularly interested in the biometric functionality. I have owned several biometric devices from different manufacturers, including several small safes. The results have varied greatly in all cases. The method used by the BARSKA safe works the most consistently and reliably of any device (safe or otherwise) I have used thus far.I purchased this safe particularly to store firearms and ammunition. It is quite roomy in this regard. It can store numerous pistols, and hundreds (potentially thousands) of rounds of ammunition (depending on how efficiently you place the items.) I am a responsible gun owner, and safety is always the number one priority when firearms are involved. Because the safe is used for firearm storage, the reliability of the biometic feature was paramount. I wanted something roomy enough to provide ample storage, but if you can't access it quickly, then the safe is all but useless to me.The safe is capable of storing up to 120 fingerprints. Some might interpret that as 120 individual users, but in my case it serves for redundancy. I scan several different fingers, each multiple times at slightly different placements on the reader, and this greatly aids in my ability to reliably open the safe without fail. I won't go into the details of programming the safe (it's quite simple) but instead focus on its usage. One depresses the button on the front of the safe adjacent to the reader, and places the finger on the reader itself. It takes a little over one second for confirmation, and the safe unlocks. Using the aforementioned strategy, I (virtually) never experience a single failure to gain access. In fact, I can't recall the last time I experienced a failure in months of usage. If one is in a hurry, and needs to access the safe under stressful conditions, then multiple attempts are not desired for reasons that should be obvious. I can say that, in my experience with this safe, the biometric access functionality has been absolutely superb. As for the safe itself, I am not a metallurgist, but I know this safe isn't constructed of pure steel. I have no doubt that if one truly wished to gain access to the contents, given ample time and equipment, Charlize Theron would have little difficulty circumventing its metal casing. It's no Washington 1000, but then, I'm not storing gold (mostly just lead.)I have read other reviews, and some had quality control issues. I found none of this to be the case. The safe arrived in pristine aesthetic condition, and functioned flawlessly from the beginning. It is not fire or waterproof (nor did I need it to be) and I was aware of this before purchasing. It has small holes to allow the owner to bolt it to the premises (which is highly recommended.)I required adequate security for firearms storage, with a quick and reliable method of access, and that is exactly what I got. The price is primarily due to the biometrics, not the absolute impenetrability of the safe itself. Some of the negative reviews made me reticent to purchase, and I don't discount the experiences of those purchasers; I can only say that my experience has been positive (I have not had to deal with customer service.) I'm completely satisfied with the purchase, and would recommend it to anyone whose requirements are likewise.ONE YEAR UPDATE:I received a question, to which I responded, and thought it would be a good idea to update my review. The safe continues to work flawlessly. Last week, upon opening the safe, I was issued a series of unfamiliar beeps which I assumed to be a low battery indicator. The safe still opened as usual, and I changed out the four AA batteries before closing it again. I never read manuals (because manuals are tantamount to cheating) but it seemed like a logical conclusion. I generally open the safe on average one or two times per day, and this was the first time I have needed to change the batteries in over a year of use. 5Poor quality control at factory/returned it.General comments)This and other import "safes" should more accurately be described as "lock boxes" rather than "safes" due to very thin metal which can be compromised with simple power tools. If you are looking for a serious safe, you will need to spend much more to get thick metal and proper designs. If however you wish to keep guns out of your children's hands, but not protect them from an actual break-in by a knowledge thief, this and others in the price point are probably fine.Specific criticisms to this model which lead to me returning it:1) Too much play in the door/rattling against the frame when locked. The door itself had approx. 1/2 inch of play in it when locked. In other words, when I gently pull on the handle as if I wanted top open the door, it would move about 1/2 inch forward with the blots engaged. In fact, when the package arrived at my home, I could hear metal-on-metal rattling around as I moved it from the front porch to the living room where I unboxed it. I initially thought that was simply loose part but as it turned out, it was the door rattling back and forth as I described. Perhaps I received a "bad" copy; the Barska rep I spoke with indicated that this was not normal and recommended that I exchange the unit.2) Cosmetic damage right out of the box.Mine arrived with a large "X" shaped scratch and some smaller "slash" marks on the front door. It also had a large indentation in the upper right of the frame as if something heavy crushed it by 1/4 inch or so. The shipping box was not damaged suggesting that the safe was packaged with these defects in the the factory.3) Unreliable biometric readerThe biometric reader worked 7 times out of 12 for me having scanned my thumb and index finger in three positions (6 prints in the system). Just too unreliable to be practical for me since the intended purpose was to house some handguns.Summary)For the money I spent, these were deal breakers. Kudos to Amazon for their hassle-free return policy - Prepaid return slip with no fuss. I just dropped the package at a UPS store and it was done. I now find myself searching for something of higher quality suitable for the storage of handguns with easy access and without spending tons of money. 