Customer Reviews

Works very well. Really boosted my range along with my existing Asus router to give a decent signal to all more cameras. Added another 70ft of outside coverage through my cinder block walls. Added bonus is the ether net port is live when using as a repeater so I can use it to power my non WiFi gear in the garage. 4Not New, But Still Functional This device was a return from someone else. When I fired it up, someone else's home network settings were in it--luckily they did not change the default password, so I could get in and change it. Not exactly the "New" I was promised.I use this in Access Point (AP) more because I have a network jack near an outlet, so I can plug it in. I like this method better than bridging, since I can get better quality and speed via a hard wire. However, the range of this device is not as great as my original wireless router. If this were my only AP, it would not cover my whole house, like my wireless router would if it were centrally located. I got this because my wireless router is in the basement, and this is on the main floor and extends a few bars into a former dead spot in the guest bedroom, and gives more bandwidth for the Echo devices upstairs. It paired well with my ASUS wireless router that T-Mobile provided me, and only took a few minutes to get set up. I could have setup quicker if I used the WPS button that does setup automatically, but I like to do this stuff myself. It was easy to do. 3Poor life span It failed, I had it for 6 months did not notice when it failedi. Then I bought the 2nd one. The 2nd one failed April 23, 2018 I bought it February 26 2018. Less than 2 month. It worked perfectly for less than 2 months. I thought maybe the first one was a fluke, nope. Bad life span, 2 in a row. It lights up, after reset will not connect, visible on wifi but will not transmit data to Internet. 1Short of expectations The setup was easy, but I made a mistake of setting up the repeater SSID the same as for the original router. Yes, this is a recommended setup, as it is supposed to give me a uniform WiFi network across all the house. However, at least two devices (a kindle and an older tablet) do not work with this repeater at all. They constantly try to establish the connection, and they fail. Since this problem affects 2 different devices, I believe it is the repeater's fault. When the repeater is turned off, they connect to the router without issues. My router is Asus RT-N12, so one would think both devices are a perfect match for each other. Not! Another surprise is that one cannot configure the repeater to use a different channel to broadcast the original signal, it always uses the channel selected by the router. I had no way to measure it, but it is obvious that this leads to packet collisions and decreases the maximum throughput. The instructions say that the repeater should be close enough to the router to get a consistent green light showing a good signal from the router. Well, even if I put the repeater in the next room, where according to my smartphone I'm getting 84% of the signal from the router, the amber light still lights up from time to time. Only when I put the repeater in the same room with the router is I see a truly steady green light, but such configuration is pointless, as it will hardly extend my network. So why 3 starts? Because, after all, it works for my intended purpose which is help deliver the WiFi signal to my Roku player, which is far from the router. The signal quality light is amber more than half of the time, but RP-N12 still provides enough bandwidth for the player to work without hickups. Well, at least most of the time. And when I need to use my tablet or kindle, I just use the OFF switch on the repeater. Now I know why they put it there. 3Solid repeater for the money I bought this repeater to boost my Asus RT-N56U router. This repeater only uses the 2.4g band which is fine since I an not in busy area like apartment complex. The setup is very easy and fast using the WPS feature. NOTE: At first the WPS did notwork because I had not realized that hiding my SSID on my router, disables the WPS feature. So once I unhid my SSID, it connected fine.My one complaint is that the Roaming Assist feature is not really working for me (feature that switches from the repeater to your router depending on which has the stronger signal). I called ASUS about it, but they could confirm is that it is built in to the hardware and it should just work. So I really don't know why that does not work. I may call them back and talk to a technical person. [Update: I found that by logging into the Repeater itself, there was a setting that does in fact Enable the Roaming Assist. And it now works. I don't understand why the feature would be defaulted to Disabled when it is one of their selling points...]. I still subtract one star for unclear documentation.Still, this repeater greatly boosted my WiFi signal to the other end of my house, so it is doing it's job. 4Works Perfectly (Advice given about "advanced setup") I had little to no complications with this device. My router did not have the WPS feature for the "easy setup." But the "advanced setup" is extremely basic and its instructions were less than half a page of the pamphlet. NOTE: If you connect to your wifi using this setup process but do not enter the correct password, the extender will NOT notify you that the password was incorrect. The setup process will finish without a hitch, but you will obviously not be able to use it. So basically, just make sure you enter the correct password for the wifi that you wish it to connect. Hope this helps! 5I generally like ASUS stuff but this one gets zero stars I have an ASUS router that works great. I have a weak spot at the far end of the house. I figured a repeater would fill the weak spots. This is an item that will give ASUS a bad name. I can get it configured and the IP camera will link to it. Within a day or two, the camera falls off the network. When I try to connect using a notebook, this device refuses to connect or can't be found. I would avoid this lemon. 1Not as promised... So far I don't like it. My intend was to extend the signal of my existing WiFi from one side of the house to another. I need the signal in my bedroom, where I use my tablet (see picture). The total distance is 42', and the signal is diminished enough to create lag. So I thought to use this repeater (N300) somewhere in between to boost the signal. Neither option (A or B) works for me. The signal strength from repeater to router, and from repeater to tablet is great, but internet is so slow as to be useless. My existing weak signal from the router to tablet gives me better internet, than the repeater. What am I doing wrong? 2Good value for inexpensive range extender, but not reliable enough. Nice range extender for the money - I'm using it wired in access point mode. It was a little tricky to set up in that ASUS expects you to set it up in wireless bridged mode and I simply wanted to plug it in to Ethernet and configure it; in making it easy to set up wirelessly they made it difficult to set up wired. And this should be obvious, but I thought when set to auto channel it would figure out the best WiFi channel and it didn't - until I used a utility on my phone to see the signal strength of nearby channels and manually select a channel without overlap I had all kinds of interference issues that made roaming work poorly with all kinds of drop outs. Once I figured out how to turn on Roaming Assistant and adequately separate channels it all worked well. Noteworthy: no 5GHz on this unit - just standard 2.4GHz and 100Mbps ethernet. For the price I'm not complaining.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~An update: I dropped this a star after living with it for a year - it needs periodic rebooting more often than I think is acceptable - maybe once a week. By contrast, my main Asus router (RT-ACRH13) goes for months and months without issue. In fact I ended up scripting a reboot (via telnet) nightly (no scheduled reboot in the UI, no SSH - this is a heavily stripped down BusyBox) because I have some WiFi security cameras attached to this and wanted more reliability that I was getting. It either completely dies where you can't bring up the admin UI, or devices will no longer connect to it (or both) when it fails. I guess you get what you pay for. Unlike my more expensive Asus, you can't monitor the system at all so I have no idea if I am pushing it hard or not, although I expect that there are no more than 7-8 devices attached to it at the worst case and none of them pushing significant data. 3Works well, be sure to update the firmware. I had trouble at first with this crashing a lot and needing to be configured over and over again. However once I updated the firmware to the latest it has been running fine (go to the ASUS website to get the firmware upgrade). Remember for it to work well as an extender, the SSID and security model, not to mention the channel, needs to be the same as your main router. That way it will just seem to you like there's only one network and your devices will pick up the strongest signal. Note that the automatic configuration that the manual describes does NOT do this, so you're better off IMHO configuring it yourself if you can. However, I do have different SSIDs for the 2.5 and 5 GHz bands so I can segregate devices by which band they use. I bought it to present a strong signal to my WebOS TV, which can be a bit flakey about connection stability, so I've put it right next to the TV. Since then, no disconnects. It runs quite warm, which bothered me at first. After several weeks now, it doesn't seem to matter. The night-light is a nice feature. 4