1Setup is pretty straightforward. Using hex screwdriver (comes with the safe)Setup is pretty straightforward. Using hex screwdriver (comes with the safe), you remove BARSKA logo behind handle, insert emergency keys provided in a seperate package into hole behind BARSKA logo. Then you turn key counter clock wise and big knob clockwise to open it.After opening the safe, you insert 4 batteries (also provided). There is a plastic cover over battery compartment, just remove it and insert batteries. You'll hear a beep when it turns on.Finally there is a plastic cap over a button in door's internal side. You remove the cap, press that red button under cap, then keep your finger over fingerprint scanner for ~5 seconds until you hear 3 beeps and that's it.Before closing the safe, try to unlock the door several times with the finger you just registered. Pretty much that's it. I liked it, there is too much space and very easy to lock and unlock. 5I read the other reviews and decided against my better judgement to buy it anyways I read the other reviews and decided against my better judgement to buy it anyways. It arrived banged up, several dents and corners were scuffed up. The top and bottom, where the hinges are, have been pushed up/out. So those dents there are from the inside pushing up. When it's closed, you can pull on the handle and it ever so slightly opens a gap enough to see the locking rod inside. The deal breaker was the lower hinge broke loose and now swings freely. It really is nothing more than a over sized lock box. The metal is thin and I wouldn't trust this around a 10yr old kid. Trust me, I know how I was at 10 and I would find away in, especially nowadays with YouTube! Not to mention someone could grab some tools out of my garage and probably get into it rather easily. I took a picture of the top outward dent from the hinge, doesn't show up well on camera, and a short video of the broken hinge on the bottom. I hope this review helps someone. 1Great safe for the price. This is exactly what I wanted...I have a 2 year old Toddler, so making my handguns non-accessible to her...but quickly accessible to me was a must...this safe is perfect. It holds a ton of scans...and although it is pretty accurate, I did find myself having to read my print twice on occasion. What i did was programmed 10 scans each of my right index finger, and my left index finger (at different positions)... now the safe hits on the first read every time... I did the same with my wife. I love this...I don't have to worry about my child finding the keys, or figuring out my passcode.... she simply can't open this safe, well...unless she cuts my finger off in my sleep. The safe does come with back up keys, but those aren't kept in this house... in the event of the print feature failing, they can be gotten and brought here to open the safe. In the event of a battery failure...the safe comes with a back up device that you plug into the safe and it powers the reader so you can open the safe and change the batteries. This is exactly what I wanted... I purchased hangers for my pistols, I have 6 hanging, I could easily fit 3 or 4 more, and I can easily fit 50 boxes of shells in there with the guns. 5Do NOT buy this Lockbox, you will be disappointed.Terrible! I ordered this safe for a "safe" place to put my pistols. My full size H&K45 will not fit. This is not a safe, it is a lock box with biometrics. It is no thicker than an old fashion tin file cabinet. I ordered the Barska Large Biometric safe, pictured in the title. I received a knock off version, Barska trying to get over on me. SMH. The "safe" is hollow inside, when you knock it echos. I could not gain access because the keys are locked in the safe. Look at the picture they have and look at my pictures, it is completely different. Completely different "safes." BUYER BEWARE. 1Great, inexpensive option depending on your needs.Great value if all that is required is a basic safe. It is not fire rated and is light so if someone wanted to they could just take it unless bolted. However, if you use it to keep firearm and knives away from children but want quick access should the need arise then this is an excellent option. I got it on sale during the holidays for around $150 and used my Amazon points for most of it, but I would have payed twice that out of pocket for this safe. The only issue I had was that the door rattled a bit so I put adhesive pads where the locking bars touched the safe and have since been completely satisfied.Update 3/16/2015: I have had the safe for about 5 months now and it has performed flawlessly. I don't know why some other reviewers are having problems with the scanner. When I first got the safe I programmed several fingers in at all different angles so that it would register no matter how I put my finger on the scanner. I have used this just about every day for the time I've had it and have not even had one hiccup. Maybe there is an issue with theirs or maybe they weren't as thorough as I was. Regardless, my review remains 5 stars. This is an excellent safe for my needs and has performed perfectly. 5
